Chapter 5: My Wife Was My Missing Sister
I pulled the car to the side of the road.
For several seconds, I simply stared through the windshield.
The traffic lights changed.
Cars passed.
Somewhere nearby, a horn blared.
But all I could hear was the woman's voice.
“Michael? Are you still there?””
I swallowed.
“What did you just say?””
“Danielle is your sister.””
“No.””
“I know this is difficult.””
“No, you're mistaken.””
Laura began crying.
“I wish I were.””
I pressed my palm against my forehead.
“Danielle and I are married. We have a daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then how can you say something like that?””
“Because I have spent forty years searching for both of you.””
My breathing became shallow.
“Both of us?””
Laura explained that she had given birth to twins at a private maternity clinic forty years earlier.
A boy and a girl.
She had been told her son died shortly after birth.
Her daughter, she was told, had been placed in temporary care because of medical complications.
Laura had signed papers believing the children would be returned to her once she recovered.
But they never came.
Instead, she received a letter stating that both babies had died.
“Who told you that?”” I asked.
“Dr. Richard Hayes.””
My stomach tightened.
The same doctor who had signed Danielle's death certificate.
Laura continued.
“I didn't believe him. I went back to the clinic. But the records had disappeared. Evelyn told me your father had paid me to stay away.””
“Evelyn?””
“She was working with Margaret. She told everyone she was protecting the children.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
“I did. Several times. But I had no money, no lawyer, and no proof. Eventually, I left town.””
Her voice cracked.
“I never stopped looking.””
I thought of Danielle.
Her smile.
Her hands.
The way she had held Ava after nightmares.
Our wedding.
Our anniversary.
Every memory came crashing down.
“Where is Danielle now?”” I whispered.
“At the hospital, I hope.””
“How do you know?””
“Because she called me yesterday.””
I stared at the dashboard.
“Yesterday?””
“Yes. She told me Evelyn had discovered the truth.””
I remembered Danielle's words.
She knows everything.
I suddenly understood why she had been so terrified.
But something still didn't make sense.
“Why did Danielle marry me?””
Laura went silent.
Then she answered.
“She didn't know you were her brother.””
I gripped the phone.
“Neither did I.””
“I know. Your identities were changed. The birth records were falsified.
You grew up with different surnames. Danielle was told her parents had died when she was very young.””
I felt physically sick.
“Where was she raised?””
“By Evelyn.””
My mother-in-law.
The woman who had helped steal both children from their mother.
The woman who had raised Danielle while knowing exactly who she was.
I ended the call without saying goodbye.
Not because I didn't want to hear more.
Because I couldn't bear another word.
When I arrived at the hospital, Detective Brooks was waiting outside Danielle's room.
His expression told me something was wrong.
“What happened?””
“Your wife has been asking for you.””
“Then let me see her.””
He stepped aside.
I entered.
Danielle was sitting upright, her face pale but her eyes alert.
Ava sat beside her, holding her hand.
The moment she saw me, Danielle whispered, “Did you speak to Laura?””
I stopped.
“How do you know about Laura?””
Danielle closed her eyes.
“She called you.””
I nodded.
“Danielle, tell me the truth.””
Ava looked between us.
“Daddy?””
I approached the bed.
“Sweetheart, can you go sit with Uncle Daniel for a few minutes?””
Ava hesitated.
“Is Mommy going to be okay?””
Danielle kissed her forehead.
“I'm going to be okay, baby.””
Daniel took Ava into the hallway.
I closed the door.
Then I turned back.
“Are we brother and sister?””
Danielle's face crumpled.
“Yes.””
I sat down.
The room became painfully quiet.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“Not when we met. Not when we married. Not when Ava was born.””
“Then when?””
“Three weeks ago.””
I looked at her.
“Three weeks?””
Danielle nodded.
“Evelyn came to the house while you were at work. She brought a box of old photographs. She told me she wanted to discuss your father's estate.””
She reached toward the bedside table.
There was a small photograph resting beside her water glass.
It showed two newborn babies lying together in a hospital cot.
On the back were their names.
Michael Bennett.
Danielle Bennett.
“I found it inside the box,” she whispered.
“I thought it was a coincidence until I saw the hospital records.””
I looked at the photograph.
Two tiny babies.
One boy.
One girl.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried calling you. Your mother answered.””
My stomach tightened.
“Margaret?””
Danielle nodded.
“She told me if I said another word, she'd make sure Ava disappeared.””
I stood abruptly.
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of Evelyn?””
“Of everyone.””
She began crying.
“Michael, you don't understand. Evelyn has people everywhere. She knew the doctor.
She knew the hospital administrators. She knew the funeral director. She even knew which officer would take the initial report.””
I stared at her.
“Did she try to kill you?””
Danielle looked down.
“I found documents showing that your father's death wasn't an accident.””
I remembered Margaret's confession.
Your father didn't die naturally.
“What happened to Dad?””
Danielle took a shaky breath.
“He discovered the adoption records had been falsified. He was going to expose everything.””
“And Evelyn?””
“She threatened him.””
I gripped the edge of the bed.
“Why did you marry me?””
Danielle looked up, tears running down her cheeks.
“Because I loved you, Michael. I didn't know. I swear I didn't know.””
I looked away.
The woman I had loved for seven years was suddenly connected to me by a truth neither of us had known.
I couldn't process it.
Then Danielle reached for my hand.
“There's one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Evelyn didn't just want the inheritance.””
She pointed toward the hospital bracelet Detective Brooks had brought in.
“She wanted something your father hid inside the trust.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
My mind went back to the wooden box.
The digital recorder.
“There's already a recording.””
Danielle shook her head.
“No. Your father made another one. A longer recording. He gave it to Laura before he died.””
“Where is it?””
She looked toward the door.
“Evelyn has it now.””
A sudden knock interrupted us.
Detective Brooks entered.
“Michael, I need you to come outside.””
“What happened?””
He held up his phone.
“We received a report from your brother's house.””
My stomach tightened.
“Is Ava okay?””
“She is physically safe.””
“Then what's wrong?””
Detective Brooks hesitated.
“Your mother has disappeared.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“She left before the officers could question her. But she left something behind.””
He showed me a photograph.
It was a handwritten note on Daniel's kitchen table.
I know what Evelyn is planning. I'm going to stop her.
Beneath the message was an address.
An abandoned maternity clinic outside town.
May you like
And beside the address were four words written in red ink.
*WHERE YOUR SISTER WAS BORN.*
