Chapter 6: The Night My First Wife Died
For several minutes, I couldn't move.
The photograph was grainy, as if it had been taken from a distance. Vanessa stood beneath the fluorescent lights of a hospital corridor, her hair pulled into a ponytail and her coat draped over one arm.
Daniel Cross stood beside her.
He was younger in the picture, with a narrow face and dark hair that fell over his forehead. I recognized him immediately.
He had been present at my first wife's funeral.
He had sent a sympathy card after Lily's second birthday.
And Vanessa had told me, repeatedly, that she had barely spoken to him since her previous marriage ended.
The photograph had been taken six years earlier.
The timestamp in the email placed it on the night my first wife, Emily, died.
I read the message again.
If you want to know why Vanessa chose Lily, ask her what happened the night your first wife died.
My hands began to shake.
Rachel noticed.
“Michael? What's wrong?””
I showed her the photograph.
She studied it, then looked at me.
“Who is that man?””
“Daniel Cross. Vanessa's former brother-in-law.””
“Why would he be with Vanessa at the hospital that night?””
“I don't know.””
“Have you asked her?””
“Not yet.””
Rachel's expression hardened.
“Then I think you should.””
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting on the examination table, swinging her feet while she colored the house again. She had drawn windows this time, but every window was covered with thick black lines.
I couldn't ask Vanessa anything until Lily was somewhere safe.
“Rachel, take her home with you tonight,” I said.
“I'll arrange for Mason to join you. I need to go back to the house and find out what's happening.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You shouldn't go alone.””
“I won't be alone for long. I'm calling the authorities and my attorney before I speak to Vanessa.””
“Michael, what if she becomes angry?””
“Then I leave.””
Rachel studied me for a moment.
Finally, she nodded.
“Promise me you'll keep your head.””
“I promise.””
Before I left, I returned to Lily's side.
“Sweetheart, Aunt Rachel is going to take you somewhere comfortable tonight. Mason will be there, too.””
She looked up.
“Are you coming?””
“I'll be there as soon as I can.””
“Will Mommy be there?””
I hesitated.
“Not tonight.””
Her shoulders relaxed so noticeably that I felt another wave of guilt.
She had been waiting for permission to feel safe.
I kissed her forehead.
“You don't have to worry about tomorrow. The grown-ups are going to handle it.””
She wrapped her arms around me.
“Okay, Daddy.””
Then, just as I turned away, she whispered, “Please don't let them take me.””
I stopped.
I crouched in front of her and held both her hands.
“No one is going to make decisions about you without making sure you're safe. I will do everything I can to protect you.””
She searched my face.
Then she nodded.
I left the clinic with the photograph burning in my mind.
When I arrived home, Vanessa was sitting on the living-room sofa with her laptop open and a glass of untouched water beside her.
She looked up.
“Where are the children?””
“Safe.””
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the laptop.
“Where?””
“That's not what we're discussing.””
She closed the laptop.
“You've been talking to Rachel. To the doctor. To strangers from an agency. Have you considered asking me what happened before you decided I'm some kind of monster?””
I placed my phone on the coffee table.
“I have a question.””
She looked at me warily.
“What?””
I turned the screen toward her.
The photograph filled the display.
For one second, she looked confused.
Then she went completely still.
“Where did you get that?””
“Someone emailed it to me.””
She stood up so quickly that the glass of water tipped over. It rolled across the table, spilling water over a stack of magazines.
“Who sent it?””
“I don't know. But I want to know why you were with Daniel at the hospital the night Emily died.””
Vanessa stared at the picture.
Then she looked toward the hallway, as though she expected someone to appear there.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She pressed both hands against her face.
“Michael, that night was complicated.””
“Emily was my wife. She died in a hospital. I was there when they told me she was gone.
I remember every second of that night. I never saw you or Daniel.””
“You weren't there for all of it.””
The words stopped me cold.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“After Emily died, you were devastated. You couldn't sleep. You couldn't eat.
You barely spoke to anyone. You left the hospital with Lily, and everything happened so quickly.””
I stared at her.
“I remember leaving with my daughter.””
“Then you remember more than you think.””
“What are you talking about?””
She walked toward the window.
“Daniel came to the hospital because he knew someone who worked there. He wanted to help.””
“Help whom?””
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, what happened that night?””
She turned toward me.
“Emily had made arrangements before she died.””
My heart pounded.
“What arrangements?””
“She was worried about Lily.””
“Worried about what?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Emily thought you might not be able to raise Lily alone if something happened to her. She had spoken to Daniel about temporary guardianship.””
I shook my head.
“That's impossible. Emily and I had discussed guardianship. We agreed my sister Rachel would help if anything happened to either of us.””
“That's what you believed.””
I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.
“Are you saying Emily wanted Daniel to raise Lily?””
“No. Not exactly.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“She wanted someone else to be available if you couldn't cope. Daniel knew about the arrangement, and he came to the hospital that night because Emily had contacted him before she died.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because you were grieving.””
“That's not an answer.””
“Daniel thought it would destroy you. I thought it would make things worse.””
“And six years later, you're using this to justify trying to remove my daughter?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
For a moment, she looked genuinely horrified by the accusation.
Then she reached for my hand.
“Michael, I never wanted to hurt Lily. I wanted things to be easier. I thought if she lived somewhere else, I could finally be a good mother to Mason without constantly fighting with you about her.””
I pulled my hand away.
“You wanted to get rid of a seven-year-old because she needed food and affection.””
“I was overwhelmed!””
“Then you should have asked for help.””
“I did!””
“Not from me.””
Vanessa looked down.
The silence between us seemed to stretch for miles.
Finally, I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Did Daniel help you arrange the placement?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
The word came out so quietly that I almost missed it.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She wiped her face.
“He knew people who could help. He said the agency would take my concerns seriously if I documented Lily's behavior. He said you might agree to a temporary arrangement if the professionals recommended it.””
“And the recording?””
“He was the person I was talking to.””
I remembered the voice on the phone.
The questions.
The quiet reassurance.
Daniel had been involved from the beginning.
“Did he tell you to restrict Lily's food?””
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“No. That was my decision.””
It was the first honest thing she had said all day.
And somehow, that made everything worse.
I picked up my phone.
“I'm going to contact the agency and tell them everything you've admitted.””
Her face went white.
“You can't do that.””
“I can.””
“Michael, please. If they investigate me, I could lose Mason.””
I looked at her.
“Did you think about that when you locked Lily out of the pantry?””
She began crying.
“I made a mistake.””
“You made a series of choices.””
I walked toward the front door.
Behind me, she called my name.
“Wait!””
I stopped but didn't turn around.
“There is something else you need to know.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Daniel didn't contact me because he wanted to help Lily.””
I turned slowly.
She was staring at the photograph on my phone.
“He contacted me because he believes Lily's mother left something behind. Something that belongs to him.””
My heart began to race.
“What could Emily possibly have left him?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know exactly. But Daniel believes it was hidden before she died. He said if Lily ever left your care, the person responsible for the placement would have access to information you never knew existed.””
I stared at her.
The room seemed suddenly unfamiliar.
“What information?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Something about Emily's death.””
Before I could ask another question, my phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice came through, calm and unmistakable.
“Michael. It's Daniel.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want?””
“I assume you've seen the photograph.””
“Tell me what you know about Emily.””
He sighed.
“Not over the phone.””
“Then tell me why you've been helping my wife arrange to have my daughter removed from my home.””
“Because Vanessa made a promise to me.””
“What promise?””
A pause.
Then Daniel spoke.
“She promised that once Lily was out of your house, she would give me the one thing Emily took from me before she died.””
My pulse hammered in my ears.
“What did Emily take?””
Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.
“My daughter.””
I went completely still.
“Your daughter?””
“Yes, Michael. And if you want to understand why Emily kept that secret from you, you'd better find the envelope hidden behind Lily's birth certificate.””
The call ended.
I stood in the doorway, unable to breathe.
May you like
Because I knew exactly where Lily's birth certificate was kept.
And if Daniel was telling the truth, the next thing I discovered could change everything I thought I knew about my family.
