Chapter 6: The Message From the Dead

Nobody touched the phone.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Not Robert.

Not even Vanessa.

It sat on the table beneath the golden ballroom lights, glowing with a message that should not have existed.

*I know what really happened to Claire. — Your father*

My father.

A man who had been buried for seven years.

A man whose grave I had visited more times than I could count.

A man whose voice I could still hear when I walked through the old house he built for our family.

But this wasn’t a memory.

This was a message.

A living message.

My hands felt numb.

“Daniel,” Robert whispered.

I looked at him.

For the first time that night, Robert looked afraid of something other than being exposed.

He looked afraid because he knew this changed everything.

“How?”” I asked.

My voice was barely audible.

“How is my father texting me?””

Nobody answered.

Vanessa slowly stepped toward the table.

“No.””

Just one word.

But her reaction made everyone turn toward her.

I stared at her.

“You know something.””

She stopped.

“I don’t.””

“You said that seven years ago too.””

Her face tightened.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps telling me to listen. Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

I looked around the room.

“But nobody tells me the truth.””

The guests remained silent.

The engagement party had become something else entirely.

No longer a celebration.

A courtroom.

And everyone here was a witness.

Claire moved beside Lily.

Her eyes never left me.

“Open it.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The message.””

Her voice was calm.

“If it’s fake, we’ll know.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Daniel, wait.””

I turned.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because if someone sent that, they want a reaction.””

I laughed quietly.

“Robert, someone already trapped my wife for seven years.””

I pointed at the phone.

“Someone already destroyed my family.””

I picked it up.

“If there’s even a chance my father left something behind…”

My voice broke.

“I need to know.””

I unlocked the phone.

The message had one attachment.

A video.

Created seven years ago.

My fingers hovered over it.

Claire saw it.

Her breathing changed.

“What is it?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Then I pressed play.

The screen showed darkness.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a light flickered on.

And there he was.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting behind his old office desk.

The same desk I grew up seeing him work behind.

My knees almost gave out.

“Daniel.””

His voice.

It was really his voice.

Lily gasped.

“Grandpa?””

I looked at my daughter.

She had only seen him in pictures.

But somehow, she knew.

Children always know when something matters.

My father looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, if you’re watching this, then something happened.””

He paused.

His expression was serious.

“Something I hoped would never happen.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something. The people around you are not all who they appear to be.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

Then Robert.

Then Claire.

My father continued.

“I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people.””

He leaned closer to the camera.

“But the biggest mistake I made was believing money was the only thing they wanted.””

The video glitched.

Then his voice became quieter.

“Your wife found the truth before I could explain it to her.””

Claire covered her mouth.

My father continued.

“She found the records. She found the evidence.””

A pause.

“She also found out that Vanessa was not acting alone.””

Everyone went still.

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

Not because she was accused.

Because she knew what came next.

My father looked away from the camera.

Like he was choosing his words carefully.

“Daniel, if Claire is alive, you need to believe her.””

My heart broke.

Seven years.

He had known.

He had known Claire wasn’t gone.

Then why?

Why did nobody tell me?

My father’s voice became heavier.

“She never abandoned you.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Tears fell silently down her face.

Lily held onto her.

The video continued.

“The night Claire disappeared, I was too late.””

A pause.

“I found out Vanessa planned to use my company’s secrets against me.””

My body went cold.

“But she wasn’t the one who made the final decision.””

The room held its breath.

My father looked directly at the camera.

“The person who ordered Claire’s disappearance was someone closer than you think.””

The screen suddenly distorted.

Static covered his face.

Then one final sentence came through.

“Daniel, do not trust the person who tells you they saved you.””

The video ended.

The ballroom remained silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He knew.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She stared at the blank screen.

“He knew everything.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

“He knew.””

She laughed softly.

Not happily.

Almost like she had reached the end of something.

“I spent seven years thinking I had escaped.””

I stepped toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t hide Claire because I wanted to.””

Claire stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was forced.””

The room erupted.

Everyone spoke at once.

But I only heard Claire.

“Who forced you?””

Vanessa looked toward Robert.

And Robert immediately looked away.

That was enough.

My stomach sank.

“No.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Daniel…”

“You.””

The word came out slowly.

“You forced her?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Don’t pretend anymore.””

She looked at him.

“You threatened my family.””

Robert’s face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“You told me if I didn’t follow your instructions, my father would go to prison.””

The guests gasped.

I looked at Robert.

“What?””

He said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“You told me you had proof against him.””

Claire looked confused.

“But why would Robert care about Claire disappearing?””

Robert’s silence answered.

Then he finally spoke.

“Because Claire found something.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Robert looked at me.

“The real reason your father died.””

The room became quiet again.

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“My father’s accident…”

Robert nodded.

“Wasn’t an accident.””

Lily grabbed my hand.

I looked at Robert.

“Who did it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who killed my father?””

Robert looked toward the door.

And suddenly I realized something.

He wasn’t looking away because he was afraid.

He was looking because someone else was there.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the ballroom entrance.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Like he belonged there.

Like he had been watching the entire time.

Robert’s face went white.

“No.””

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from tonight.

From my childhood.

From my father’s old business meetings.

From the memories I thought meant nothing.

The stranger walked closer.

And Robert whispered the name nobody wanted to hear.

“Victor.””

The man smiled.

“Looks like the family reunion started without me.””

Claire stepped backward.

Lily moved closer to me.

Vanessa looked terrified.

And I finally understood.

The engagement party was never about my marriage.

It was a trap.

And every person in that room had been invited because they were connected to the truth.

Victor stopped in front of me.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel, your father didn’t die because someone wanted his money.””

He looked at Claire.

“He died because he discovered what your wife was about to discover.””

A pause.

“He discovered who was really controlling Vanessa.””

Victor smiled.

“And that person…”

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“…was you.””
