Chapter 3: The Secret Everyone Protected
I couldn’t breathe.
Not because of the envelope.
Because of the date.
Eighteen years ago.
The year my entire life changed.
The year my mother disappeared from every photograph in our house.
The year my father stopped talking about the past.
The year Vanessa entered our lives.
I stared at the document on the table.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Marcus.
“Tell me.””
Marcus remained quiet.
Like he was choosing every word carefully.
“I think you deserve to hear the truth from the people who were there.””
My eyes moved toward my father.
“Dad?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I’m tired of everyone saying my name like that.””
“Like what?””
“Like I’m too young to know.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa walked toward the window.
She looked outside at the bright morning.
The same morning that was supposed to be perfect.
“You don’t know what you’re asking for,” she said.
I laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed my dress because you thought I didn’t deserve to graduate. You brought me to this point. Don’t pretend you’re protecting me.””
Her shoulders tightened.
“You think I wanted this?””
“I don’t know what you wanted.””
She turned around.
And for the first time, I saw something complicated in her expression.
Not just cruelty.
Something else.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“You have always believed everyone was against you.””
I shook my head.
“No. I believed my family loved me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
Because he knew.
He knew I was right.
I walked to the table.
The envelope was still sealed.
The document was still untouched.
Marcus stood beside me.
“Maya, before you read anything, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“People sometimes hide things because they think they are protecting someone.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And sometimes?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Vanessa did.
“Sometimes people hide things because they know the truth will destroy everything.””
My father looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
“No, Daniel.””
Her voice became colder.
“You can’t keep pretending anymore.””
I looked at my father.
“What does she mean?””
Daniel sat down slowly.
He looked older suddenly.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When I turned thirty?””
Silence.
“When I got married?””
Nothing.
“When you thought I could handle it?””
His eyes filled with sadness.
“I was afraid.””
I stared at him.
“My whole life, you were afraid?””
He looked down.
“I lost your mother.””
The words were quiet.
“But I couldn’t lose you too.””
I swallowed hard.
“Then why did you let her hurt me?””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
No answer.
That was the answer.
Marcus picked up the sealed envelope.
“Maya, this was delivered because today was the day chosen.””
“Chosen by who?””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“Someone who believed you were finally old enough.””
My hands went cold.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Vanessa suddenly moved.
“Enough.””
She grabbed the document from the table.
I reacted immediately.
“Give that back.””
She held it tightly.
“You don’t know what you’re opening.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why are you so scared?””
Her eyes met mine.
And for a second, the woman who always looked powerful looked trapped.
“I’m scared because you think the truth will make you happy.””
The words confused me.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the sealed envelope.
“The truth doesn’t always save people.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“You want someone to blame.””
“I want honesty.””
“You want a villain.””
I looked at her.
“Maybe because you keep acting like one.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
Then she placed the document back on the table.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like it was dangerous.
Marcus looked at me.
“Maya, there is one more thing you should know.””
“What?””
He glanced at Vanessa.
“Your stepmother knew I was coming today.””
My heart stopped.
I turned.
“What?””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
“You knew?””
She looked away.
My voice became smaller.
“You knew someone was bringing me this?””
“Yes.””
“And you still cut my dress?””
No answer.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
May you like
And said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because I knew once you received that envelope, you would never look at me the same way again.””
