Chapter 7: The Recording
The flash drive looked ordinary.
That almost made it worse.
Something so small had the power to destroy everything I knew.
Marcus connected it to his laptop.
Nobody sat down.
Nobody moved.
The screen remained black.
Waiting.
I stood there in my torn white dress, feeling like I was standing between two versions of my life.
The one I believed.
And the one I was about to discover.
Marcus looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The video opened.
For a second, there was only darkness.
Then a face appeared.
My mother.
Older than the pictures I remembered.
But unmistakably her.
My knees weakened.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
She looked into the camera.
And smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A tired one.
“Hello, Maya.””
I covered my mouth.
Hearing my name from her voice was something I had never imagined.
My mother continued.
“If you are watching this, then I’m sorry.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Not because she apologized.
Because she sounded alive.
Real.
Like she had only been gone for a moment.
“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””
She looked down briefly.
“But I was afraid.””
The video flickered.
My mother continued.
“Your father is a good man in many ways.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“But good people can still make terrible choices.””
The words hit him.
I watched his reaction.
He didn’t look angry.
He looked ashamed.
My mother looked back at the camera.
“Maya, there is something you need to know about the night I disappeared.””
Everyone became still.
The room felt smaller.
“I wasn’t running away from you.””
A tear fell down my cheek.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
My mother continued.
“I discovered that someone had been using my name.””
I frowned.
“Using your name?””
The words left my mouth before I realized I had spoken.
The video continued.
“I found documents. Financial records. Messages. Things that proved someone close to me had been lying.””
My father looked away.
Marcus watched him.
My mother said:
“I thought I knew who I could trust.””
A pause.
“I was wrong.””
The screen showed her taking a breath.
Then she said:
“The person who betrayed me was not the person everyone suspected.””
Everyone looked confused.
Even Vanessa.
I turned toward her.
She looked genuinely shocked.
My mother continued.
“That is why I hid this message.””
The video stopped for a second.
Then she said:
“Because if anything happened to me, people would immediately blame the wrong person.””
My heart pounded.
Wrong person.
All these years, I thought Vanessa was the villain.
But my mother’s words suggested something else.
Someone else.
The video continued.
“I need you to understand something about Vanessa.””
The room froze.
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
My mother’s voice filled the room.
“She made mistakes.””
Vanessa stared at the screen.
“But she was not the person who hurt me.””
I felt my entire body go cold.
Nobody moved.
My mother continued.
“Vanessa, if you are watching this, I hope you understand why I couldn’t tell you everything.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Tears appeared in her eyes.
I looked at her differently for the first time.
Not because I forgave her.
I didn’t.
But because I realized I had only ever known one side of her.
My mother continued.
“Maya, the hardest truth is this.””
She paused.
“The person you trust the most may be the person who needs to answer for the most.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I turned slowly.
Toward my father.
He looked like he already knew.
“Dad.””
He didn’t respond.
“Is she talking about you?””
His face broke.
“Maya…”
“Is she?””
Daniel sat down.
His silence was devastating.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“No, Daniel. Tell her.””
My father looked up.
“I made a mistake.””
My stomach tightened.
“What mistake?””
He rubbed his eyes.
“The documents your mother found…”
“Yes?””
“They weren’t about money.””
“Then what?””
He looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
“They were about you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Your birth records.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone buzzed again.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Maya, ask your father why your mother never told him the truth about who your biological father was.*
I dropped the phone.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered:
“Because he wasn’t ready to know.””
