Chapter 4: The Doctor's Report

“Michael, please put the papers down.””

Vanessa stood beside the dresser with both hands pressed against her stomach. Her wedding ring caught the light as she twisted it around her finger. For six years, I had watched her do that whenever she was nervous.

I had always thought it was harmless.

Now I wondered how many times she had stood in this room, turning that ring while planning something I would never have imagined.

I kept the medical document in my hand.

“Why did you take Lily to a doctor two months ago without telling me?””

“She had a problem.””

“What problem?””

“She was having episodes.””

“What kind of episodes?””

Vanessa looked toward the bedroom door.

“Michael, this is not the time.””

I took a step closer.

“You signed a medical form about my daughter. You made claims about her behavior. You hid the appointment from me. You don't get to decide when it's convenient to explain yourself.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She was acting strangely. I was worried.””

“Then why didn't you call me?””

“Because you would have accused me of overreacting!””

I stared at her.

“I'm accusing you now because I have a reason.””

She flinched.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. The only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioner and the distant rumble of a truck passing outside.

Then Vanessa reached for the medical report.

“Give it to me.””

I moved it behind my back.

“No.””

“You don't even know what you're reading.””

“Then tell me.””

She pressed her lips together.

I pulled out my phone and called the pediatrician's office. Rachel had already given me the name of the doctor, and the receptionist transferred me to his line after I explained that I was Lily's father.

A man answered.

“This is Dr. Bennett.””

“Doctor, my name is Michael. I'm Lily's father. My sister is with her at your office right now.””

“Yes, Mr. Carter. I was hoping to speak with you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you find?””

“First, I need to be careful about discussing confidential medical information over the phone. But given what your sister has described, I believe you should bring Lily in for a full examination today.””

“Is she seriously ill?””

There was a pause.

“She appears undernourished, and we need to assess her hydration and overall condition. I don't want to speculate before completing the examination.””

I gripped the edge of the dresser.

“Was she brought to your practice two months ago?””

“Yes. According to the record, Vanessa brought her in.””

“What did Vanessa report?””

“She described recurring episodes of dizziness, unusual food-seeking behavior, and what she characterized as unexplained emotional outbursts.””

I looked at my wife.

She had stopped crying.

“Food-seeking behavior?”” I repeated.

“That was the wording in the intake notes. There were also concerns about possible neglect, but the information recorded at the time came primarily from the accompanying adult. We documented our observations and recommended follow-up.””

“Was any diagnosis made?””

“No definitive diagnosis. I want to make that clear. We did not establish that Lily had a behavioral disorder.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did you tell Vanessa to restrict her food?””

“No. Absolutely not. We would never recommend withholding meals as punishment.””

I ended the call after arranging to meet Rachel at the office.

When I looked up, Vanessa had moved toward the doorway.

“You heard him,” I said.

“He didn't tell you to restrict her food.””

She turned around.

“I never said he did.””

“You made Lily sound like a problem that needed to be removed.””

“I was trying to get help!””

“Then why did you hide the appointment?””

Her voice rose.

“Because I knew you would react exactly like this!””

I shook my head.

“No, Vanessa. You knew I would ask questions.””

I walked past her and headed downstairs.

She followed, calling my name twice, but I didn't stop.

In the kitchen, I found the black phone Mason had given me. I had paused the recording after hearing Vanessa discuss Lily. I sat at the island and resumed it.

Static.

A door closing.

Then Vanessa again.

“If the doctor writes down enough concerns, the agency will take this seriously.””

A second voice answered.

I turned up the volume.

“Are you sure Michael won't find out?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“He won't. He's too busy playing the perfect provider. By the time he understands what's happening, the placement will already be arranged.””

My fingers went numb.

The other voice spoke again.

“And Mason?””

“He'll stay with me, obviously. He's my son.””

“What about Lily?””

Vanessa's response was so quiet I almost missed it.

“Once she's gone, everything will finally be normal.””

I stopped the recording.

I couldn't bear to hear more.

The front door opened, and Mason entered with Rachel's husband, who had driven him back from the pediatrician's office after Rachel stayed with Lily.

Mason spotted me at the kitchen island.

“Did you listen to it?””

I nodded.

He looked down.

“Are you mad at me?””

The question struck me harder than anything Vanessa had said.

I stood and knelt in front of him.

“Mad at you? No, buddy. Not even a little.””

“But I took Mom's phone.””

“You were trying to protect Lily.””

His eyes filled.

“I should have told you sooner.””

I placed both hands on his shoulders.

“You're ten years old. You shouldn't have had to figure out how to protect your sister from an adult.””

He began to cry.

I pulled him into a hug, and he clung to me with a desperation that made me realize how frightened he had been.

Behind us, Vanessa entered the kitchen.

“Mason, come here.””

He immediately tightened his arms around me.

She stopped.

“I'm your mother,” she said.

“You don't need to be afraid of me.””

Mason looked at her through his tears.

“Then why did you tell that person Lily had to disappear?””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I stood up.

“Go sit in the living room, Mason. Rachel's husband will stay with you.””

Mason hesitated, then obeyed.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You're not going near either child alone until I understand what you've done.””

“You can't keep my own son from me!””

“I'm not making permanent decisions about Mason. I'm making sure both children are safe.””

She grabbed the edge of the island.

“You're destroying my life over a misunderstanding.””

I looked at the sandwich still sitting on the counter.

“Your life isn't the only one that matters.””

My phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from Rachel.

Dr. Bennett found something else in Lily's chart. He wants to speak with you in person. Please come now.

I grabbed my keys.

Vanessa stepped in front of the door.

“If you walk out now, Michael, you may never understand why I did this.””

I stared at her.

“Then you'd better hope the truth is better than what I've already heard.””

I moved around her and left.

As I drove toward the doctor's office, one question kept repeating in my mind.

May you like

What had Vanessa told the doctor about my daughter that she was so desperate to keep hidden?

And why had someone else been helping her?
