Chapter 10: The Mother Who Pulled the Trigger

For one impossible moment, I thought Daniel was lying.

Margaret stood beneath the warehouse lights, her beige coat hanging loosely from her shoulders. Her right hand held a small black pistol.

Detective Brooks immediately turned toward her.

“Mrs. Carter, put the weapon down!””

She didn't move.

Her eyes were fixed on me.

“Michael, give me the recording.””

I instinctively moved Ava behind me.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Margaret's expression crumpled.

“I'm not going to hurt you.””

“You're holding a gun!””

“Because nobody listens when I speak!””

Daniel took a step toward her.

“Mom, please. It's over.””

Margaret swung the gun toward him.

“YOU KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!””

Ava screamed.

I dropped to my knees and covered her ears.

Detective Brooks slowly approached Margaret.

“Listen to me. Nobody needs to get hurt.””

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Nobody needed to get hurt forty years ago, either. But look what happened.””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I raised two boys who hated me.””

I stared at her.

“You killed Dad.””

Her hand trembled.

“I didn't mean to.””

“Did you arrange the accident?””

She shook her head.

“Your father was going to destroy everything. He had the documents. He had the recordings. He was going to give you both away.””

“Give us away?””

“To Laura! To Richard! To strangers who would have torn this family apart!””

I stared at her.

“Laura was our mother.””

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“And I was yours.””

“No. You were the woman who stole us.””

She flinched.

For a moment, I thought she might lower the gun.

Instead, she raised it.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed!””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You sacrificed Dad.””

Margaret turned toward him.

“You were supposed to be grateful!””

“I was a child!””

“You had a home! You had food! You had everything!””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I had a mother who lied to me every day!””

Margaret looked at him for a long moment.

Then she whispered something that made my stomach turn.

“I killed your father because he chose you.””

Silence.

Even Richard, lying on the concrete with his injured shoulder, stopped moving.

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Margaret began crying.

“Your father wanted to confess everything. He wanted to tell you that Daniel wasn't his biological son. He wanted to tell you that you weren't his biological son either. He wanted to find Laura and return both children to her.””

“And you couldn't let him?””

“He was going to take my family away!””

“So you killed him?””

She lowered her head.

“I put something in his medication. I thought he would become confused. I thought the doctors would say his heart had failed.””

I felt sick.

“You poisoned him.””

“I didn't know it would kill him.””

Detective Brooks continued approaching.

“Mrs. Carter, put the gun down.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You think arresting me will fix anything?””

“No. But it will stop you from hurting anyone else.””

She looked at Ava.

My daughter was crying silently behind me.

“Michael,” Margaret whispered, “please let me hold her one last time.””

I shook my head.

“You lost that right.””

Her face changed.

She lifted the gun toward me.

A shot exploded.

I threw myself over Ava.

The bullet struck a metal beam behind us.

Detective Brooks tackled Margaret before she could fire again.

The gun skidded across the concrete.

Two officers rushed forward and handcuffed her.

“Margaret Carter, you're under arrest.””

She struggled briefly.

Then she stopped.

As the officers pulled her upright, she looked at me.

“You'll regret this, Michael.””

I held Ava tightly.

“No. I regret believing you.””

An ambulance took Richard Hayes to the hospital under police guard.

Daniel was arrested for kidnapping and his involvement in the conspiracy, although Detective Brooks promised to investigate his cooperation.

Margaret was taken into custody.

I sat in the back of a police vehicle with Ava asleep against my chest.

Her tiny fingers were wrapped around my shirt.

Every few minutes, she stirred.

“Daddy?””

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Is Grandma coming back?””

I swallowed.

“No, baby.””

“Did I do something wrong?””

My heart broke.

I kissed her forehead.

“Absolutely not. None of this was your fault.””

She buried her face against me.

“Mommy told me not to let them take her.””

I closed my eyes.

“You were very brave.””

“I was scared.””

“Being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared.””

She looked up.

“Will Mommy come home?””

I held her tighter.

“Yes. We're going to bring her home.””

At the hospital, Danielle was waiting in a wheelchair.

The moment she saw Ava, she opened her arms.

“Baby!””

Ava ran toward her.

“Mommy!””

Danielle wrapped both arms around her daughter and began crying.

I stood a few feet away, watching them.

For the first time in days, I felt something resembling relief.

Then Danielle looked at me.

“Did you find the recording?””

I nodded.

“Richard has it.””

Her face tightened.

“Did he tell you what's on it?””

“Not yet.””

I sat beside her.

“Margaret confessed to killing Dad.””

Danielle closed her eyes.

“I knew she was involved.””

“She admitted poisoning his medication.””

Danielle reached for my hand.

“Michael, there's something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Before the funeral, Evelyn came to see me.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“The night before I was declared dead.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

Danielle looked at Ava.

Then she lowered her voice.

“She told me that if I didn't cooperate, she would reveal something about Ava's birth.””

I stared at her.

“What exactly?””

Danielle swallowed.

“She said Ava wasn't born at the hospital where I gave birth.””

I went still.

“What?””

“I gave birth at St. Mary's. But the hospital record said Ava had been transferred immediately after delivery.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought Evelyn was lying. But then I found the original delivery records.””

She reached for a folder.

Inside were photocopies of medical documents.

One page showed my wife's admission information.

Another showed the delivery details.

The final page contained a handwritten note.

*INFANT TRANSFERRED TO PRIVATE CARE. BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY DISPUTED.*

I stared at the paper.

“What does this mean?””

Danielle shook her head.

“I don't know.””

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Carter, Detective Brooks is here to speak with you.””

I looked toward the door.

The detective walked in carrying a small evidence bag.

Inside was a photograph.

He placed it on the bedside table.

It showed Margaret standing beside a young woman outside St. Mary's maternity clinic.

The woman was holding a newborn baby.

I recognized the woman immediately.

Laura.

But the baby in her arms wasn't a newborn boy or girl.

It was Ava.

Detective Brooks looked at me.

“We've discovered something else about your daughter's birth.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He opened his notebook.

“According to the original records, Ava was not born to Danielle.””

My wife gasped.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Then the detective delivered the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“Your daughter was adopted before she was even born.””
