Chapter 5: The Voice I Didn’t Remember
The recording played again.
Only three seconds.
Only one sentence.
But it was enough to make the entire room look at me like I was a stranger.
“Claire can never find out what happened…”
My own voice.
My own words.
My own fear.
Except I didn’t remember saying them.
I stared at the phone sitting on the table between us.
The old cracked screen reflected the chandelier above, making the recording feel even more unreal.
Someone in the crowd whispered my name.
Someone else said, “Daniel?””
But I couldn’t answer.
Because my mind was somewhere else.
Seven years ago.
A night I thought I remembered.
A night I had spent years replaying.
The night Claire disappeared.
But now there was a missing piece.
A piece that had been hidden from me.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me carefully.
Not with triumph.
Not with satisfaction.
With fear.
“Play it again,” I said.
My voice sounded empty.
Vanessa hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Play it.””
She pressed the screen.
The recording started.
Static.
A few seconds of silence.
Then my voice.
“Claire can never find out what happened…”
A pause.
Then another voice.
A man’s voice.
Robert’s.
“You understand what this means, Daniel.””
My blood went cold.
I turned toward Robert.
He looked away.
The guests started murmuring.
I stepped closer to him.
“You were there?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“You were there that night?””
His silence was enough.
I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself.
Seven years of memories crashed together.
The hospital.
The police questions.
The empty house.
The phone calls.
The search.
All of it.
And somehow Robert had been standing beside me.
Knowing something.
Hiding something.
“Daniel,” Claire whispered.
I looked at her.
The pain in her eyes was worse than anger.
She wasn’t accusing me.
She was afraid.
“Did you know?”” I asked.
She shook her head slowly.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
Like she had been waiting seven years to say it.
“I never heard that conversation.””
I looked back at the phone.
“But it’s my voice.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I wanted to.
God, I wanted to.
But how could I?
How could I trust my own memories when my own voice was telling me I was part of the secret?
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Robert finally spoke.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
I looked at him.
“You should have done that seven years ago.””
His face tightened.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised me.
He took a breath.
“The night Claire disappeared, she found the documents.””
Claire nodded.
“The financial records.””
Robert continued.
“She discovered Vanessa wasn’t just involved in the company fraud.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
“Then what was she involved in?””
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
And that pause told me everything.
“She was connected to the person who caused your father’s accident.””
The room went silent.
My chest tightened.
“My father’s accident?””
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at Robert.
“No, my father died from a heart attack.””
Robert’s expression broke.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You were the one who told me that.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He looked ashamed.
“Because your father wanted me to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“By lying to me?””
“By keeping you alive.””
The words hit differently.
The room became colder.
“What does that mean?””
Robert looked toward the windows.
Toward the dark night outside.
“Your father knew someone wanted him gone.””
My stomach twisted.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I tried.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She stopped me.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Robert turned toward her.
“It is.””
The two stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood something.
This wasn’t a simple betrayal.
This was a war that had been happening around me.
I was just the last person to find out.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me.””
She didn’t move.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me the truth.””
Her eyes filled.
“I met your father before I met you.””
“I know.””
“He knew about my family.””
I frowned.
“Your family?””
Vanessa looked down.
“My father worked for your father.””
Robert interrupted.
“He was the accountant who helped steal millions.””
The guests gasped.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Robert didn’t stop.
“Your father found out.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“So you came into my life because of my father?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“No, Daniel.””
She stepped closer.
“I came into your life because I loved you.””
I almost believed her.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything.
A part of me still searched for the woman I thought I knew.
“But you lied.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The admission was quiet.
“I did.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved to Lily.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Fix it?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I didn’t plan for things to go this far.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“You locked me away.””
“I panicked.””
“You stole years from my daughter.””
“I know.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
And for a second, I saw something I didn’t expect.
Regret.
Real regret.
But regret doesn’t erase damage.
I looked at Lily.
She was standing between us.
Small.
Confused.
Heartbroken.
I knelt beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She looked at me.
“Daddy…”
Her voice cracked.
“Did you know Mommy was there?””
The question destroyed me.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I swear.””
She studied my face.
Children have a way of seeing through adults.
Finally, she nodded.
But she didn’t smile.
Because she was too old to believe everything was suddenly okay.
I stood up.
“Play the rest.””
Everyone looked at me.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“There’s more?””
I looked at her.
“You said it was proof.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Then play it.””
Her hand trembled as she touched the phone.
The recording continued.
Static.
Then Robert’s voice.
“You need to understand, Daniel. If Claire exposes the documents, everything collapses.””
My voice answered.
“What am I supposed to do?””
My heart stopped.
Because I sounded scared.
Not guilty.
Scared.
Robert continued.
“You need to make her disappear.””
The room erupted.
“No.””
Claire whispered.
I looked at Robert.
“What did you tell me?””
Robert’s face was pale.
“Keep listening.””
The recording continued.
My voice.
“What if she doesn’t?””
A pause.
Then Robert.
“She won’t have a choice.””
I felt sick.
Because those words sounded like something terrible had happened.
But then…
Another sound appeared.
A door opening.
A woman crying.
Claire’s voice.
The real Claire.
Seven years younger.
“What are you two talking about?””
Everyone froze.
The recording captured the moment.
The moment Claire discovered the truth.
My breathing stopped.
Then my own voice shouted:
“Claire, wait!””
A crash.
A scream.
Then silence.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at me.
Her face was full of tears.
“You knew.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
“You were there.””
“I don’t remember.””
She stared at me.
And that hurt more than anger.
Because she believed I was lying.
Robert stepped forward.
“Daniel, you were drugged.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He nodded.
“Your father’s enemies knew you were the only person who could expose them. They needed you confused.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She whispered:
“Daniel…”
But I didn’t hear her.
Because my entire world had changed again.
I thought Vanessa was the villain.
I thought Robert was the betrayer.
I thought Claire was the victim.
But now there was another question.
One that terrified me.
If someone had manipulated my memory…
If someone had made me forget…
Then who had been controlling my life all these years?
A sound suddenly came from the ballroom entrance.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
One of the guests reached into his pocket.
But the phone wasn’t his.
It was mine.
The device I had left on the table.
The screen lit up.
Unknown caller.
I stared at it.
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily whispered:
“Daddy…”
I looked at the phone.
A message appeared before the call ended.
One sentence.
One name.
And my blood turned cold.
