Chapter 2: The Name From the Past
Nobody moved for several seconds.
It felt like the entire house had stopped breathing.
Vanessa stared at the phone in her hand.
My father stared at the message.
And I stood there wondering why my stepmother looked more afraid of my dead mother than she looked afraid of hurting me.
“Explain,” Dad said.
One word.
Quiet.
But I had never heard him sound like that before.
Vanessa looked around the room.
“Marcus, it’s not what you think.””
“That’s the sentence people say when it’s exactly what I think.””
Her lips parted.
No words came out.
I watched the woman who always seemed so confident suddenly look lost.
Dad reached for the phone.
“Who is Ethan?””
Vanessa pulled it back.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
The silence stretched.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, “He’s someone from before.””
“Before what?””
She looked at me.
And something inside me broke.
Because even then, she wasn’t looking at my father.
She was looking at me like I was the reason her secret was falling apart.
Dad noticed.
“Nia, go upstairs.””
I looked at him.
“Daddy—”
“Please.””
His voice softened.
“I need you to go upstairs.””
I wanted to obey.
I really did.
But I had spent years leaving rooms whenever Vanessa wanted me gone.
I had spent years shrinking myself.
So I stood there.
“I want to know too.””
My father looked surprised.
Maybe because he remembered the little girl who used to hide behind his leg.
Maybe because he realized she wasn’t that little girl anymore.
Vanessa sat down.
Slowly.
Like her legs could no longer hold her.
“I knew your mother.””
My heart stopped.
Dad’s face tightened.
“You knew Emily?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Vanessa looked down.
“We were friends.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
Everyone said my mother had died in a car accident before Vanessa ever entered our lives.
Everyone said there was nothing left to explain.
Nothing left to find.
But Vanessa knew something.
“You never told me,” Dad said.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Of Daniel.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to my father.
His entire body went still.
“Don’t say that name.””
“Marcus, you need to hear me.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Not after all these years.””
I looked between them.
“Who is Daniel?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Daniel was someone your mother was investigating.””
“Investigating?”” Dad repeated.
“She found out he was moving money through businesses. She found documents. Proof.””
My father stepped back.
“Emily told me she was worried about someone.””
“She didn’t tell you everything because she was trying to protect you.””
The room became colder.
I felt like I was standing inside someone else’s memory.
“My mother wasn’t just in an accident,” I whispered.
Vanessa looked at me.
And that look answered before her words did.
“No.””
My knees felt weak.
“But everyone said…”
“I know what everyone said.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“She wanted to expose Daniel. She knew he was dangerous.””
Dad’s voice was barely audible.
“Where were you that night?””
Vanessa started crying.
And that was the first time I saw her look like a person instead of the woman who controlled every corner of the house.
“I was there.””
My father stared at her.
“What?””
“I was there when Emily disappeared.””
I stopped breathing.
My mother.
The woman I had been told was gone.
Vanessa had been there.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“For years?””
She nodded.
“I saw what Daniel could do. I saw how easily he could destroy people. I thought if I stayed quiet, I could keep myself safe.””
Dad looked disgusted.
“And my daughter?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice shook.
“You let my daughter sit alone and believe she didn’t belong while you carried the truth about her mother?””
Vanessa started sobbing.
But I didn’t feel satisfied.
I thought I would.
For years, I imagined the day someone finally saw what she did.
I imagined feeling powerful.
Instead, I just felt tired.
Because the truth did not bring my mother back.
It did not erase all those nights I ate alone.
It did not remove the fear Vanessa planted inside me.
Then her phone buzzed again.
This time, Dad grabbed it.
The message was from Ethan.
There’s proof. Emily recorded everything. Daniel knows the files exist.
Dad looked up.
“What files?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The ones that could put Daniel away.””
My father turned toward me.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“Do you remember anything from that night?””
I shook my head.
“I was little.””
“No.””
Vanessa suddenly looked at me.
“You do.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You remember something. Emily told me you were the only one who saw.””
My chest tightened.
A memory flickered.
A dark road.
My mother’s voice.
Her hands pushing me toward trees.
Run, baby.
Don’t look back.
I grabbed the edge of the counter.
“She didn’t die there.””
Nobody spoke.
The words came from somewhere deep inside me.
Somewhere I had locked away.
“My mom…”
I swallowed.
“She told me to run.””
Dad covered his mouth.
“She was hurt,” I whispered.
Tears rolled down my face.
“But she was alive.””
The house fell silent again.
Except this time, the silence was different.
May you like
Because for the first time in years, hope entered the room.
And somewhere far away, hidden behind years of fear and lies, my mother was waiting for us to find her.
