Chapter 5: The Principal's Credentials

Principal Carter read the notification three times.

Then she locked the tablet.

“Ms. Brooks,” she said, her voice clipped, “I need you to contact the district records office and request an immediate security review.””

The counselor stood beside the door.

“Should I mention the credentials?””

“Tell them the record is disputed and that the access log must be preserved.””

Ms. Brooks nodded and left.

Maya remained seated, watching the principal.

“Did you file it?””

Principal Carter turned toward her.

“No.””

“You're the only person in this room whose credentials are on that request.””

“That doesn't mean I created it.””

“Then how did somebody use your account?””

“I don't know yet.””

Maya leaned forward.

“Did you log in at eight fourteen this morning?””

Principal Carter hesitated.

“I logged into the administrative system before the first bell.””

“What were you doing?””

“Reviewing attendance reports and disciplinary notices.””

“Did you see my name?””

“Not that I remember.””

Maya let out a frustrated breath.

“You keep telling me what you don't remember. Can we check?””

Principal Carter picked up the tablet again.

“The district is reviewing the audit trail. Until they complete that review, I won't speculate.””

“I'm not asking you to speculate. I'm asking you to look.””

The principal's face tightened.

For several seconds, Maya thought she would be ordered out of the office.

Instead, Carter pulled her chair closer to the desk.

“Fine. We'll review the records available to us.””

She reopened the administrative dashboard and selected the morning activity log.

A list of routine actions appeared: attendance corrections, schedule approvals, a maintenance request, and several student-services notifications.

The timestamps ran down the screen.

8:02 a.m.

8:07 a.m.

8:11 a.m.

Then 8:14 a.m.

Principal Carter tapped the entry.

The screen displayed a reference number and a description.

*DISCIPLINARY REQUEST CREATED.*

Maya leaned forward.

“Open it.””

Carter tapped again.

A permissions message appeared.

*FULL AUDIT DETAILS RESTRICTED TO DISTRICT SECURITY ADMINISTRATION.*

The principal sat back.

“I can't access the complete log from this dashboard.””

“Even though it's your account?””

“Even though it's my account.””

Maya stared at the screen.

“So somebody can use your credentials to create a document about me, but you can't see how it happened?””

“I can see the administrative summary. The district controls the underlying security records.””

“Then why does the school have a system that lets this happen?””

“That's a question I'm going to ask the district.””

Maya stood and began pacing the small office.

Her sneakers made soft squeaks against the floor.

She pictured Vanessa standing over Lena, smiling as the milk ran down the younger girl's face. She remembered the way Vanessa had glanced at the security camera, the confidence in her voice, the way she'd mouthed those three words as Maya left the cafeteria.

You should've stayed quiet.

Maya stopped pacing.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Go ahead.””

“Has Vanessa been involved in other incidents?””

Principal Carter folded her hands.

“I can't discuss another student's confidential disciplinary history.””

“I'm not asking for her file. I'm asking whether you've had complaints about bullying.””

The principal looked at her for a long moment.

“There have been complaints involving several students, including Vanessa. Every complaint must be evaluated on its own evidence.””

“Did anybody do anything about them?””

“Some were handled through counseling and parent meetings.””

“And today she poured milk on Lena's head in front of half the school.””

“I saw the incident report.””

“Not the report,” Maya said.

“The actual footage.””

Principal Carter nodded slowly.

“Yes. I saw the footage.””

“Then you saw who started it.””

“I did.””

“Will that matter?””

“It will.””

Maya searched the principal's face.

She wanted to believe the answer.

But belief was becoming difficult.

A knock interrupted them.

The security technician returned, carrying his laptop.

“Principal Carter, I have a preliminary update.””

Carter gestured for him to enter.

“Tell us.””

“The district has confirmed that the expulsion request was created under your administrative account. However, the system hasn't established that you personally initiated the action.””

Maya crossed her arms.

“Can they tell who did?””

“Not yet. The security team is checking the authentication logs.””

Principal Carter leaned forward.

“What about the submitted video?””

“The file was uploaded through a staff-authorized portal. Its upload timestamp is 12:51 p.m. The portal's access log is still being retrieved.””

“And the original request?””

“The request itself was created at 8:14 a.m.””

Maya stepped closer to the desk.

“Could somebody have written the request in the morning and added the video later?””

“Yes,” the technician replied.

“That's technically possible.””

“So whoever created it didn't need the video to decide I should be expelled.””

The technician looked uncomfortable.

“That's one possible interpretation of the sequence, but we shouldn't draw conclusions until the records are complete.””

Maya shook her head.

“Everyone keeps asking me not to draw conclusions while the system keeps drawing them about me.””

The technician lowered his eyes.

Principal Carter spoke firmly.

“Maya has a point. Please make sure the district reviews the sequence of events, not just the individual files.””

“I'll include that in the escalation.””

He turned to leave, but Maya stopped him.

“Can you tell whether the video was uploaded from a school computer?””

“I can't confirm that yet.””

“Can you tell whether it was uploaded from the cafeteria?””

“No. Not from the information available to me.””

Maya nodded.

“Thank you.””

The technician left.

Principal Carter sat quietly for a moment before speaking.

“You're handling this better than many adults would.””

Maya gave her a tired look.

“Does that go in my disciplinary record too?””

The principal winced.

“No. And I'm sorry.””

The apology caught Maya off guard.

Principal Carter continued.

“I should have reviewed the evidence before ordering you to my office. I was responding to the situation in front of me, but that doesn't excuse making you feel as though your side didn't matter.””

Maya looked down at her hands.

“Lena was crying, and Vanessa was standing there telling everybody I attacked her. I thought you'd see what happened.””

“I should have.””

The room grew quiet.

For the first time that afternoon, the principal wasn't hiding behind policy language.

She was admitting she had made a mistake.

Maya sat again.

“What happens now?””

“I'll ensure the cafeteria footage is preserved. I'll also request written confirmation that no final disciplinary decision will be made while the request's authenticity is under review.””

“And the expulsion request?””

“We'll investigate that too.””

Maya rubbed her forehead.

“Can I go back to class?””

Principal Carter checked the time.

“You can, but I would prefer that you speak with Ms. Brooks first. You've had a difficult afternoon.””

“I don't need counseling because somebody tried to frame me.””

“No,” Carter said gently.

“But you deserve support after what happened.””

Maya considered that.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.””

Principal Carter began typing a message to the district office.

Maya picked up her backpack from beside the chair.

As she reached the door, her phone vibrated.

A message from Lena appeared on the screen.

*LENA: Maya, I'm sorry. I should have told you sooner.*

Maya frowned and typed back.

*MAYA: Told me what?*

The typing indicator appeared almost immediately.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, another message arrived.

*LENA: Vanessa wasn't only trying to humiliate me today. She wanted something back.*

Maya's fingers tightened around her phone.

*MAYA: What thing?*

The answer came in a single sentence.

*LENA: The original recording. The one she told me to delete yesterday.*

Maya read it twice.

She turned toward Principal Carter, who was still typing at her desk.

“Principal Carter?””

The woman looked up.

“I need to talk to Lena again.””

“Is something wrong?””

May you like

Maya glanced at the message.

“I think today's fight started before this morning.””
