Chapter 11: The Key Inside the Heart
I removed the necklace slowly.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Jonathan.
The entire room watched as I held the tiny heart pendant in my palm.
For years, I thought it was just jewelry.
A reminder.
A symbol.
Something David gave me because he loved me.
Now I wondered if it had always been something else.
“Open it,” David whispered.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I hoped you would never have to.””
That answer broke something inside me.
“You put a key inside my necklace?””
“I put a backup plan inside your necklace.””
I stared at him.
“Without telling me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Still saying that?””
He looked away.
Because he knew.
He knew those words weren’t enough anymore.
I pressed my thumb against the small metal heart.
A hidden latch clicked.
The pendant opened.
Inside was a tiny silver key.
Jonathan immediately stepped forward.
Mr. Collins moved between us.
“Don’t.””
Jonathan stopped.
“You have no idea what that key opens.””
David looked at him.
“You’re right.””
He walked closer.
“But I do.””
I looked at the key.
“What does it open?””
David glanced toward the basement.
“The last place Marcus hid his evidence.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“You mean there’s another room?””
David nodded.
“In this house?””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
The walls suddenly felt different.
Like my home had been a maze all along.
“How long have you known?””
David’s expression broke.
“Since before we bought the house.””
I stepped back.
“Before we bought it?””
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
“You knew this house had secrets?””
“I knew Marcus had hidden something here.””
“And you brought me here?””
“I thought I could keep you away from it.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””
David looked down.
“I know.””
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Another noise.
A door closing.
Jonathan smiled.
“You’re running out of time.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Maya.
“Ask your sister.””
My eyes moved to her.
Maya looked terrified.
“What?””
Jonathan smiled.
“She knows where the first key came from.””
Maya’s face went pale.
David turned.
“Maya?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t want this.””
“What didn’t you want?””
She wiped her tears.
“To choose between telling Lena the truth and keeping David’s promise.””
My voice softened.
“Maya…”
She looked at me.
“David didn’t ask me to hide everything.””
“Then what?””
“He asked me to watch.””
My brow furrowed.
“Watch what?””
“You.””
The answer hurt.
“You were watching me?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“Not like that.””
“Then explain.””
Maya looked at David.
“He believed someone close to you was feeding information.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
“To who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the basement light flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And shut off.
Darkness covered us.
A moment later, a sound came from behind the wall.
A knock.
Three times.
Everyone froze.
David whispered:
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
His face had gone white.
“That’s impossible.””
The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
From inside the hidden wall.
David stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
Nobody moved.
“Marcus is dead,” Mr. Collins whispered.
David stared at the wall.
“I know.””
Another knock.
Then a voice.
Muffled.
Weak.
But clear enough.
“David…”
My blood froze.
The voice sounded like a man trapped somewhere.
David moved toward the wall.
“Who is that?””
No one answered.
Then the voice spoke again.
“David…”
A pause.
“Don’t trust her.””
Everyone looked at Maya.
Her face collapsed.
“What?””
The voice continued.
“She helped them.””
Maya stepped back.
“No.””
David looked between us.
Confusion.
Pain.
Fear.
May you like
Because suddenly the person inside the wall had changed everything.
And then the hidden door began to open.
