Chapter 8: The Video That Changed My Memory
I stared at the phone.
The screen glowed in my hand.
One video.
One warning.
One moment that everyone in the room seemed terrified to see.
*You want to know what Daniel did that night? Watch.*
My thumb hovered over the play button.
Nobody spoke.
Not the guests.
Not Robert.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Victor.
For the first time since he entered the ballroom, Victor looked uncertain.
And that scared me.
Because a man who had spent years controlling everyone around him shouldn’t fear a video.
Unless the video could hurt him too.
I looked at Claire.
She was crying silently.
“Tell me what you saw.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
“I saw you standing in that room.””
My chest tightened.
“What room?””
“The office.””
A memory flashed.
My father’s office.
The old wooden desk.
The smell of coffee.
My father’s voice.
But it disappeared before I could hold onto it.
Claire grabbed my hand.
“You were angry.””
I swallowed.
“Angry at you?””
She nodded slowly.
“For a few minutes, I thought you hated me.””
The words cut deeper than anything else.
“Why?””
She looked at the phone.
“Because someone wanted me to believe that.””
Victor watched us.
Almost patiently.
Like he had already won.
I pressed play.
The screen went black.
Then the video started.
The quality was poor.
Security footage.
No sound at first.
A room appeared.
My father’s office.
My heart stopped.
The camera angle showed the entire room.
And there I was.
Seven years younger.
Standing beside the desk.
My hands were shaking.
Claire entered the room.
The sight of us together nearly broke me.
Because I remembered how happy we were.
How normal we looked.
Before everything fell apart.
The video continued.
Claire walked toward me.
She was holding a folder.
The same folder from the hidden room.
She placed it on the desk.
Even without sound, I could read her expression.
Fear.
She was afraid.
Then I saw myself.
I looked different.
Not like a man planning something.
Like a man fighting something inside his own mind.
Claire touched my arm.
I stepped away.
My younger self said something.
No sound.
But Claire reacted.
She looked shocked.
Then hurt.
Then angry.
The video jumped.
Static.
A few seconds disappeared.
Then suddenly, Victor appeared.
The ballroom went silent.
Victor in the past.
Standing in my father’s office.
I turned toward him.
“You were there.””
Victor smiled.
“I never said I wasn’t.””
My fists tightened.
On the screen, Victor walked toward me.
Claire stepped between us.
She pointed at him.
She was clearly confronting him.
Then something happened.
Something I didn’t expect.
Vanessa appeared.
The real Vanessa.
Seven years younger.
Terrified.
She entered the room behind Victor.
My breathing stopped.
Because the video showed what she had never admitted.
She wasn’t leading.
She was being led.
Victor said something.
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
Then she shook her head.
She was refusing.
Even through the silent video, I could see it.
She was scared.
Claire looked at me.
“I didn’t know that part.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“I never saw Vanessa come into the room.””
The video continued.
Victor placed something on the desk.
A small bottle.
My blood ran cold.
I remembered.
Not the event.
The feeling.
A headache.
Dizziness.
Confusion.
My younger self grabbed the desk.
Claire rushed toward me.
Victor moved behind her.
Then the video froze.
A notification appeared.
*Video corrupted.*
The screen went black.
Everyone stared.
“That’s it?”” I whispered.
Victor smiled.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“You sent me a corrupted video?””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I sent you enough.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You wanted me to think I did something.””
Victor tilted his head.
“But you did.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
He pointed toward the phone.
“You saw yourself.””
“I saw myself being poisoned.””
Victor laughed.
“Did you?””
My stomach turned.
“What are you saying?””
He looked at Robert.
Then Vanessa.
Then Claire.
“The video doesn’t show what happened after.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Because you deleted the rest.””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Daniel deleted it.””
Everyone froze.
My mind went blank.
“No.””
Victor walked closer.
“You were terrified of what you had done.””
“I didn’t.””
“You begged Robert to erase the evidence.””
Robert closed his eyes.
The reaction was immediate.
I turned toward him.
“Robert?””
He looked broken.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
He took a breath.
“You weren’t yourself.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“You were convinced you hurt Claire.””
My chest tightened.
“Did I?””
Robert looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“No.””
The word came quickly.
“No, Daniel.””
I almost collapsed from relief.
But then he continued.
“But you believed you did.””
I looked down.
My memories were fighting each other.
The truth.
The lies.
The pieces.
Everything.
Then Lily spoke.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
She was standing beside Claire.
“Are you bad?””
The question shattered me.
I walked toward her.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
I knelt down.
“But I know one thing.””
I held her hands.
“I would never hurt your mother.””
Lily looked at Claire.
Then at me.
After a long moment, she nodded.
And that tiny movement gave me the strength to keep going.
I stood.
I faced Victor.
“You wanted me confused.””
He smiled.
“Yes.””
“You wanted me to hate Claire.””
“Yes.””
“You wanted Vanessa close to me.””
His smile faded slightly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The room waited.
Victor finally answered.
“Because you had something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The final piece of evidence.””
I looked at him.
“My father’s evidence?””
Victor nodded.
“Your father hid it somewhere only you could find.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know anything.””
“You do.””
“No.””
Victor stepped closer.
“You forgot.””
My heart raced.
A memory surfaced.
A childhood memory.
My father sitting beside me.
A small wooden box.
His hand on my shoulder.
A sentence.
Never trust a locked door, Daniel. The truth is always somewhere inside.
I stumbled backward.
Claire caught me.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“My father…”
The memory grew clearer.
“He left me something.””
Robert’s eyes widened.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“A key.””
The room went silent.
A key.
The old brass key.
The one Lily found.
Everyone looked toward the oak door.
The hidden room.
My father had created a trail.
A trail that started seven years ago.
And ended tonight.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“There’s one thing you don’t know.””
I turned.
She was staring at Victor.
Her fear was gone.
Replaced by anger.
“You weren’t supposed to come here.””
Victor looked at her.
“You’re still protecting him?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I’m protecting Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
Including me.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I made mistakes.””
She looked at Claire.
“Terrible ones.””
Then she looked at Lily.
“But Victor was always the person behind everything.””
Victor’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked angry.
“You should be careful.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“I spent seven years being afraid of you.””
She wiped her tears.
“I’m done.””
Victor took a step forward.
But before he could speak, the ballroom doors opened.
Two police officers walked inside.
Everyone turned.
I looked at Robert.
“Did you call them?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then one officer walked toward me.
“Mr. Daniel Carter?””
“Yes?””
The officer looked serious.
“We need you to come with us.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
He held up a file.
“We received evidence connected to the disappearance of Claire Carter.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“No.””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry.””
He opened the file.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Standing outside the hidden room.
Seven years ago.
Holding the same brass key.
And underneath it was a handwritten note.
My handwriting.
Three words.
*I did this.*
I stared at the paper.
And for the first time that night…
May you like
I wondered if the person I was fighting to prove innocent…
Was myself.
