Chapter 4: The Woman My Father Tried To Forget
Daniel didn’t move.
The phone remained pressed against his ear even though the call had already ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The silence in my father’s office felt heavier than before.
Like the walls themselves were holding secrets.
“Daniel,” I said softly.
He looked at me.
But he wasn’t seeing me.
His mind was somewhere else.
Somewhere years away.
Emily stepped closer.
“Who was that?””
Daniel lowered the phone.
“No one.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Emily let out a sharp laugh.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“A woman calls you after our father’s mysterious death, tells you someone else was supposed to die, and your answer is ‘no one’?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Drop it.””
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No, Daniel. Not this time.””
The two of them stared at each other.
I had seen them fight before.
Over money.
Over business.
Over who deserved more of Dad’s attention.
But this was different.
This wasn’t anger.
This was fear.
Thomas walked toward Daniel.
“You know who she is.””
Daniel looked away.
“I knew her a long time ago.””
“A long time ago?”” Thomas repeated.
“Your father’s note mentioned someone who knew the truth. Then we find a photograph of this woman hidden in his office. Now she calls you.””
Daniel ran his hand over his face.
“This isn’t what you think.””
“Then explain.””
He didn’t.
That was the problem.
Daniel always had an answer.
Even when he was wrong, he had something to say.
But now he looked like a man trapped inside a story he never wanted to tell.
I picked up the photograph again.
The woman in the picture looked familiar somehow.
Not because I had seen her before.
Because she looked like someone my father remembered.
She was smiling beside him.
Not the polite smile he used at business events.
A real smile.
A younger version of my father.
A version I had never known.
“Who is she?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at the photo.
Then quietly said:
“Her name is Claire Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Thomas reacted.
His eyes widened.
“You’re sure?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You know her?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Thomas?””
The lawyer slowly sat down.
“I knew of her.””
“What does that mean?”” Emily asked.
Thomas stared at the photograph.
“Claire Whitmore was involved with your father before he built Hale Construction.””
Emily frowned.
“Involved how?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then said:
“She was his business partner.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t Dad ever tell us?””
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“Because Dad didn’t tell us a lot of things.””
Emily grabbed the photo.
“Business partner?””
She looked at the woman again.
“Then why was she hidden?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“Because Claire disappeared.””
“When?”” I asked.
“Twenty-eight years ago.””
The number shocked me.
I looked at the picture again.
Twenty-eight years.
That was before I was born.
Before Emily.
Before Daniel became the person everyone knew.
“What happened to her?”” I asked.
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Your father said she left.””
“And?””
“And some people believed she didn’t.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at the three of us.
“Because shortly after she disappeared, Richard Hale changed.””
Daniel scoffed.
“Changed?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
The lawyer sighed.
“He became more aggressive. More secretive. He stopped trusting people.””
Emily looked around the room.
“And now he writes a letter saying someone close to him caused his death.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The woman in the photograph might be connected to everything.
Daniel suddenly grabbed his coat.
“I need to find her.””
I stepped in front of him.
“What?””
“I need to talk to Claire.””
“Why?””
“Because she knows what happened.””
“How do you know?””
Daniel looked at me.
And for the first time since Dad died, he looked completely honest.
“Because she was the last person my father trusted before he stopped trusting everyone.””
Thomas stood.
“You’re not going alone.””
Daniel looked annoyed.
“I don’t need protection.””
“You might.””
The words hung in the air.
Daniel looked at him.
“What exactly are you saying?””
Thomas picked up the photograph.
“I’m saying your father’s final days were not random.””
He pointed at the woman.
“Someone wanted this picture found.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at the damaged office.
“The person who searched this room didn’t take everything.””
Emily looked confused.
“What do you mean?””
“They left the photograph.””
Everyone went quiet.
He was right.
The room had been searched.
Drawers emptied.
Files moved.
But the photograph was on the floor.
Visible.
Waiting for us.
“They wanted us to see her,” Thomas said.
Daniel stared at the photo.
“Then they wanted us to find Claire.””
“Exactly.””
A sudden sound came from downstairs.
The front door.
Slamming shut.
Everyone froze.
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
“Did anyone invite someone here?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel moved first.
“Stay here.””
This time, nobody argued.
He walked down the stairs.
Thomas followed.
Emily and I stayed behind.
I hated how quickly our lives had changed.
Three days ago, I was choosing flowers for my father’s funeral.
Now I was standing in his office, searching for clues about who wanted him dead.
A few minutes passed.
Then Daniel shouted:
“Lily!””
I ran downstairs.
The front door was open.
Cold air rushed into the house.
Daniel stood outside holding something.
A small envelope.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He handed it to me.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
*For Lily.*
My hands shook.
“When did this arrive?””
Daniel looked toward the driveway.
“There was nobody there.””
Thomas stepped outside.
“No car?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No footprints either.””
I stared at the envelope.
It felt impossible.
Like my father was still controlling every step we took.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few lines.
*Lily,*
*If you found Claire, then you know I failed to protect the people I loved.*
My heart tightened.
I continued.
*Do not trust the story Daniel tells you.*
I looked up.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
I kept reading.
*But do not assume Daniel is the person who betrayed me. The truth is more complicated than that.*
Everyone stared at the letter.
Then came the final line.
The one that made my blood run cold.
*The person who poisoned me is not my enemy. They are my family.*
Emily stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Lily, I can explain.””
But before he could say another word, my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a woman spoke.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow…
I knew exactly who it was.
“Lily Hale?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Yes?””
The woman was silent.
Then she whispered:
“I’m Claire Whitmore.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The woman continued:
“I’m sorry your father is dead.””
A pause.
Then her voice became urgent.
“But you need to know something before it’s too late.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the phone.
Terrified.
Claire whispered:
“Your father didn’t die because someone wanted his money.””
The rain started again outside.
Her next words changed everything.
“He died because he discovered which one of his children was not really his child.””
The call went silent.
And every person standing in that house looked at each other.
May you like
Because suddenly…
The inheritance wasn’t the biggest secret my father left behind.
