Chapter 4: The Woman in the Video

I read my mother’s letter three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I couldn’t believe they were real.

The handwriting was messy in places.

Like she had written quickly.

Like she was scared someone would find her.

But every line felt like my mother was sitting beside me.

My sweet Nia,

If you are reading this, I need you to know that every day I was away from you was a day I fought to return.

I closed my eyes.

My mother remembered me.

Not the idea of me.

Me.

The little girl who hated vegetables.

The little girl who slept with a stuffed rabbit.

The little girl who asked too many questions.

My father read over my shoulder.

His face changed with every sentence.

Emily explained how she discovered Daniel had been using several companies to hide stolen money. She explained how she tried to gather enough evidence before going to the police because she believed someone inside the system was helping him.

Then came the part that changed everything.

Daniel knew.

He knew she was investigating.

The night of the accident wasn’t an accident.

My hands started shaking.

“He tried to kill her,” I whispered.

Ethan nodded.

“He wanted everyone to believe she was gone.””

Dad stood up.

“He took my wife.””

His voice was filled with a pain I had never heard before.

“No.””

Ethan looked at him.

“He took years from her. Years from all of you.””

The room went quiet.

Then Ethan pulled out a laptop.

“There’s one more thing.””

He opened a file.

A video appeared.

At first, it was just darkness.

Then a woman stepped into view.

My heart stopped.

Because even older.

Even tired.

Even changed by years I never got to share with her.

I knew her.

My mother.

Emily Bennett.

Alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, then Ethan found you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Dad grabbed my hand.

My mother smiled sadly.

“I wish I could explain everything. I wish I could have been there for birthdays. School plays. First days of middle school.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But Daniel kept finding me.””

Ethan lowered his head.

“He had people watching her.””

My mother continued.

“I tried to come back. More than once. Every time I got close, something happened.””

She looked down.

“I was afraid that if I returned too soon, I would lead him straight to my family.””

My father whispered:

“She protected us.””

I looked at the screen.

All those years.

I thought she forgot me.

She was protecting me.

The realization hurt in a way I couldn’t explain.

Because love could hurt too.

Especially when it came too late.

My mother took a breath.

“There is someone else who knows the truth.””

The video paused briefly.

Then continued.

“Vanessa.””

Dad looked away.

Ethan sighed.

“She was involved?””

“Not with Daniel,” he said.

“But she knew.””

My stomach turned.

The woman who made me feel like an outsider.

The woman who watched me suffer.

She knew my mother was alive.

The video continued.

“Vanessa was scared. She saw what Daniel could do. She chose silence.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“She chose herself.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

A few hours later, Vanessa called.

Dad put it on speaker.

Her voice sounded broken.

“I know you found the files.””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I want to explain.””

“You should have explained years ago.””

“I know.””

For the first time, she sounded small.

Not powerful.

Not in control.

Just scared.

“Marcus, I made mistakes.””

“You didn’t make mistakes. You made choices.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I was there when Emily escaped.””

I looked at my father.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“She wasn’t dead. I saw her. I helped her get away.””

My chest tightened.

“But then why didn’t you tell us?””

Her answer came softly.

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“And because?””

Another pause.

“Because I was jealous.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I saw how much Marcus loved Emily. I saw how much he loved you. And I thought if Emily disappeared, maybe I could finally have the life I wanted.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa cried.

“I was wrong.””

I stared at the phone.

I expected anger.

I expected satisfaction.

But all I felt was sadness.

Because Vanessa wasn’t just the person who hurt me.

She was also the person who could have stopped it.

“Where is my mother?”” Dad asked.

Vanessa answered quietly.

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“But Ethan does.””

Everyone looked at him.

Ethan’s face changed.

Like he had been hoping we would never ask that question.

“What aren’t you telling us?”” my father demanded.

Ethan slowly stood.

“There’s a reason Emily stayed hidden.””

He looked at the video.

Then at the box of evidence.

“Because Daniel isn’t the only person who knows about the files.””

A chill ran through me.

“Who else?””

Ethan looked toward the window.

“Someone inside your family’s circle.””

And suddenly finding my mother wasn’t the only mystery anymore.

May you like

We had to figure out who had been helping Daniel.

Before he found us first.
