Chapter 3: The Person Who Came Back

The entire gym seemed to stop breathing.

I looked toward the open doors.

The person standing there wasn’t familiar.

Not to me.

Not at first.

But Vanessa knew exactly who it was.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“Angela…”

The name escaped her mouth like a confession.

My father turned.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The woman slowly walked into the gym.

She was older, with silver strands mixed through her hair and a long coat over her shoulders. She carried herself calmly, but her eyes moved directly toward the envelope in my hand.

Not toward the stage.

Not toward the crowd.

The envelope.

Dr. Bennett stepped aside.

“I didn’t think you would come.””

The woman gave a small, sad smile.

“I almost didn’t.””

My father stared at her.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

Then at me.

“My name is Angela.””

She paused.

“And I knew your mother.””

My fingers went cold.

Everyone had secrets.

But this felt different.

This felt like a door opening into a room I was never supposed to enter.

I looked at Dr. Bennett.

“You called her?””

He nodded.

“After Vanessa tried to stop you from receiving the letter.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not what happened.””

Angela looked at her.

A quiet, disappointed look.

“You’re still doing it.””

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

The audience watched silently.

My father looked overwhelmed.

“Nia,” he said softly, “I’m sorry.””

I turned toward him.

For years, I waited for those words.

But hearing them now didn’t feel like victory.

It felt like proof that something had been wrong all along.

“Sorry for what?””

He looked down.

“I should have asked more questions.””

I swallowed.

“You were my father.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No,” I whispered.

“I don’t think you do.””

The microphone picked up my voice, making it echo through the gym.

“I spent years thinking my mother left me with no answers.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“But maybe the answers were taken from me.””

Nobody spoke.

Angela walked closer.

“Your mother loved you more than anything.””

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Hearing someone say that still hurt.

Because I wanted to believe it.

I needed to.

“Then why did she leave a letter?””

Angela looked at the envelope.

“Because she knew there would come a day when you needed the truth.””

Vanessa laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Truth?””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“You want to talk about truth?””

Her voice trembled.

“Fine.””

My father looked worried.

“Vanessa…”

“No, Marcus.””

She stared at me.

“You want answers? You’re going to get them.””

I held my breath.

For the first time, she wasn’t trying to stop me.

She was challenging me.

“You think your mother was the only person who suffered?””

Angela’s expression hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“She left things behind. Things she never explained.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What things?””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Then she stopped.

Whatever she wanted to say, she couldn’t.

Dr. Bennett stepped in.

“Enough.””

His voice returned to the calm authority I remembered.

“This is not about controlling the story anymore.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You think you know everything?””

“No,” he said.

“I know what your friend wrote down twenty years ago.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“My friend?””

Angela looked at me.

“She was my best friend.””

The words hit me.

Another person who loved my mother.

Another person who knew a version of her I never got to meet.

I looked down at the envelope again.

The seal was already broken.

The letter was waiting.

But suddenly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read it.

Because if everyone was this afraid…

What if the truth hurt more than the mystery?

Angela noticed my hesitation.

She stepped closer.

“Nia.””

I looked up.

“Your mother didn’t write that letter to destroy anyone.””

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“She wrote it because she knew someone might try to hide what happened.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Again.

My father noticed too.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

The silence became unbearable.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

She stared at me.

And for a second, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

Instead, she whispered:

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Protect me from what?””

Vanessa looked at the envelope.

Then at me.

And before she could answer, Angela spoke.

“From finding out who your mother really trusted.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Dr. Bennett.

I looked at my father.

Then I looked at the letter.

My mother’s final words.

The words everyone had spent twenty years trying to keep away from me.

I slowly pulled the paper farther out.

The gym went silent.

Vanessa took one step forward.

“Nia…”

I looked at her.

For once, I wasn’t afraid.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But before she could speak, my phone suddenly vibrated.

One new message.

From an unknown number.

I looked down.

May you like

And the first line on the screen made my blood run cold.

Because whoever sent it knew exactly what was inside my mother’s letter.
