Chapter 5: The Files She Tried to Erase

Arthur did not sleep that night.

He sat in the security room of his mansion, watching numbers move across computer screens while his entire world slowly rearranged itself.

The room was cold.

The lights were low.

The only sound was the quiet hum of machines searching through months of hidden memories.

Arthur had spent his life building systems.

Systems for his businesses.

Systems for his properties.

Systems for protecting what belonged to him.

But no system could protect a family member from someone living under the same roof.

That was the part he could not forgive.

Not Victoria.

Not himself.

The security technician sat at the desk, working through the recovered files.

“We found something,” he said.

Arthur stood immediately.

“What?””

The technician turned the monitor.

“Someone tried to remove footage from the upstairs hallway cameras.””

Arthur stared at the screen.

“Can you restore it?””

“We already did.””

The video appeared.

A hallway.

Three months earlier.

Arthur watched as Leo walked slowly toward the kitchen.

The boy looked smaller than he remembered.

Then Victoria appeared.

She stopped him.

The audio was unclear at first.

The technician adjusted it.

Victoria’s voice filled the room.

“You need to understand something, Leo. Your grandfather cannot always save you.””

Arthur’s face hardened.

The boy looked down.

“I miss Grandpa.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“You need to stop depending on him.””

Arthur felt his hands curl into fists.

That sentence bothered him more than the punishment in the garage.

Because it revealed the truth.

Victoria was not just being cruel.

She was trying to separate Leo from the person who made him feel safe.

The footage continued.

Leo asked something.

The audio caught only part of it.

“...Daddy?””

Arthur froze.

His eyes moved toward the screen.

Victoria answered.

“Your father is gone.””

Leo lowered his head.

“I know.””

The boy’s voice was almost impossible to hear.

“But Grandpa said Daddy loved me.””

Arthur looked away.

For a moment, he could not watch.

Michael.

Even after death, his son was still protecting his child.

Victoria leaned closer to Leo.

“Your grandfather tells you things because he feels guilty.””

Arthur looked back.

“What?””

The technician paused the footage.

Arthur stared.

“Play that again.””

The words repeated.

“Your grandfather tells you things because he feels guilty.””

Arthur stood completely still.

Guilty.

That was what Victoria had been feeding into Leo’s mind.

Trying to poison the bond between them.

Trying to make a child question the one person fighting for him.

The technician opened another file.

“This one was almost completely deleted.””

The screen changed.

A private conversation.

Victoria.

And a man Arthur did not recognize.

They were in the mansion’s study.

The date was two months after Michael’s death.

Arthur watched silently.

Victoria was speaking.

“He is getting suspicious.””

The man leaned back.

“Arthur?””

“Yes.””

“You said he trusted you.””

“He did.””

“Then keep him comfortable.””

Arthur narrowed his eyes.

The man’s face was partly hidden.

“Who is that?”” he asked.

The technician zoomed in.

“Still working on identification.””

The conversation continued.

Victoria lowered her voice.

“If Arthur finds out everything, I lose everything.””

The man smiled.

“Then make sure he doesn’t find out.””

The video ended.

Arthur stared at the blank screen.

Everything inside him felt heavy.

This was no longer about a child being mistreated.

This was about a plan.

A secret.

Something Victoria had been protecting.

“Find out who that man is,” Arthur said.

The technician nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

Arthur walked out of the security room.

He needed to see Leo.

Not because he needed comfort.

Because Leo needed to know someone believed him.

He found the boy asleep in the guest bedroom.

A security guard sat outside.

Arthur stepped inside quietly.

Leo was curled under the blanket, holding the toy truck from the garage.

Arthur sat beside him.

For a while, he just watched.

He remembered Michael at this age.

The same curious eyes.

The same stubborn little personality.

Arthur had spent years teaching Michael how to be strong.

But Michael had taught him something more important.

How to be gentle.

A small voice interrupted his thoughts.

“Grandpa?””

Arthur looked down.

Leo’s eyes were open.

“You awake?””

Leo nodded.

“Are you mad at me?””

Arthur felt his heart ache.

“No.””

“But Victoria said…”

He stopped.

Arthur waited.

“What did she say?””

Leo looked scared.

“That I make people angry.””

Arthur leaned closer.

“Leo.””

The boy looked at him.

“You never make me angry.””

“Even when I mess up?””

“Especially then.””

Leo looked confused.

“Why?””

Arthur smiled sadly.

“Because you’re a kid. Your job is to learn. My job is to protect you.””

Leo was quiet.

Then he whispered:

“Can I stay with you?””

Arthur did not hesitate.

“Yes.””

The answer came before he even thought about it.

“Yes, you can.””

But as Arthur sat beside him, he knew this was only the beginning.

Because someone had spent months trying to break this child.

And Arthur was going to find out why.
