Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Wife's Secret

The old courthouse stood between a closed bank and a coffee shop that had been there longer than I could remember.

I arrived twenty minutes early.

Emily's letter sat inside the inner pocket of my jacket. I'd made copies of every page and stored them separately, and I'd sent the relevant information to my attorney before leaving home.

I wasn't going to hand over the original envelope to a stranger.

Not without knowing who I was dealing with.

At 10:07 a.m., a man in a charcoal coat approached the bench where I was sitting.

He was in his early sixties, with silver hair, a narrow nose, and a leather briefcase worn pale at the corners.

“Michael Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Robert Hale. I represented Emily during the guardianship dispute.””

I stood.

“You were her lawyer?””

“For a time.””

“Why didn't I know about you?””

“Because Emily asked me not to contact you unless she was unable to resolve the matter herself.””

He opened his briefcase and removed a folder.

“Before we begin, I need to be clear. I can explain the documents Emily left with me, but I cannot verify every claim Daniel has made. Some of the people involved are still alive, and their accounts differ.””

I nodded.

“Tell me about Grace.””

Robert sat down.

“Grace was born before Emily married you. Daniel initially agreed to a temporary guardianship arrangement because Emily was dealing with medical complications and had limited support. The arrangement was supposed to be reviewed after several weeks.””

“What happened?””

“Daniel's family became involved. They believed Emily was unstable and would struggle to care for an infant. Daniel signed additional paperwork, and Grace was placed with a relative while the adults disputed what should happen next.””

“Did Emily lose custody?””

“Not through a final court order that permanently terminated her parental rights. That's an important distinction.””

I leaned forward.

“Then why didn't she bring Grace home?””

Robert looked down at the folder.

“Because the case became complicated, and Emily eventually withdrew from active litigation. She believed she could negotiate privately. Daniel interpreted her withdrawal as surrender.””

I felt anger rising in my chest.

“She just gave up?””

“No,” Robert said firmly.

“She tried to protect both children from a prolonged legal battle. Whether she made the right decision is not for me to judge.””

He removed a photocopy from the folder.

It was an agreement signed by Emily and Daniel. Several sections were highlighted.

The document established temporary caregiving arrangements and outlined conditions for reviewing Grace's placement.

One paragraph had been crossed out in blue ink.

“What does this mean?”” I asked.

Robert adjusted his glasses.

“It concerns a proposed transfer of guardianship. The handwritten alteration was made after the original document was signed. I cannot tell you who made it without reviewing the original and obtaining appropriate verification.””

“Was it legal?””

“That depends on the circumstances and the governing law at the time. I would not draw conclusions from this copy alone.””

I studied the signatures.

Emily's was unmistakable.

Daniel's looked different from the signature on the bottom of the altered paragraph.

“Could someone have changed this after they signed it?””

“It's possible. That's why the original matters.””

I looked up.

“Where is it?””

Robert hesitated.

“Emily gave me a sealed packet shortly before she died. I was instructed to release it to you if there was evidence that someone was attempting to use Lily's identity or placement to reopen the dispute.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone has been trying to arrange for Lily to be removed from my home.””

“I know. I've been informed that a placement inquiry was submitted.””

“By my wife.””

Robert's expression darkened.

“Then the matter requires immediate scrutiny.””

He took another document from the folder.

“This is a letter Emily wrote to me three days before her death.””

I read it.

Robert, I have reason to believe the original agreement has been altered. Daniel says he has a copy that gives him broader authority than the version I signed. I don't know who changed it, and I don't want to accuse anyone without proof.

The next paragraph made my hands go cold.

If anything happens to me before we can resolve this, please ensure that Lily is not drawn into the dispute. Daniel has recently suggested that the two girls could be brought together through a private arrangement. I am afraid he intends to use the uncertainty surrounding Grace's guardianship to pressure me.

I looked at Robert.

“Did you investigate?””

“I attempted to. Emily's death interrupted the process. Afterward, the family asked me to preserve the documents, but no formal challenge was brought.””

“Why not?””

“Because the people who might have challenged the agreement couldn't agree on what had happened. And because Daniel's legal position was never fully established.””

I stared at the letter.

Emily had been afraid of Daniel's intentions before she died.

Yet she had still wanted Grace and Lily to know each other.

“Did Emily die in an accident?”” I asked.

Robert's expression changed.

“According to the official record, yes.””

“Was there ever an investigation into anything suspicious?””

“Not to my knowledge. Why are you asking?””

I told him about the photograph, the recording, and Vanessa's involvement in the placement inquiry.

I didn't leave anything out.

When I finished, Robert closed the folder.

“Michael, I cannot tell you that Daniel caused your wife's death. There is no evidence of that in the documents I've reviewed. But I can tell you that Emily was worried about the guardianship agreement and wanted the original preserved.””

“Can I see it?””

Robert reached into the briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

He placed it between us.

The paper was yellowed at the edges, and Emily's signature crossed the flap.

I stared at it for several seconds.

Then I opened it carefully.

Inside was the original agreement, a handwritten note, and a photograph of Emily holding a baby.

On the back, she had written:

Grace, six weeks old. I will never stop loving you.

I felt tears sting my eyes.

Emily had never stopped thinking about her first daughter.

She had carried that secret through our marriage, through Lily's birth, and through the years when I believed we were building a life without anything left unsaid.

I folded the photograph and returned it to the envelope.

“Can I keep this?””

Robert nodded.

“I'll provide you with copies and arrange for the original to be examined by the appropriate professionals. Please don't confront Daniel with the document before your attorney has reviewed it.””

I slipped the envelope into my jacket.

As I stood, Robert caught my arm.

“One more thing.””

I turned.

“Emily mentioned someone else in her final meeting with me. A woman who had agreed to care for Grace temporarily.””

“Who?””

Robert opened his folder again.

He showed me a handwritten name and an address.

I recognized the surname immediately.

It belonged to Vanessa's family.

My mouth went dry.

“Vanessa's mother?””

Robert nodded.

“Emily said the woman had offered to help, but she became concerned when Daniel began demanding access to the child.””

I stared at the name.

Vanessa had told me her mother had never met Emily.

She had also told me that Daniel was a dangerous man who had tried to take Mason away from her.

Now I was discovering that the two families had been connected long before Vanessa and I met.

“Why would Vanessa's mother be involved?””

“I don't know,” Robert said.

“But I suggest you ask her.””

I left the courthouse and sat in my car.

For several minutes, I stared at the steering wheel.

Then I called Vanessa's mother, Margaret.

She answered after the fourth ring.

“Michael? Is everything all right?””

“I need to ask you about Emily.””

Silence.

Then a quiet, frightened voice.

“What have you found?””

My heart began pounding.

“You know about Grace.””

Margaret started crying.

“Oh, Michael. I prayed this day would never come.””

I gripped the phone.

“Tell me what happened.””

She drew a shaky breath.

“Emily came to me because she was afraid Daniel would take Grace away permanently. She wanted me to help her protect both girls.””

“Did you?””

“I tried.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa begged me not to.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did Vanessa have to do with any of this?””

Margaret's answer was barely audible.

“Michael, Vanessa didn't meet Daniel by accident. She knew who he was before she married you.””

I sat frozen.

Margaret continued.

“And there is something else. Something I never told anyone.””

“What?””

“On the night Emily died, Vanessa called me from the hospital. She said she'd found something in Emily's belongings.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What did she find?””

May you like

Margaret whispered five words.

“The original guardianship agreement was missing.””
