Chapter 11: My Mother’s Final Recording
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not even Vanessa.
The gym full of strangers became completely silent as my mother’s image filled the screen.
She looked younger than I remembered.
Not the memory I carried of a hospital room.
Not the faded pictures from my childhood.
This was Claire before everything fell apart.
She smiled gently at the camera.
And my heart shattered.
“Hello, Nia.””
I covered my mouth.
Hearing her voice was different from seeing her handwriting.
Her voice was alive.
Warm.
Real.
“I don’t know when you will watch this,” my mother continued.
“But if you are seeing this, it means you are old enough to know the truth.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Vanessa looked down.
My father couldn’t watch the screen.
He looked at the floor.
My mother continued.
“First, I need you to know something.””
She paused.
“You were never abandoned.””
The words hit me.
The exact words I needed.
The words I had spent years needing.
“I know there may be people who tell you I left. I know there may be people who tell you I chose something else over you.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“But my daughter, that was never true.””
My breathing shook.
Dr. Lewis quietly stepped back.
The room disappeared.
It was just me and her.
“I was trying to protect you.””
A tear fell.
“Not because you were weak.””
She smiled sadly.
“Because you were the strongest thing I had ever known.””
I closed my eyes.
My mother remembered me.
She knew me.
Even after all these years.
The video continued.
“There are things you deserve to know.””
The room changed.
Everyone became tense.
“People will tell you different versions of what happened. They will tell you why I made certain choices.””
She paused.
“Listen carefully, Nia.””
Her expression became serious.
“Love does not always look like staying.””
My heart tightened.
“Sometimes love looks like leaving before someone else forces you to.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was covered in tears.
My mother continued.
“I trusted people I shouldn’t have trusted.””
A silence filled the gym.
“And I didn’t realize the danger until it was already close.””
Marcus looked up.
Danger.
That word changed everything.
My mother wasn’t talking about a misunderstanding.
She was talking about something serious.
“I need you to find the folder I left behind.””
Daniel looked at Dr. Bennett.
A folder.
My mother had left more.
“The folder contains everything.””
The screen flickered slightly.
“Names. Dates. Proof.””
My heart pounded.
“Proof of what?””
The video continued.
But then my mother looked away from the camera.
Like she heard something.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Nia, if you are watching this and Vanessa is there…”
Everyone froze.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
My mother looked back.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I stared at Vanessa.
The room became unbearable.
“Vanessa was not the person I was afraid of.””
The reaction was immediate.
My father looked shocked.
Vanessa looked up.
Everyone expected her.
Everyone had blamed her.
But my mother’s next words changed everything.
“I was afraid Vanessa would become someone else’s weapon.””
Nobody moved.
“What?”” Vanessa whispered.
The video continued.
“Vanessa made mistakes. She hurt me. She hurt you.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“But she was not the person controlling everything.””
My heart raced.
Not Vanessa.
Then who?
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“There is someone you must be careful with.””
The screen glitched.
The audio cracked.
“Nia, trust only—”
The video cut.
The gym lights flickered.
Everyone gasped.
Dr. Bennett rushed toward the equipment.
“No.””
The screen went black.
“No, no, no.””
I stared.
“No.””
The message was incomplete.
My mother had been about to name someone.
Someone she feared.
Someone controlling everything.
And then the recording stopped.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
Quietly.
“She knew.””
I turned.
“Knew what?””
Vanessa looked at the blank screen.
“She knew the truth would come out.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not fully.
But before anyone could question her, my phone vibrated.
Again.
Unknown number.
My heart dropped.
A new message.
*“She almost told you.””*
Then another.
*“But she never finished the sentence.””*
I looked up.
“How are they watching us?””
Daniel immediately looked around the gym.
“Everyone put your phones away.””
“What?””
“Now.””
People began looking at each other.
Confused.
Afraid.
I stared at the message.
The sender knew what happened seconds after it happened.
They weren’t just watching.
They were close.
Then a third message appeared.
May you like
One that made my blood turn cold.
*“Ask Marcus where he was the night Claire died.””*
