Chapter 14: The Recording That Exposed Everyone
The nursery was hidden behind a false wall in the clinic's basement.
Detective Brooks had found the entrance shortly after Margaret was taken into custody.
When he showed us the photograph, Emily immediately recognized the room.
“I've seen this place,” she whispered.
“Where?”” I asked.
“In the original hospital plans. It was listed as a private observation room.””
“Why would a maternity clinic need one?””
Emily shook her head.
“It wasn't part of the maternity ward. It was built specifically for Richard Hayes.””
We followed the officers back to the clinic.
The false wall had been opened.
Behind it was a narrow room containing two old cribs, a metal filing cabinet, and a wooden desk.
Dust covered everything.
Except one drawer.
It had been opened recently.
Detective Brooks pulled it out.
Inside was a small cassette recorder and a stack of medical photographs.
Emily picked up the recorder.
“That's my father's handwriting.””
She examined the label.
*RICHARD HAYES — PRIVATE CONFESSION.*
I stared at her.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“Richard was my biological father too. I was born from the same genetic material as Danielle, but the hospital records were changed.””
Danielle looked at her sister.
“Did he know about you?””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know. But I intend to find out.””
Detective Brooks placed the recorder on the desk.
“Let's hear it.””
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice emerged.
Richard Hayes.
If this recording is being played, then the arrangement has failed.
A chair scraped in the background.
I want it understood that I never intended to hurt the children. Evelyn was supposed to arrange everything quietly.
Another voice interrupted.
Evelyn.
You promised me the girl.
Richard answered sharply.
I promised you an heir. I never promised you a child.
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
Evelyn spoke again.
Margaret is already asking questions.
Richard laughed.
Margaret is easily controlled. She believes the children belong to her because she gave birth to one of them.
Danielle covered her mouth.
Then came a sentence that made everyone freeze.
Richard said:
The real problem is Thomas. He knows the embryos were never legally authorized.
My father's name.
I leaned closer.
The recording continued.
He has the original genetic files. If he exposes them, the entire Hayes family fortune could be frozen.
Evelyn's voice became colder.
Then remove him.
Silence.
Then Richard answered.
I already arranged it.
I closed my eyes.
My father hadn't died in an accident.
He had been murdered because he discovered the truth.
But the recording wasn't finished.
A third voice appeared.
A woman.
Margaret.
What about Michael and Daniel?
Richard answered:
Michael is Thomas's son. Daniel is mine. Neither boy knows the truth.
Margaret whispered:
And the girls?
Richard laughed.
The girls are the future.
The recording ended with a loud click.
Nobody moved.
Detective Brooks slowly turned off the machine.
“That is substantial evidence.””
Emily stared at the recorder.
“My father knew exactly what he was doing.””
Danielle shook her head.
“He treated us like property.””
I looked toward the doorway.
“Where is Richard now?””
Detective Brooks checked his phone.
“He's being held at the hospital under police guard. His injury is minor, but we're preparing charges.””
“Then let's ask him about the original genetic files.””
Richard was waiting in a private hospital room.
His injured shoulder was bandaged.
Two officers stood outside.
When I entered, he smiled.
“Michael. I wondered when you'd come.””
I placed the cassette recorder on his bedside table.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your nursery.””
He stared at the recorder.
Then at Emily.
For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
“Emily?””
She stepped forward.
“Hello, Father.””
Richard looked away.
“You shouldn't be here.””
“I've spent my entire life in the same hospital where you erased my identity.””
He said nothing.
Danielle approached the bed.
“Why did you do it?””
Richard sighed.
“You wouldn't understand.””
“Try me.””
He looked at her.
“Your mother was young. She had no resources. I wanted to make sure my children had a future.””
Laura, standing behind us, stepped forward.
“You stole my children.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“I provided for them.””
“You told me they were dead!””
“I made a decision.””
Laura slapped him.
The officers moved forward, but Detective Brooks raised a hand.
“Let her speak.””
Laura's voice shook.
“You took forty years from me. You made me bury children who were alive. You watched me grow old believing I had failed them.””
Richard looked down.
For the first time, he had no answer.
I stepped closer.
“You killed my father.””
Richard looked up.
“Thomas was a fool.””
“He raised me.””
“He wasn't your biological father.””
“He was my father.””
Richard laughed softly.
“Blood is what matters.””
I shook my head.
“No. It isn't.””
I pointed toward the door.
“Those two little girls outside have spent their entire lives surrounded by people who believed blood gave them ownership. But they don't belong to you.””
Richard's face darkened.
“They are my heirs.””
“They're children.””
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
“Richard Hayes, you're under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, unlawful medical experimentation, and suspected involvement in the murder of Thomas Carter.””
Richard began shouting.
“You can't arrest me! My family owns half this city!””
Brooks placed the handcuffs around his wrists.
“Not anymore.””
Two hours later, Laura received a phone call from the police laboratory.
The original genetic records had been recovered from the clinic.
But there was an unexpected discovery.
A sealed envelope had been attached to the back of one of the files.
It contained a handwritten letter from Thomas.
Laura opened it.
To the people who finally find the truth,
I want you to know that none of the children are responsible for what we adults have done.
Michael is my son because I raised him.
Daniel is my son because I loved him.
Danielle and Emily are my daughters because I promised Laura I would protect them.
And Ava and Lily are my grandchildren because they deserve a family that loves them without conditions.
Laura began crying.
I took the letter.
At the bottom, my father had added one final paragraph.
There is one more person you must find.
I frowned.
“Who?””
Laura turned the page.
A name was written there.
*SARAH HAYES.*
Emily looked up sharply.
“My father's first wife.””
I stared.
“Wasn't she dead?””
Emily shook her head.
“No. She disappeared when I was a baby.””
Laura looked at the letter again.
Beneath the name was an address.
And a warning.
She knows who really ordered the switch.
That night, Danielle and I returned to our house with Ava and Lily.
The girls fell asleep together in Ava's bedroom.
For the first time, they weren't separated by locked doors, false names, or hidden records.
Danielle sat beside me in the living room.
She held my father's letter.
“I wish we could have known him longer.””
I kissed her forehead.
“He would have loved these girls.””
She nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Michael, what happens to us now?””
I took a long breath.
“We rebuild.””
She looked down.
“And our marriage?””
I couldn't answer immediately.
The truth about our biological relationship had changed everything.
We had shared a life without knowing what we were.
But we could not pretend the discovery hadn't happened.
I took her hand.
“We'll face it honestly. We'll put Ava and Lily first. We'll figure out the rest with time.””
She leaned against me.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
*YOU FOUND RICHARD. GOOD. BUT HE WAS NEVER THE ONE WHO STARTED THIS.*
A second message appeared.
*ASK SARAH WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT THE TWINS WERE BORN.*
Then came a photograph.
A young woman stood beside Thomas Carter outside the clinic.
Behind them was a third person.
A man wearing a police uniform.
I recognized him immediately.
Detective Samuel Brooks.
I stared at the photograph.
The date was forty years old.
May you like
And beneath it was a handwritten message.
*THE MAN INVESTIGATING YOUR FAMILY HAS BEEN HIDING HIS OWN SECRET.*
