Chapter 5: The Child Who Was Never Supposed To Know
Nobody spoke after Claire’s words.
Not Daniel.
Not Emily.
Not Thomas.
Not me.
The four of us stood inside my father’s doorway, frozen by a sentence that felt impossible to understand.
*Which one of his children was not really his child.*
My mind rejected it before I even had time to process it.
Because some truths are too large to enter your life all at once.
They have to break through slowly.
Like a crack spreading across glass.
“Claire,” I finally said into the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
Her breathing was shaky.
“I should have told your father the truth years ago.””
“Tell me now.””
“I can’t.””
My heart sank.
“You called me just to say that?””
“No,” she whispered.
“I called because Richard left instructions.””
I looked at Thomas.
He immediately stepped closer.
“What instructions?””
Claire heard him.
“Thomas Reed?””
The lawyer stiffened.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then Claire said:
“If Thomas is there, then Richard trusted him.””
Thomas looked relieved for only a second.
Then Claire continued.
“But trust does not mean he told him everything.””
Nobody moved.
Thomas looked offended.
“Claire, I have represented Richard for fifteen years.””
“And I knew him before he had a company.””
The words were calm.
But they carried history.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because someone has been watching me.””
Daniel finally spoke.
His voice was low.
“Claire.””
The woman on the phone went silent.
She recognized him.
“Daniel.””
The way she said his name made my stomach twist.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Pain.
“You knew?”” Daniel asked.
“I knew your father was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me from what?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire,” Daniel said again.
His voice cracked slightly.
A sound I had never heard from him before.
“You need to tell us.””
The woman breathed in.
“Your father discovered the truth three months ago.””
“What truth?”” Emily asked.
Claire ignored her.
“Daniel, your father was terrified.””
Daniel looked confused.
“My father was never terrified.””
“He was at the end.””
That sentence hurt.
Because I knew it was true.
The last time I saw my father, he wasn’t the powerful businessman everyone admired.
He was just a tired old man sitting in the garden, staring at the house he built.
“What did he discover?”” I asked.
Claire whispered:
“That one of his children had been hiding their identity.””
Emily stepped back.
“No.””
The denial came before anyone accused her.
That was what made it strange.
Daniel looked at her.
“Emily?””
She shook her head.
“Don’t look at me.””
“I didn’t say anything.””
“You were thinking it.””
Nobody responded.
Because maybe we all were.
Claire continued.
“Your father believed the person responsible had access to his private medical records.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
The prescription bottle.
The office.
The hidden letter.
Everything connected.
But nothing made sense.
“Was it Daniel?”” Emily asked.
Daniel immediately looked at her.
“What?””
“You were the one with access.””
“I managed his company, not his doctor.””
“But you knew his schedule.””
“So did you.””
Emily’s face changed.
The argument stopped.
Because the truth was obvious.
All of us had pieces.
All of us had reasons.
Claire spoke again.
“You’re looking at the wrong thing.””
We all listened.
“The question is not which child had access.””
“Then what is it?”” I asked.
Her answer came softly.
“Which child had something to lose?””
The call ended.
Just like that.
I stared at the phone.
“Claire?””
Nothing.
I called back.
No answer.
Daniel paced across the room.
“This is insane.””
Emily looked at him.
“Is it?””
He stopped.
“What does that mean?””
She crossed her arms.
“It means Dad kept secrets.””
“So did everyone apparently.””
The accusation hung between us.
I looked at Thomas.
“Did you know about Claire?””
He hesitated.
That was enough.
“You did.””
Thomas sighed.
“I knew her name.””
“You said you knew of her.””
“I didn’t know where she was.””
“But you knew she existed.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
“Because your father told me not to.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“No. Everyone keeps saying Dad wanted this. Dad wanted that. Maybe Dad was just controlling everyone because he didn’t trust anyone.””
“Your father had reasons.””
“Did he?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Because right now, all I see is a dead man leaving behind accusations and confusion.””
The room went quiet.
Then Thomas said something unexpected.
“Your father wasn’t confused.””
Daniel stopped.
“What?””
Thomas opened his briefcase.
He removed a small folder.
“I was instructed to give this to you only if Claire’s name appeared.””
My heart skipped.
“What is it?””
Thomas placed the folder on the table.
“Medical records.””
Daniel stared at them.
“Dad’s?””
“Yes.””
“Why would he hide medical records?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a hospital report.
My father’s name.
His date of birth.
Then a section marked:
*Genetic Testing Results.*
My hands went cold.
“What is this?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father ordered a DNA test.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel reached for the paper.
“Why?””
I looked at the date.
The test had been done two months before his death.
Two months.
My father knew something.
He was searching for an answer.
Emily read over my shoulder.
Then she froze.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“What does it say?””
She didn’t respond.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Emily?””
She stepped away.
“No.””
Daniel grabbed the paper.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then he looked up.
“What?””
The fear in his voice terrified me.
“What does it say?”” I asked again.
Thomas gently took the document.
His eyes scanned the results.
Then he closed them.
Like he already knew.
“Thomas?””
He looked at us.
“The DNA test was not performed to identify a criminal.””
“Then why?””
He placed the paper down.
“It was performed to confirm whether Richard Hale was the biological father of all three of you.””
Nobody moved.
The sentence felt unreal.
Three children.
One father.
A question mark over everything.
Daniel stared at the paper.
“What were the results?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then he answered.
“The test confirmed that Richard was the biological father of two children.””
My chest tightened.
Emily covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at me.
I looked at him.
Then at Emily.
Two children.
Not three.
Someone in our family had been living a lie.
For years.
Thomas slowly turned the page.
“There is another document.””
“What?”” I whispered.
“A letter from Richard.””
“To who?””
Thomas looked down.
His expression changed.
“To the child who would discover the truth.””
The room went silent.
“Read it,” Daniel said.
Thomas unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was my father’s.
His final words.
The words he wrote after learning one of us wasn’t his.
Thomas began reading.
*If you are reading this, then the secret I carried for decades has finally come to light.*
My fingers trembled.
*I need you to understand one thing. Blood does not create family. Love does.*
I felt tears forming.
Then Thomas continued.
*But someone used this secret to threaten my life. Someone believed that if the truth was revealed, they would lose everything.*
He stopped.
A chill moved through the room.
Because we all knew what came next.
Thomas looked at the final paragraph.
And his face changed.
“What?”” I asked.
He slowly lifted his eyes.
“Your father named the child.””
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
Thomas read the final sentence.
And the world seemed to stop.
*The child who is not biologically mine is not the person who betrayed me. The person who betrayed me is the one who knew the truth and tried to hide it.*
Nobody spoke.
Because the real question had changed.
It wasn’t:
*Who wasn’t Richard Hale’s child?*
May you like
It was:
*Who knew the truth first?*
