Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The First Child
The sound of the lock turning echoed through the mansion.
One click.
Then another.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The house that had once been my childhood home suddenly felt like a cage.
Daniel walked toward the front door and pulled the handle.
Nothing.
He pulled harder.
Still nothing.
“Locked.””
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Marcus looked toward the windows.
“Someone is still here.””
Emily grabbed my arm.
“What?””
Marcus’s eyes moved through the dark hallway.
“Richard had a security system installed years ago. The doors don’t lock themselves.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Then who activated it?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
Someone inside the house.
Someone who knew how everything worked.
Someone who had been close to my father.
Daniel stepped away from the door.
“Everyone stays together.””
Emily looked at him.
“Since when are you giving orders?””
“Since someone just trapped us inside.””
For once, nobody argued.
Not even Emily.
Because whatever secrets existed between us, there was one thing we all understood.
Someone wanted us afraid.
And they wanted us separated.
Marcus picked up the folder of birth records.
“We need to finish this.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Finish what?””
“The truth.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Apparently the truth is that I’m not even my father’s real son.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He shook his head.
“No, Lily. Let’s stop pretending.””
His voice cracked.
“Everyone spent my whole life telling me I was Richard Hale’s son.””
He looked at the photograph.
“The heir.””
“The future of the company.””
“The one who had to carry his name.””
He looked at the records again.
“And now I find out I was something else.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
“Don’t.””
The pain in his voice stopped everyone.
“I don’t need sympathy.””
Nobody responded.
Because he didn’t.
Not yet.
He needed answers.
Marcus slowly opened the folder again.
“Your father never cared about blood.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
“How?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because I was there when he found out.””
The room became silent.
“When?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at the documents.
“Three months ago.””
The same time my father began acting differently.
The same time he started hiding things.
“The DNA test,” Emily said.
Marcus nodded.
“Richard discovered a birth record that didn’t match what he had been told.””
Daniel stared.
“What record?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yours.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The words hurt more than any accusation.
“Who changed it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas spoke.
“The amendment request.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed toward the document.
“This signature.””
He touched the page.
“This is not Richard’s.””
Marcus nodded.
“No.””
“Then whose?””
Marcus looked toward the stairs.
And for a second, he looked afraid to say it.
“Someone who had access to the family records.””
Emily whispered:
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Thomas.
The lawyer immediately stiffened.
“No.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked between them.
“What?””
Thomas shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The silence said enough.
Daniel slowly turned toward Thomas.
“You changed my records?””
Thomas stepped back.
“No.””
“Then why are you looking like you’re guilty?””
“Because I recognize the signature.””
Everyone waited.
Thomas looked at the document.
“This handwriting belongs to Richard’s father.””
My breath caught.
“My grandfather?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather was the one who created the original family records.””
Emily frowned.
“But he died years ago.””
“Yes.””
“So how?””
Thomas looked at the page.
“Because this amendment was not made recently.””
He turned the document over.
“The date is from thirty years ago.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked confused.
“Thirty years?””
Marcus nodded.
“Before you were old enough to know anything.””
I felt a strange emptiness.
All this time, the secret had been there.
Not hidden for months.
Not hidden for years.
Decades.
“Then why did Dad investigate now?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
“Because he found proof someone had been trying to uncover it.””
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then said:
“Daniel.””
My brother looked up.
“What?””
“Someone was investigating you.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because they believed if your identity was exposed, they could destroy Richard’s company.””
Emily looked confused.
“But Daniel is still his son.””
“Not biologically.””
“But emotionally.””
Marcus nodded.
“That’s what Richard believed.””
The words surprised me.
Marcus continued.
“Your father told me something before he died.””
“What?””
He looked at Daniel.
“He said, ‘The person who tries to take my son away from me will never understand what family means.’”
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, his anger disappeared.
Only sadness remained.
My father had known.
He knew.
And he still chose Daniel.
The question was…
Who wanted that truth destroyed?
A loud noise came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
A door opening.
Marcus whispered:
“We’re not alone.””
Daniel grabbed a heavy object from the table.
Thomas looked nervous.
“This is a mistake.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What is?””
“Assuming the person upstairs is our enemy.””
Nobody understood.
Then Thomas said:
“Because there is someone else who knows about Daniel’s birth.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the staircase.
A figure appeared.
A woman.
Older.
Holding a flashlight.
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered:
“Claire.””
She stepped into the light.
Her face was different from the photograph.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Daniel.””
He stared at her.
“You’re alive.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Emily looked angry.
“You let us believe you disappeared.””
Claire looked at her.
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
Claire’s eyes moved toward the documents.
Then toward me.
“Your father tried to protect all of you.””
Daniel laughed.
“By hiding my entire life?””
Claire looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“By saving it.””
The room became quiet.
Claire walked closer.
“I need to tell you the truth before the person who did this comes back.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know who it is.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
Claire looked at Thomas.
The lawyer went still.
“No.””
Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.
“I’m sorry.””
Thomas stepped back.
“I never betrayed Richard.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not at first.””
The words hit harder than an accusation.
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at all of us.
“Thomas loved your father.””
Thomas looked away.
“But years ago, Richard made a decision that destroyed someone’s life.””
I frowned.
“What decision?””
Claire took a breath.
“The child in the photograph.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Your father knew Daniel was not his biological son.””
Daniel froze.
“But he raised me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Because the truth was dangerous.””
“Dangerous for who?””
Claire looked at Thomas.
“For the person who had spent years making sure nobody ever found out.””
Thomas whispered:
“No.””
Claire continued.
“The original birth record was not changed to steal an inheritance.””
She looked at Daniel.
“It was changed to protect you.””
Daniel stared.
“Protect me from what?””
Claire answered:
“From your real father.””
The room went silent.
Even the storm outside seemed to stop.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“My real father?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the table.
Toward the photograph.
Then she said the name.
A name that made Thomas close his eyes.
“Marcus Bell.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus looked devastated.
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“Daniel, I’m sorry.””
My mind struggled to understand.
Marcus.
The man who worked beside my father.
The man who brought us the records.
The man who claimed to protect the truth.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Is it true?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped back.
“Why?””
Marcus’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because your mother asked me to disappear.””
The room went silent.
“My mother?””
Marcus nodded.
“And Richard agreed.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You both lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because your biological father was dangerous.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He grabbed the folder from the table.
The birth records.
The evidence.
And ran toward the back hallway.
Daniel shouted:
“Thomas!””
The lawyer stopped at the door.
Then looked back.
His face was no longer calm.
No longer gentle.
For the first time…
we saw the man behind the mask.
“I’m sorry.””
Then he said the words that shattered everything.
May you like
“Richard was right to fear me.””
And the lights went out.
