Chapter 6: What Lena Was Afraid to Say

Lena was waiting outside the school counseling room when Maya found her.

Her beige T-shirt had been replaced with a borrowed blue sweatshirt, and her glasses sat slightly crooked on her nose. A damp paper towel was crumpled in one hand.

When she saw Maya, she immediately stood.

“I'm sorry,” Lena said.

Maya stopped in front of her.

“For what?””

“For not telling you everything.””

Maya glanced down the corridor.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

Lena nodded.

They entered the counseling room, where sunlight fell across a round table and four upholstered chairs. The blinds were open. Through the glass panel in the door, the hallway remained visible.

Maya sat opposite Lena.

“Tell me what Vanessa wanted back.””

Lena rubbed her thumb against the edge of the paper towel.

“Yesterday, she asked me to delete a video from my phone.””

“What video?””

“I recorded something that happened in the cafeteria last week.””

Maya frowned.

“What happened?””

Lena took a breath.

“Vanessa was making fun of another girl. She took the girl's lunch tray and dumped it into the trash. Then she told everyone the girl had stolen money from her.””

“Did she?””

“No. I found out later that Vanessa had accused her because the girl wouldn't give her answers to a homework assignment.””

Maya stared at her.

“And you recorded it?””

“I was sitting at the next table. I started recording because Vanessa was getting aggressive, and I thought the girl might need proof.””

“Did you send it to anyone?””

“No.””

“Did Vanessa know you had it?””

Lena nodded.

“She saw my phone when I was putting it away. Yesterday, she cornered me near the library and demanded that I delete the recording.””

“What did you tell her?””

“That I didn't have it anymore.””

Maya leaned forward.

“But you did.””

“I still do.””

Lena reached into the front pocket of her backpack and removed her phone.

Her hands shook as she unlocked it.

“I was scared she'd take it from me. I moved the file into a private folder, but I never deleted it.””

Maya looked at the phone.

“Did you tell Principal Carter?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

Lena's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Vanessa told me she'd make sure nobody believed me. She said her parents knew people at the school, and if I tried to get her in trouble, she'd tell everyone I was the one who started everything.””

Maya felt anger rise, but she kept her voice gentle.

“Lena, you didn't deserve what happened today.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Lena looked at her.

“I know it wasn't right. But when she poured the milk on me, everybody laughed before they realized I was crying.””

Her voice broke.

“And I thought maybe she was right. Maybe nobody would care.””

Maya reached across the table and placed a hand beside Lena's phone.

“I care.””

Lena wiped her eyes.

“You stood up for me, and now somebody's trying to get you expelled.””

“That's not your fault.””

“But if I had told you about the video—”

“Then we might have known why she was targeting you. But the person who created that request is responsible for what they did. Not you.””

Lena looked down at the screen.

“There's something else.””

Maya waited.

“The recording I took last week might explain why Vanessa was so desperate to get rid of it.””

“What do you mean?””

Lena opened the video folder.

A thumbnail appeared showing a cafeteria table, a lunch tray, and the side of a girl's pink sweater.

She tapped it.

The video began.

Vanessa stood beside another student, a Black teenage girl with short twists and a yellow cardigan. The girl held a notebook against her chest.

“Give me the answers,” Vanessa demanded.

“I already told you I don't have them,” the girl replied.

Vanessa snatched the notebook from her hands.

“Then why were you copying everything in class?””

“Because I was taking notes!””

Vanessa flipped through the pages, then tossed the notebook onto the lunch table.

“You think you're better than everybody because you get good grades?””

“No. I just want you to leave me alone.””

Vanessa grabbed the girl's lunch tray and tipped it into the trash.

Food slid over the rim.

The girl stared at the mess.

“You're unbelievable.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Go tell someone. See what happens.””

The video ended.

Maya looked at Lena.

“Who was that girl?””

“Amari Johnson. She transferred to another school last Friday.””

“Did she report Vanessa?””

“I don't know. She stopped talking to people about it after the incident.””

Maya looked back at the phone.

The recording didn't show anything about the expulsion request. It didn't prove that Vanessa had filed anything against her.

But it did show a pattern.

Vanessa had humiliated students publicly, threatened them privately, and tried to make sure nobody had evidence.

“Can you send this to Principal Carter?”” Maya asked.

Lena hesitated.

“What if Vanessa finds out?””

“We can ask the principal to preserve it and handle it confidentially. You don't have to post it online or show it to other students.””

Lena swallowed.

“Will it help you?””

“It might help establish what happened last week. It won't automatically explain the request.””

Lena nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

She sent the file to Maya, who immediately brought it to Principal Carter's office.

The principal watched the recording with her hands folded on the desk.

When it ended, she looked at Lena.

“Did you record this yourself?””

“Yes.””

“Has anyone edited it?””

“No.””

“Have you shared it publicly?””

“No. I only kept it on my phone.””

Principal Carter nodded.

“Thank you for bringing this forward. We'll preserve the file and document how it was obtained. I won't treat the recording as proof of anything beyond what it actually shows.””

Lena glanced at Maya.

“Will Vanessa get in trouble?””

“Any allegation must be reviewed fairly,” the principal replied.

“I can't promise a particular outcome.””

Maya appreciated the careful answer, even if she wished the school would move faster.

Principal Carter requested a written statement from Lena, then asked whether she wanted a counselor present while she gave it.

Lena agreed.

Before leaving, she turned to Maya.

“I should have spoken up sooner.””

Maya shook her head.

“You spoke up now. That's what matters.””

Lena managed a small smile.

After she left with Ms. Brooks, Maya remained in the office.

Principal Carter opened a new case record and attached the video under a separate incident reference.

“This is important evidence of a previous incident,” she said.

“But we still need to establish who created your expulsion request.””

Maya nodded.

“Can we see whether Vanessa was in the cafeteria before the request appeared?””

“We can review the footage from the relevant times, subject to the school's procedures.””

“Then let's do that.””

Principal Carter contacted the security office.

While they waited, Maya sat beside the desk, scrolling through the messages Lena had sent her.

She stopped at one.

*LENA: Vanessa told me yesterday that if I didn't delete the recording, she'd make sure I regretted it before the week was over.*

Maya showed the message to the principal.

Carter read it carefully.

“Did Lena tell you when that conversation occurred?””

“Yesterday afternoon.””

“Has she included it in her written statement?””

“Not yet.””

“Then I'll ask her to document it in her own words.””

A few minutes later, the security technician called back.

Principal Carter put the call on speaker.

“We need footage covering the cafeteria before the first bell,” she said.

“Start with the tables near the center aisle.””

The technician confirmed the request.

Maya leaned toward the phone.

“Can you check whether Vanessa was there before eight fourteen?””

There was a pause.

“I can check the available camera feeds,” he replied.

“I'll need to review the relevant time range.””

Principal Carter gave him permission to proceed.

They waited.

The office clock ticked forward.

Then the technician spoke again.

“Principal Carter, I found something you should see.””

“What is it?””

“Vanessa appears on the cafeteria camera at 8:06 a.m.””

Maya sat up straight.

“What is she doing?”” Carter asked.

The technician paused.

“She isn't eating breakfast. She's standing beside the administrative terminal near the cafeteria entrance.””

Maya felt a chill move through her.

The technician continued.

“She's there for approximately four minutes. At 8:10, she leaves the terminal and walks toward the hallway.””

Principal Carter exchanged a glance with Maya.

“The request was created at 8:14,” Maya whispered.

The technician heard her.

“Yes. That's the timestamp on the request.””

Principal Carter asked him to preserve the footage and send it to the district security team.

When the call ended, Maya stared at the wall.

Vanessa had been near an administrative terminal eight minutes before the request was created.

That was not proof she had used it.

It was not proof she had accessed Principal Carter's credentials.

But it was the first concrete link between Vanessa and the timeline.

Principal Carter rested both hands on her desk.

“We need to be careful about what this means.””

Maya nodded.

“I know.””

“If Vanessa accessed a terminal, there may be an innocent explanation. We need to establish whether she logged in, what system was available, and whether the timestamps are synchronized.””

“I understand.””

“Until we know more, don't confront her.””

Maya looked up.

“I'm not going to confront her.””

Principal Carter studied her face.

“Good.””

Maya picked up her backpack.

She was almost at the door when the principal's tablet chimed.

A new message had arrived from the district security team.

Carter opened it.

Her face went still.

“What is it?”” Maya asked.

The principal turned the screen around.

*PRELIMINARY ACCESS REVIEW COMPLETE.*

Beneath it was a short note:

*THE 8:14 A.M. REQUEST WAS CREATED THROUGH A SESSION AUTHENTICATED BEFORE THE CAFETERIA TERMINAL FOOTAGE BEGINS.*

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Principal Carter read the note again.

“It means we haven't yet established that the person at the terminal created the request.””

Maya looked at the screen.

“So Vanessa could have been there, and someone else could have created it.””

“Yes.””

“Or she could have used the terminal after someone logged in.””

“That's also possible.””

Maya swallowed.

For a moment, the room felt too small.

She had wanted one clear answer, one piece of evidence that would finally explain what was happening.

Instead, each discovery opened another gap between what she knew and what she could prove.

Principal Carter locked the tablet.

“We'll continue the investigation tomorrow morning. The district will preserve the records overnight.””

Maya nodded, but she wasn't listening anymore.

She was remembering Vanessa's face in the cafeteria.

The way her smile had vanished when the timestamp appeared.

The way she had mouthed those three words.

You should've stayed quiet.

Maya stepped into the hallway.

Her phone vibrated once.

An unknown number had sent her a message.

*STOP ASKING ABOUT 8:14.*

Maya froze.

A second message arrived before she could react.

*YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN LOSE EVERYTHING.*

She stared at the screen, her fingers tightening around the phone.

Then she looked through the glass office door at Principal Carter.

Someone knew what she was investigating.

May you like

And whoever it was had just made one thing clear.

They weren't finished trying to silence her.
