Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Protected
I stared at the message.
The gym disappeared again.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I finally understood.
Someone had spent years controlling information.
Giving pieces.
Taking pieces.
Keeping everyone divided.
And now they wanted me alone.
I looked up.
“No.””
Marcus immediately reacted.
“No what?””
I locked my phone.
“I’m not playing this game.””
Daniel nodded.
“Good.””
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“Whoever sent that wants control.””
Dr. Bennett looked worried.
“But they know things only a few people know.””
Angela looked around.
“Then they are here.””
The realization moved through the room.
Someone among us.
Someone close.
My eyes moved across every face.
Vanessa.
Marcus.
Dr. Bennett.
Daniel.
Angela.
Mrs. Parker.
Everyone had secrets.
But only one person had been watching every step.
My phone vibrated again.
A new message.
*“You still don’t know the biggest lie.””*
Then a photo appeared.
A photograph of my mother.
But not the one from before.
This one was recent.
Impossible.
My hands shook.
“She was alive.””
The words escaped me.
Everyone froze.
“What?”” Marcus whispered.
I showed them the screen.
The picture showed my mother standing outside a building.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably Claire.
Angela covered her mouth.
“No.””
Dr. Lewis stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel stared.
“That photo is fake.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Claire died twenty years ago.””
I looked back at the image.
My heart wanted to believe.
My mind refused.
Then Dr. Bennett noticed something.
“Wait.””
He pointed.
“The background.””
Everyone looked.
Behind my mother was a building.
A sign.
A date.
Dr. Bennett’s face changed.
“That photo was taken after her death.””
Silence.
My stomach dropped.
“So someone created this.””
“Yes.””
“To make me believe she was alive?””
Nobody answered.
Because the reason was obvious.
To make me chase something.
To make me lose control.
The same way they had controlled everyone else.
I looked at Vanessa.
She stepped forward.
“Nia.””
I expected another excuse.
Another secret.
Instead, she said:
“I know who sent it.””
Everyone turned.
My father stared.
“You do?””
Vanessa nodded.
Her face was pale.
“I think I do.””
“Who?””
She looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“The person who wanted Claire gone.””
The gym became silent.
“Who?””
Vanessa took a breath.
And finally said the name.
A name nobody expected.
“Your grandfather.””
My body froze.
“My grandfather?””
Marcus shook his head.
“My father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your father’s father.””
I stared.
“But he died.””
“Yes.””
“Before my mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Six months before Claire died.””
The confusion was overwhelming.
“Then how?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
“Because Claire discovered what happened before he died.””
Daniel suddenly looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because Claire made me promise.””
I almost laughed.
Another promise.
But this time, something was different.
Vanessa wasn’t hiding to protect herself.
She was hiding because she was terrified.
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather was involved with something dangerous.””
“What?””
“I don’t know everything.””
Nobody believed that.
But then she continued.
“Claire did.””
My mother.
Again.
Always one step ahead.
I opened the original letter.
Finally.
The first page.
My mother’s handwriting.
My tears fell before I even finished the first sentence.
*“My sweet Nia, if you are reading this, then the people I trusted failed to protect you.””*
I kept reading.
*“But I need you to know something. I never stopped fighting for you.””*
My hands shook.
The next line was underlined.
*“The truth about your father’s family is not a story of hate. It is a story of fear.””*
I looked up.
Everyone waited.
I continued.
*“There is one person who knows why I died.””*
My heartbeat stopped.
The next sentence was clear.
*“And that person is the one who has been protecting my secret all these years.””*
I looked around.
Who?
Who had been protecting it?
Then the final page slipped from the envelope.
A page I hadn’t noticed.
A page folded separately.
A name was written on it.
Not my grandfather.
Not Vanessa.
Not Marcus.
A living person.
Someone standing in the gym.
May you like
My fingers went cold.
Because the name belonged to the person nobody had suspected.
