Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside the Family
Richard Cole arrived at my father’s house the next morning.
That was the first thing that told me he was guilty.
Not because he came.
Because he came too quickly.
People who are innocent usually ask questions.
They want to understand.
Richard walked in like he already knew what we had found.
He was dressed perfectly.
Pressed shirt.
Expensive watch.
A smile that looked practiced.
The kind of smile adults used when they wanted children to believe everything was fine.
“Marcus,” he said.
My father didn’t move.
“Richard.””
They stared at each other.
Two men who had shared years of friendship standing in the same room where everything had fallen apart.
Richard looked at my mother.
For a second, his expression changed.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“Emily.””
My mother’s voice was cold.
“You knew.””
Richard looked away.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He sighed.
“I knew Daniel was dangerous.””
My father stepped forward.
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to handle it.””
My mother laughed bitterly.
“Handle it?””
Her voice shook.
“You helped him.””
Richard looked hurt.
“No.””
But nobody believed him.
Not anymore.
Ethan placed the documents on the table.
“We found the transfers.””
Richard looked at them.
Then at Marcus.
“You don’t understand.””
My father’s voice was quiet.
“Then explain.””
Richard sat down.
And for the first time, he looked old.
“I was in debt.””
Nobody spoke.
“Daniel offered me money.””
My father stared at him.
“You sold us?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“You gave him information.””
“I didn’t know he would hurt Emily.””
My mother stepped closer.
“You knew enough.””
Richard looked at her.
“I thought he would scare you.””
The room went silent.
Scare her.
As if fear was something small.
As if destroying a family was just a warning.
My father walked away.
“I trusted you.””
Richard looked down.
“I know.””
“No.””
My father turned around.
“You don’t.””
His voice broke.
“You were the man who sat beside me after my wife disappeared.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“You were the man who told me she was gone.””
Richard started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
But apologies were easy.
Especially after years of damage.
I watched him.
And I realized something.
Adults always talked about monsters like they looked scary.
Like they announced themselves.
But sometimes monsters looked like family friends.
Sometimes they brought food to your house.
Sometimes they hugged you.
Sometimes they knew your favorite dessert.
My mother reached into the folder.
“There’s still one question.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Why did you help Daniel cover everything?””
Richard swallowed.
“Because after Emily escaped, Daniel threatened me.””
My father shook his head.
“You’re still making yourself the victim.””
Richard looked at me.
And something in his face changed.
“I saw Nia that night.””
My body froze.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“She was standing near the road.””
My mother grabbed my hand.
“What did she see?””
Richard looked terrified.
“She saw Daniel.””
I swallowed.
“I remember.””
The room became quiet.
Richard continued.
“She saw him pushing the car.””
My father closed his eyes.
My mother covered her mouth.
The memory came rushing back.
Not everything.
Just pieces.
My mother screaming.
A man grabbing her arm.
The sound of metal.
And my mother’s voice.
Run, Nia.
Don’t let him see you.
I looked at my father.
“I knew.””
Nobody spoke.
“I knew someone hurt her.””
My voice shook.
“But I thought it was a dream.””
My mother pulled me close.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Richard looked at the evidence.
“Daniel will come after all of us.””
My father looked at him.
“No.””
He stood tall.
“He won’t.””
Richard frowned.
“Why?””
My father looked around the room.
At me.
At my mother.
At the family that had finally found its way back together.
“Because this time, he’s not facing one person.””
He picked up the folder.
“He’s facing everyone he tried to break.””
And for the first time, I believed him.
The truth had been hidden for years.
May you like
But secrets had one weakness.
Eventually, someone brave enough finds them.
