Chapter 8: The House Divided

By the time Arthur returned to the main part of the mansion, everyone could feel the change.

The staff avoided eye contact.

Security moved differently.

The house no longer belonged to Victoria.

She knew it.

Arthur found her in the living room.

She was standing near the window, looking out over the property.

For years, she had looked at that view like it belonged to her.

Now she looked like someone wondering how much longer she would be allowed to stay.

“You know,” she said without turning around, “I always hated that about you.””

Arthur stopped.

“What?””

“You never raised your voice.””

She turned.

“You just waited.””

Arthur said nothing.

“You waited until people showed you who they really were.””

Her expression was tired now.

Not innocent.

Just tired.

Arthur looked at her.

“You knew Daniel.””

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Before Michael died.””

The honesty surprised him.

“Why?””

She laughed quietly.

“Because I was scared.””

Arthur stared.

“Of what?””

“Losing everything.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“You already had everything.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“I had a name. A house. A lifestyle.””

She pointed around.

“But none of it was mine.””

Arthur understood then.

Victoria had spent years chasing something she could never feel.

Belonging.

But instead of building a family, she tried to control one.

“You helped Daniel steal from us.””

Victoria looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

She looked up.

“Those weren’t mistakes.””

His voice hardened.

“Those were choices.””

The words landed.

Victoria sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked older.

“You think I wanted Michael dead?””

Arthur did not answer.

Because he did not know.

And that uncertainty bothered him.

Victoria noticed.

“He was going to expose everything.””

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“Everything?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel had debts. He was desperate.””

“And you?””

Victoria looked at him.

“I was trapped.””

Arthur almost laughed.

“Trapped?””

She looked angry again.

“There’s a difference between being rich and being free.””

Arthur stared.

“You hurt a child because you felt powerless?””

Victoria’s face changed.

A moment of shame.

Then gone.

“I lost control.””

“No.””

Arthur shook his head.

“You enjoyed having it.””

Silence.

Then a small voice came from the hallway.

“Grandpa?””

Arthur turned.

Leo stood there.

He looked nervous.

Arthur immediately softened.

“Hey.””

Leo walked closer.

“Are you leaving?””

Arthur frowned.

“No.””

“Are you going away like Daddy?””

The question stopped him.

Arthur knelt.

“No, Leo.””

The boy’s eyes filled.

“Everybody leaves.””

Arthur pulled him close.

“I’m not leaving.””

Behind them, Victoria watched.

And for the first time, Arthur saw something complicated in her expression.

Not cruelty.

Not anger.

Regret.

But regret was not enough.

Not anymore.

A security guard entered.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Arthur stood.

“Yes?””

“We found Daniel Cross.””

Victoria looked up immediately.

Arthur noticed.

“Where?””

The guard hesitated.

“He’s been staying at a property owned through one of Victoria’s accounts.””

The room went silent.

Arthur looked at Victoria.

She looked away.

The answer was obvious.

“You knew where he was.””

Victoria whispered.

“I didn’t know he would run.””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“You helped him disappear.””

“I was trying to protect myself.””

Arthur looked at Leo.

Then back at her.

“That’s always been your problem.””

Victoria’s eyes met his.

“What?””

“You protected yourself.””

Arthur’s voice lowered.

“And nobody else.””

The guard handed Arthur a file.

“Mr. Whitmore, there’s one more thing.””

Arthur opened it.

Inside was a report from the night Michael died.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

A witness statement.

Someone had seen another vehicle near the accident scene.

A vehicle registered to Daniel Cross.

Arthur looked up.

The mystery was no longer buried.

It was standing in front of him.

Victoria.

Daniel.

Michael’s death.

Leo’s suffering.

Everything was connected.

Arthur closed the file.

“Bring Daniel to me.””

The guard nodded.

Victoria stood.

“Arthur.””

He looked at her.

For a second, she looked like she wanted to say something human.

Something real.

But whatever it was disappeared.

Arthur walked away.

Because forgiveness was something people earned.

And the truth was something everyone deserved.

May you like

Especially Michael.

Especially Leo.
