Chapter 8: The Truth Behind My Name
The words stayed in the air.
Like smoke.
Like something poisonous.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you say?””
She looked terrified.
Not of me.
Of what came next.
My father stood up.
“Maya, don’t listen to her.””
My eyes moved toward him.
“Why?””
He froze.
“Why shouldn’t I?””
“Because you don’t understand.””
I laughed softly.
“I understand one thing.””
My voice shook.
“Everyone in this room knows something about me that I don’t.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Marcus closed the laptop.
“Maya, there are still things that need to be explained carefully.””
I turned toward him.
“Carefully?””
I pointed at the envelope.
“My entire life has been handled carefully.””
I looked at the torn dress.
“My mother disappeared carefully.””
I looked at my father.
“My childhood was shaped carefully.””
Then Vanessa.
“And now you all want to tell me the truth carefully?””
No one spoke.
I picked up the letter again.
My mother’s handwriting felt like the only honest thing left.
I read the final paragraph.
*Maya, your name is the one thing nobody can take from you. Remember that.*
I stared at the words.
Why would she write that?
Unless someone had tried.
Marcus noticed.
“There is another page.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He reached into his briefcase.
“I wasn’t sure when to give this to you.””
Another page.
Another secret.
I took it.
This handwriting wasn’t my mother’s.
It was official.
A document.
My eyes moved across the top.
And my heart stopped.
*Confidential Birth Verification Record*
I couldn’t move.
Daniel whispered:
“Maya…”
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
His silence answered.
“How long?””
He looked down.
“Since you were a baby.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew something about my identity for eighteen years?””
“I wanted to tell you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted to avoid telling me.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I loved you.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what makes it worse.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Maya.””
I turned.
“Why did you cut my dress?””
She stopped.
The question seemed to surprise her.
After everything.
After the secrets.
That was what I asked.
Her eyes filled.
“Because I knew this would happen.””
“What?””
“You would leave.””
I stared at her.
“You thought destroying my dress would keep me here?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought if today became a disaster, maybe we could delay this.””
“Delay the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Because once you knew, you would ask questions.””
I held up the document.
“I’m asking now.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“My sister.””
I froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Your biological father was my brother.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“My brother was the man your mother loved before Daniel.””
My mind struggled to process it.
“You’re saying…”
“Yes.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I wasn’t just your stepmother.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I was connected to you before Daniel ever met your mother.””
I looked at Marcus.
He nodded slowly.
“She was part of the reason your mother trusted her.””
I turned back to Vanessa.
“Then why did you treat me like I was nothing?””
Her face collapsed.
Because finally, after all these years, she looked ashamed.
“Because every time I looked at you…”
She stopped.
“Every time I saw your eyes, I saw my brother.””
I didn’t know what to say.
It wasn’t an excuse.
It didn’t erase anything.
But it was the first real answer she had ever given me.
My father sat down.
“I knew your biological father.””
I looked at him.
“And?””
He looked broken.
“And I chose to raise you anyway.””
I swallowed.
“Did Mom know?””
“Yes.””
“Did she love me?””
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“Maya.””
His voice broke.
“She loved you more than anything.””
The room became quiet.
For the first time all day, I believed something.
Not because they told me.
Because I felt it.
My mother’s letter.
Her recording.
Her words.
She had been fighting for me even when I thought she was gone.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Everyone noticed.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Marcus listened for a few seconds.
Then he looked at me.
“Maya.””
Something about his voice made my stomach drop.
“What?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“The person who sent those messages…”
He paused.
“They weren’t supposed to contact you yet.””
“Who are they?””
Marcus looked toward the front door.
May you like
And whispered:
“Someone who knows where your mother is.””
