Chapter 8: The Record That Was Never Supposed to Exist

The next morning, Maya arrived at Westbridge High before the first bell.

She had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the expulsion request on Principal Carter's tablet. She heard the words from the anonymous message.

Stop asking about 8:14.

She had saved the screenshots in two places and written down the times of every important conversation. She hadn't replied to the unknown number.

She had also made a decision.

She wasn't going to let fear make her disappear.

At 7:38 a.m., she entered the administrative office.

Principal Carter was already at her desk, speaking on the phone. She motioned for Maya to sit.

“I understand,” Carter said into the receiver.

“But I need written confirmation that the disputed request will not affect the student's access while the review is pending.””

She listened.

“No. I will not treat a system-generated instruction as a final disciplinary decision.””

Another pause.

“Please send the confirmation directly to me.””

She ended the call.

Maya leaned forward.

“Did they restrict my account?””

“Not yet. The district has temporarily paused the scheduled restriction while the request is reviewed.””

“Can I still access my student portal?””

“Yes.””

Maya took out her phone and checked.

The login screen appeared.

She entered her credentials.

For a moment, the loading symbol spun.

Then her dashboard opened.

Her grades were there. Her class schedule was there. Her attendance record was there.

But a red notification appeared at the top of the page.

*DISCIPLINARY REVIEW — ACTION REQUIRED.*

Maya's shoulders stiffened.

Principal Carter leaned over.

“Don't open anything yet. Let me confirm that the portal is displaying the correct notice.””

Maya pulled the phone closer.

“It's my account.””

“I know. But I want to make sure the system hasn't attached another incorrect status.””

“Every time I look at something, somebody tells me not to touch it.””

The principal straightened.

“You're right. I should have explained that better. You can open your own student notice. I simply want to document what appears.””

Maya tapped the notification.

A page loaded with the same expulsion request reference number.

Under the disciplinary summary was a new section.

*STUDENT RESPONSE DEADLINE: 3:00 P.M. TODAY.*

Maya stared at it.

“Today?””

Principal Carter read the screen.

“This is an automated deadline. It doesn't mean the request has been approved.””

“Then why am I being asked to respond to an accusation before the school has identified who made it?””

“Because the system generated a response window when the request was submitted.””

“Eight fourteen yesterday morning?””

“Yes.””

Maya shook her head.

“Someone could have filed this before lunch, attached a video after the fight, and given me less than a day to defend myself.””

Principal Carter looked troubled.

“That's why I've asked the district to suspend the deadline while the request is under investigation.””

Maya opened the notice.

It contained a brief summary of the allegation, followed by a field for the student's response.

She began typing.

I did not initiate the cafeteria altercation. Vanessa poured chocolate milk over Lena's head, shoved me, and attempted to punch me. I blocked the punch and moved her away from me when she charged again. The school's original cafeteria footage documents the sequence of events.

She stopped.

Then she added:

The submitted seven-second clip does not show the full incident. I request that the complete security footage, the original file metadata, and the administrative audit trail be considered before any disciplinary decision is made.

Maya read the statement twice.

“Is that enough?”” she asked.

Principal Carter pulled a chair beside her.

“It's a clear factual response. You should include only what you personally observed and what you can support with evidence.””

“That's what I did.””

“Then submit it.””

Maya pressed the button.

A confirmation appeared.

*STUDENT RESPONSE RECEIVED — 8:03 A.M.*

She exhaled.

For the first time since the fight, she'd been able to put her side of the story into the system that was being used against her.

Principal Carter printed a copy of the confirmation.

“Keep this,” she said.

Maya folded the paper and placed it in her backpack.

“Now what?””

“Now we wait for the district's review.””

Maya looked at the clock.

“I hate waiting.””

“So do I.””

The unexpected honesty made Maya glance up.

Principal Carter gave a tired smile.

“Believe me, Maya, I have spent enough time waiting for district investigations to know how frustrating they can be. But we need the actual records, not assumptions.””

Maya nodded.

At 8:17, Ms. Brooks arrived with Lena.

Lena wore her own beige T-shirt again, freshly washed. She carried a notebook and a folder containing the statement she'd written the previous day.

“I wanted to check whether you were okay,” she told Maya.

“I'm here.””

“Did you submit your response?””

Maya held up the printed confirmation.

“Just did.””

Lena smiled faintly.

“Good.””

Ms. Brooks placed Lena's statement on the principal's desk.

“We've documented the previous cafeteria incident, the demand to delete the recording, and the conversation Vanessa had with Lena yesterday.””

Principal Carter reviewed the papers.

“Thank you. We'll add the statement to the separate bullying investigation.””

Maya looked at Lena.

“Did you hear anything from Vanessa this morning?””

Lena shook her head.

“No. But I saw her outside the cafeteria.””

“What was she doing?””

“Talking to two students. When she saw me, she stopped.””

Maya felt the familiar tension settle in her chest.

“Did she say anything?””

Lena hesitated.

“She asked whether you'd submitted a response.””

Maya stared at her.

“How would she know about the deadline?””

“Anyone who saw the notice might know,” Lena replied.

“Or she might have heard it from someone.””

Principal Carter closed the folder.

“We shouldn't assume how she learned that information. If she contacts either of you again, document it and report it.””

Maya nodded.

Then the principal's tablet chimed.

A message from Denise Walker appeared.

*DISTRICT SECURITY UPDATE: AUDIT LOG EXPORTED FOR REVIEW.*

Carter opened the attachment.

The document contained a sequence of administrative events with timestamps, account references, and action descriptions.

Maya leaned closer as the principal scrolled.

At 8:14 a.m., the expulsion request had been created.

At 12:49 p.m., the cafeteria incident reference had been attached.

At 12:51 p.m., the video file had been uploaded.

At 1:02 p.m., the disciplinary status had been changed to pending review.

Maya stared at the sequence.

“Can you see who made the changes?””

“Not from this summary,” Principal Carter said.

“The account identifiers are partially masked.””

“Then what's the point of the report?””

“It establishes the order of events. The district is examining the underlying authentication records.””

Carter scrolled farther down.

A final entry appeared.

*8:16 A.M. — ACCESS PERMISSION MODIFIED.*

Maya's breath caught.

“That was two minutes after the request.””

Principal Carter opened the entry details.

The screen displayed a note.

*STUDENT RECORD VISIBILITY: RESTRICTED.*

Maya stared at the words.

“Someone tried to hide my own record from me before the fight even happened.””

“That's what the entry appears to indicate,” Carter replied.

“We still need the complete audit details to determine who initiated it and whether the change was applied.””

Lena covered her mouth.

“Why would anyone do that?””

Nobody answered.

Principal Carter sent the document to Denise with a request for urgent review.

Then she closed the tablet.

“Maya, I want you to go to class. Your attendance and access are intact, and I don't want this investigation to take away your education while it proceeds.””

Maya stood reluctantly.

“Can I ask one more thing?””

“Of course.””

“If the district finds out who created the request, will you tell me?””

“Yes,” Principal Carter said.

“Subject to the rules governing the investigation, I will explain what we can confirm.””

Maya nodded.

She and Lena left the office together.

As they passed the cafeteria entrance, Maya glanced at the administrative terminal.

It sat against the wall, its screen dark, its keyboard tucked neatly beneath the counter.

Vanessa had been standing beside it at 8:06 the previous morning.

The request had appeared eight minutes later.

The connection was still unproven.

But the timeline was becoming harder to ignore.

At the end of the corridor, Lena stopped.

“Maya?””

“What?””

“I remembered something else about yesterday.””

Maya turned.

“When Vanessa was threatening me, she said she didn't care whether I kept the video.””

Maya frowned.

“What did she care about?””

Lena gripped the strap of her backpack.

“She said the video wasn't the problem anymore.””

Maya felt a chill move through her.

“What did she say was the problem?””

Lena looked directly at her.

“She said, 'The problem is who else saw it.''”

Maya stood perfectly still.

Who else had seen Lena's recording?

Who else knew what Vanessa had done?

And why would that matter enough for someone to prepare an expulsion request before the cafeteria fight?

Before Maya could ask another question, her phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from the district records office.

The subject line read:

*NOTICE OF PRESERVATION — DISCIPLINARY RECORD 8:14 A.M.*

Maya opened it.

The message was short.

The district had preserved the original request, the associated video, and the access logs for further review.

At the bottom was one additional sentence.

*A separate document associated with the same request has been identified and will be reviewed for relevance.*

Maya read it again.

A separate document.

She looked up at Lena.

The mystery had grown, but not because someone had introduced a new threat.

It was the same request, the same morning, the same attempt to control what the school believed about Maya.

Someone had created more than one piece of paperwork.

And the district had finally found the other one.
