Chapter 3 - THE SON WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXISTEthan stared at the photograph for almost ten minutes.

He did not move.

He did not breathe normally.

He simply stood inside his father’s office, holding a picture that seemed to rewrite his entire life.

The boy in the photograph looked like him.

Not similar.

Not close.

Almost identical.

Same dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same small scar above the eyebrow.

A scar Ethan got when he fell from his bicycle at the age of eight.

A scar his mother always kissed whenever he complained about it.

But that was impossible.

The photograph was dated twelve years earlier.

Before Ethan was old enough to remember.

Before his mother disappeared.

Before everything changed.

His hands tightened around the picture.

“Who are you?”

The question echoed through the empty office.

But nobody answered.

Because the person who had the answer was the person who had lied to him his entire life.

His father.

Michael Walker.

The next morning, Ethan returned to the hospital.

Claire immediately noticed something was wrong.

“What happened?”

Ethan placed the photograph on the table.

Her face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

And that scared him more.

“You know him.”

Claire looked away.

“Ethan…”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

But firm.

“Not anymore.”

Claire looked at her son.

“What do you mean?”

“I spent my entire life believing you were dead.”

A pause.

“I spent three days believing you were dead.”

His eyes filled.

“And now I find out my father may have replaced me?”

Claire closed her eyes.

Because she knew this moment would come.

The truth always did.

Even when people tried to bury it.

Especially then.

“The boy in the picture…”

Ethan pointed.

“Who is he?”

Claire remained silent.

“Mom.”

Finally, she whispered:

“His name is Noah.”

Ethan froze.

“Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Who is Noah Walker?”

Claire looked at him.

“That is the question everyone wanted you to never ask.”

Twelve years earlier.

Before Ethan knew anything about the family business.

Before he understood money.

Before he understood power.

The Walker family was already fighting a quiet war.

Michael’s father, Charles Walker, built the family fortune.

But he knew his son.

He knew Michael was ambitious.

Too ambitious.

Charles believed Michael cared more about winning than protecting people.

So when Ethan was born, Charles made a decision.

The inheritance would not belong to Michael.

It would belong to Ethan.

Protected.

Untouchable.

Until Ethan was old enough.

Michael hated that.

Because it meant he could control everything except the one thing he wanted most.

The money.

The company.

The legacy.

Then Noah appeared.

Ethan looked confused.

“Who is Noah?”

Claire took a deep breath.

“Michael had another child.”

The room went silent.

Ethan felt like the air disappeared.

“My father had another son?”

Claire nodded.

“Before you were born.”

Ethan looked at the picture again.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because Noah was part of Michael’s first plan.”

“What plan?”

Claire looked at him.

“To replace you.”

The words were impossible.

But somehow, after everything Ethan had discovered…

they sounded believable.

Claire continued.

“Michael believed if something happened to you, Noah could become the heir.”

Ethan stared.

“He wanted me gone?”

“Yes.”

“Since I was a child?”

Claire nodded.

“And when your grandfather changed the inheritance documents, Michael realized Noah was no longer useful.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“So he abandoned him.”

“Yes.”

“Like he tried to abandon me.”

Claire looked down.

“Yes.”

Ethan sat silently.

The man he once admired.

The man everyone called brilliant.

The man who built an empire.

Had spent years treating people like pieces on a chessboard.

Including his own children.

Then Ethan remembered something.

A sentence Michael said in the cemetery.

You were never supposed to find her.

Not:

“You were never supposed to open the coffin.”

Not:

“You were never supposed to know she was alive.”

He said:

Find her.

Because Michael knew Claire was hidden.

And maybe Noah knew too.

That afternoon, Ethan and Claire met with Robert Hayes.

The lawyer looked exhausted.

Like he had carried this secret for years.

Ethan placed the photograph on the table.

“Tell me everything.”

Robert looked at Claire.

Then Ethan.

“Are you sure?”

Ethan nodded.

“I already lost my family once.”

He looked at the picture.

“I’m not losing the truth too.”

Robert sighed.

“Michael created a second identity for Noah.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted an insurance policy.”

Ethan frowned.

“An insurance policy?”

“If Ethan disappeared, Noah would take his place.”

Claire added:

“But when Ethan survived, Michael changed the plan.”

Robert nodded.

“He decided removing Ethan was easier than replacing him.”

Silence.

Then Robert revealed something worse.

“Noah is still alive.”

Ethan looked up.

“What?”

“He has been living under another name.”

“Where?”

Robert hesitated.

“That is the problem.”

“What?”

“Nobody knows.”

Ethan stared.

“Then why tell me?”

Robert opened another file.

Inside were bank transfers.

Medical records.

Private payments.

All connected to one person.

Michael Walker.

“He has been paying someone.”

Ethan looked closer.

A name appeared.

Daniel Reed.

Claire’s face changed.

“No.”

Ethan noticed.

“You know him?”

Claire looked terrified.

“He was the doctor who signed my death report.”

The room became silent.

That night, Ethan received a message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

You found the coffin. Now find the grave.

Attached was an address.

An abandoned property outside the city.

Ethan showed Claire.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“Mom?”

“Do not go there.”

“Why?”

Because for the first time since Ethan found her alive…

Claire looked afraid for herself.

Not for the past.

For the present.

“That place…”

She whispered.

“Is where Michael kept his secrets.”

Ethan went anyway.

Because he finally understood something.

Every time someone told him not to look…

there was something waiting for him to find.

The abandoned property was hidden behind an old iron gate.

No lights.

No cameras.

Nothing.

But inside the house, Ethan found something impossible.

A bedroom.

A child’s bedroom.

Photos on the wall.

Clothes in the closet.

School records.

Everything belonging to a child.

Not Ethan.

Noah.

On the desk was a notebook.

The first page contained one sentence.

Written in a child’s handwriting:

Dad told me Ethan took my life away.

Ethan froze.

He turned the page.

The next sentence made his blood run cold.

But Dad lied.

Another page.

Ethan was never my enemy.

Another.

Dad was.

Ethan stopped.

Because the notebook was not written by Michael.

Not by Claire.

Not by a stranger.

It was written by Noah.

The boy everyone thought was a weapon.

The boy Michael tried to use.

And the final page contained a message:

If Ethan finds this, tell him I tried to warn him.

Below it was one more line.

A location.

A place Ethan recognized.

The Walker family vault.

Ethan closed the notebook.

His phone rang.

Claire.

“Where are you?”

He looked around the abandoned room.

“I found Noah.”

Silence.

Then Claire whispered:

“Ethan…”

“What?”

“He was never the replacement.”

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Claire’s voice shook.

“He was the first victim.”

A pause.

“And your father…”

“What?”

“He didn’t create Noah to replace you.”

Ethan waited.

“He created Noah because he needed someone else to blame.”

The call ended.

Ethan stood alone.

Holding a dead boy’s secrets.

Except Noah was not dead.

And somewhere inside the Walker family vault…

was the truth about why two sons had been forced into a war neither of them started.
