Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Wall
The hidden door opened slowly.
Not dramatically.
Not with force.
Just a quiet movement of old wood sliding against old wood.
And somehow that was worse.
Because it meant someone had opened it before.
Someone had been inside.
Waiting.
David stood in front of me and Sophie.
Maya stepped backward.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I didn’t do this.””
Nobody accused her.
Nobody had to.
The fear on her face said enough.
The wall opened completely.
Behind it was a narrow room.
No windows.
No furniture.
Only a chair.
And someone sitting in it.
My breath caught.
The man looked weak.
Older than the photograph.
His hair was gray.
His face was covered with bruises.
But his eyes…
Those eyes were familiar.
David stared.
Impossible.
The man looked up.
“David.””
David couldn’t move.
I watched my husband’s entire body change.
Like he had become someone else.
Someone younger.
Someone remembering a pain he buried years ago.
“Marcus?””
The man smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
Sophie whispered:
“Daddy’s brother?””
I looked at David.
He nodded slowly.
But he looked broken.
“How?””
Marcus coughed.
“Not dead.””
David stepped closer.
“I saw the accident.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You saw what they wanted you to see.””
Jonathan suddenly moved.
Everyone turned.
He wasn’t afraid anymore.
He was angry.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Marcus looked at him.
“And you should have finished the job.””
The words made the room explode with tension.
David turned toward Jonathan.
“You knew.””
Jonathan said nothing.
“You knew Marcus was alive.””
“Yes.””
David’s face changed.
“You kept him here.””
Jonathan smiled.
“Everyone has something they want to protect.””
My stomach turned.
“You locked a man inside a wall?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I understand enough.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Lena.””
I froze.
He knew my name.
“How do you know me?””
He looked at David.
“Because he talked about you every day.””
David looked away.
Marcus smiled sadly.
“He loved you.””
The words hurt.
Because I wanted to believe them.
I needed to.
But love didn’t erase secrets.
Love didn’t erase lies.
I looked at David.
“Why didn’t you tell me he was alive?””
David’s face broke.
“Because I didn’t know.””
Marcus nodded.
“That’s the truth.””
Everyone looked at him.
“David thought I was dead.””
Jonathan laughed.
“Until he found out.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You ruined everything.””
Jonathan stepped closer.
“You should be grateful.””
“For what?””
“For still breathing.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at David.
“Your wife needs to know the rest.””
David swallowed.
“What rest?””
Marcus looked toward Maya.
Maya started crying.
“No.””
Marcus continued.
“She wasn’t the one who betrayed you.””
My eyes moved to Maya.
A wave of confusion.
“Then why did you say she helped them?””
Marcus looked at the hidden wall.
“Because she did.””
Maya closed her eyes.
“I was forced.””
David stared.
“By who?””
Marcus looked directly at Jonathan.
Then said:
“Not him.””
Everyone froze.
Jonathan’s expression changed.
For the first time all night…
He looked afraid.
Marcus continued:
“Jonathan was only following orders.””
My heart stopped.
“Whose orders?””
Marcus looked at me.
Not David.
Not Mr. Collins.
Me.
“Lena…”
My body went cold.
“Why are you looking at me?””
Marcus whispered:
“Because the person behind all of this has been in your family for years.””
Nobody spoke.
Then he said the sentence that shattered everything.
“The person who planned David’s death…”
May you like
A pause.
“…is your mother.””
