Chapter 4: The Family She Destroyed
Arthur spent the next hour sitting in his office without turning on the lights.
The mansion was quiet.
Too quiet.
Usually, quiet meant peace.
Tonight, it felt like the silence before a storm.
A photograph sat on his desk.
Arthur, his late son Michael, and a younger Leo.
Michael was smiling in the picture.
That was what bothered Arthur most.
His son had always been able to make people feel safe.
Even Arthur.
Especially Arthur.
Michael had been the one person who could tell him when he was wrong.
“You work too much, Dad.””
“You think money fixes everything.””
“You can’t protect people by controlling every outcome.””
Arthur had hated hearing those words.
Because they were usually true.
Now Michael was gone.
And Arthur wondered how many signs he had missed.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in.””
The maid stepped inside.
She looked nervous.
Arthur motioned for her to sit.
“You did the right thing.””
The woman shook her head.
“I should have spoken sooner.””
Arthur looked at her.
“Why didn’t you?””
She looked down.
“Because I needed the job.””
There was no anger in her voice.
Just honesty.
Arthur respected that.
People loved to talk about courage when they had nothing to lose.
But real life was complicated.
Fear changed people.
Survival changed people.
“What was Michael like?”” Arthur asked.
The question surprised her.
She looked up.
“Mr. Michael?””
Arthur nodded.
She smiled faintly.
“He loved Leo.””
Arthur looked at the photograph.
“I know.””
“No,” she said softly.
Arthur looked back at her.
The maid shook her head.
“He really loved him.””
Her voice became emotional.
“After his wife died, he changed. He became softer. He would sit with Leo for hours.
Read books. Make breakfast. He said he never wanted his son to feel alone.””
Arthur swallowed.
“And then?””
The maid hesitated.
“Then Victoria came.””
The room became still.
“She changed things?””
The maid nodded.
“At first, everyone thought she was helping. She was organized. Elegant. She handled everything.””
Arthur leaned back.
“But?””
“But she didn’t like losing control.””
The maid looked toward the closed office door.
“She started making decisions for everyone.””
Arthur already knew.
He had seen it.
Victoria had not entered the family as someone who wanted to belong.
She entered like someone who wanted ownership.
“What about Michael?”” Arthur asked.
The maid looked away.
“That’s the part I don’t understand.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?””
“Before he died, he was worried.””
Arthur froze.
“Worried about what?””
The maid’s hands twisted together.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Tell me what you do know.””
She took a breath.
“One night, I heard him arguing with Victoria.””
Arthur leaned forward.
“About?””
“The family.””
“That’s not specific.””
“No.””
She looked frightened again.
“He said something like… ‘You’re changing my home into something I don’t recognize.’”
Arthur felt a chill.
“When was this?””
“Two days before the accident.””
The word sat heavily between them.
Accident.
Arthur had accepted that word for years.
Michael’s death had been ruled an accident.
A tragic moment.
A loss nobody could undo.
But now?
Now there were questions.
And Arthur hated questions without answers.
The office door opened.
One of the security men entered.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Arthur stood.
“Yes?””
“We checked the camera system.””
“And?””
The man hesitated.
“There’s more footage.””
Arthur’s expression changed.
“From the garage?””
“No.””
The security man looked serious.
“From other parts of the house.””
The room went cold.
Arthur understood immediately.
The garage was not the only place Victoria had been careless.
“How much?””
“Months.””
Arthur looked toward the hallway.
Toward where Leo was sleeping.
A child who had been trapped in a house full of secrets.
“Show me.””
The security man nodded.
Then stopped.
“There’s something else.””
Arthur looked at him.
“What?””
The man lowered his voice.
“Some files were deleted.””
Arthur’s eyes hardened.
“Can they be recovered?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“A few hours.””
Arthur walked toward the door.
The calm on his face had returned.
But this time, it was different.
This was not the calm of a businessman.
This was the calm of a man who had discovered someone hurt his family.
“Recover everything.””
The security man nodded.
Arthur stopped before leaving.
“And nobody tells Victoria.””
Because now Arthur knew one thing.
She had not just been hiding what she did to Leo.
She had been hiding something much bigger.
And if the missing footage revealed what he feared…
May you like
Victoria would not just lose control of the mansion.
She would lose control of the truth.
