Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Die
The lights came back three seconds later.
Three seconds.
That was all.
But in those three seconds, everything changed.
Because when the room became visible again, David was no longer standing where he had been.
He had moved.
He was standing between me and the basement stairs.
Protecting us.
The same way he always did.
Except now I didn’t know whether to run toward him or away.
My mind was trapped between two impossible truths.
My husband was alive.
And someone wanted him dead.
“Lena,” David said quietly.
I stared at him.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“Don’t say my name like nothing happened.””
His face fell.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t know what it felt like.””
Sophie was crying behind me.
“You don’t know what it was like telling our daughter that her daddy wasn’t coming home.””
David closed his eyes.
Every word hurt him.
Good.
A part of me wanted him to hurt.
Because I had hurt alone.
For two weeks.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
He looked at Mr. Collins.
At Maya.
Then back at me.
“Because the person who tried to kill me was someone we trusted.””
My chest tightened.
“You keep saying that.””
I pointed toward the basement.
“Everyone keeps saying someone betrayed us.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
David looked toward the basement.
Then whispered:
“Your lawyer.””
I froze.
“My lawyer?””
He nodded.
“The person who handled our estate. The person who helped manage our accounts after my company expanded.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you know what he was hiding.””
Mr. Collins spoke.
“David found evidence that money was being transferred through fake accounts.””
David nodded.
“And those accounts were connected to people who had access to our private information.””
Maya looked down.
“I should have told her sooner.””
I turned.
“What else are you hiding?””
Maya opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
David answered.
“She found the first transfer.””
I stared.
“What transfer?””
Maya looked ashamed.
“Your name.””
The same words.
Again.
My identity.
My life.
My trust.
“What did they do with my name?””
David stepped closer.
“They created fake documents. They made it look like you approved transactions you never saw.””
I felt sick.
“And you knew?””
His silence answered.
“You knew.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“Everyone says that.””
David looked away.
“I know.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Sophie moved.
She walked slowly toward him.
“Daddy?””
David immediately dropped to his knees.
The strongest man I knew suddenly looked broken.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She touched his face.
“You’re real?””
David cried.
“Yes.””
She hugged him.
And watching them broke something inside me.
Because I was angry.
I was hurt.
I was furious.
But that was still my husband holding our daughter.
After a few seconds, I looked away.
Because I couldn’t let myself forget what he had done.
The basement door creaked.
Everyone turned.
A figure appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a gray suit.
My lawyer.
Jonathan Reed.
The person David had just named.
He smiled.
Not nervously.
Not apologetically.
Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
“Well,” Jonathan said.
“Looks like the family reunion is complete.””
David immediately moved in front of Sophie.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Jonathan laughed softly.
“Neither should you.””
My stomach dropped.
David stared at him.
“You tried to kill me.””
Jonathan tilted his head.
“No.””
He looked around the room.
“I tried to remove a problem.””
The words made Maya gasp.
“You were behind everything?””
Jonathan smiled.
“You all make the same mistake.””
“What mistake?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Believing David was the smartest person in the room.””
David’s jaw tightened.
Jonathan continued:
“He found pieces of the truth.””
He stepped forward.
“But he never found the whole thing.””
The basement became silent.
I looked at David.
“What does he mean?””
David didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
Because for the first time since he returned…
My husband looked afraid.
Jonathan reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
And placed it on the table.
A photograph of David.
Me.
Sophie.
And someone standing behind us.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
Someone David clearly did.
Because the moment he saw the picture…
His face turned completely white.
Jonathan smiled.
“You want the truth?””
He tapped the photograph.
“Then ask your husband who that person really is.””
David stared at the picture.
May you like
And whispered:
“Because that person was supposed to be dead.””
