Chapter 6: The General Who Died Twice
The photograph on the screen refused to disappear.
Malik stared at it.
A dead man.
A military uniform.
An identification tag.
A name he recognized.
*Marcus Hale.*
The same name belonging to the man standing only a few feet away.
The same man who had commanded armies.
The same man who had received medals.
The same man who had looked him in the eyes and ordered him to trust him.
Yet the document claimed he had died twenty-eight years ago.
Nobody spoke.
Even the alarms had stopped.
The entrance that had been filled with flashing lights and warning sounds was now strangely quiet.
The silence felt heavier than any noise.
General Hale stepped toward the monitor.
His face was pale.
“No.””
It was barely a whisper.
Not a command.
Not a denial.
A man trying to convince himself.
“No.””
He looked at the report again.
“That's not possible.””
Commander Elias Vale stood outside the barrier, watching him.
“You knew this day would come.””
Hale turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
Vale’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew someone would find out.””
“Elias.””
“You knew the truth would eventually reach this base.””
Hale’s voice became colder.
“Stop.””
But Vale didn’t.
“You spent twenty-eight years wearing his name.””
Malik looked at Hale.
The words struck him.
Wearing his name.
Not living his life.
Not earning his legacy.
Wearing it.
Sergeant Brooks looked between them.
“General…”
Hale didn’t respond.
Brooks stepped closer.
“Sir, I need an explanation.””
Hale closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he looked exhausted.
Older than his years.
Finally, he spoke.
“Twenty-eight years ago, I was part of a mission that was classified before it even began.””
Malik listened carefully.
“Project Nightfall.””
Hale nodded.
“Yes.””
“What was the objective?””
Hale looked toward Vale.
“To recover stolen intelligence.””
Vale laughed bitterly.
“That’s what they told us.””
Hale ignored him.
“The truth was that Nightfall wasn’t about stolen information.””
Malik frowned.
“Then what was it about?””
Hale looked at the screen.
“At the time, military intelligence believed an enemy organization had developed a way to manipulate identity systems.””
Brooks crossed her arms.
“Identity systems?””
Hale nodded.
“Biometric records. Facial recognition. Voice authentication. Personal histories.””
Malik glanced at the second general.
The copy.
The man standing silently nearby.
“You mean creating someone who could pass as another person.””
Hale didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Brooks looked at the second general.
“And him?””
The second general stared at the ground.
For the first time since Malik saw him, he looked lost.
Not like a powerful officer.
Like someone whose entire existence had just collapsed.
“I have memories,” he said quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
“I have twenty-eight years of memories.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“I remember my mother teaching me how to read.””
Silence.
“I remember my father taking me fishing.””
He looked toward the original Hale.
“I remember becoming a soldier.””
The man swallowed.
“If those memories aren’t real…”
Nobody answered.
Malik felt something tighten in his chest.
Because that was the question nobody wanted to face.
Even if someone was created artificially…
Did that make their life fake?
The second general looked at Marcus Hale.
“Are you telling me I never existed?””
Hale looked at him.
And for a moment, the general didn’t look like an enemy.
He looked like a father.
“No.””
The second general froze.
Hale continued.
“You existed.””
“Then what am I?””
Hale struggled to answer.
Finally:
“I don’t know.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Outside the barrier, Vale watched silently.
Then he said:
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said in years.””
Hale looked at him.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I was there.””
“You weren’t there for everything.””
Vale stepped closer.
“Neither were you.””
The tension between them grew.
Malik looked at the report again.
There was something missing.
A gap.
A question.
“If the original Marcus Hale died…”
Everyone looked at him.
Malik pointed at the screen.
“Then who has been standing here all these years?””
Nobody answered.
The second general looked at the original Hale.
The original Hale looked away.
And that scared Malik more than anything.
Because it meant the answer mattered.
Finally, Adrian’s voice came through the phone again.
“You want the truth, Private Carter?””
Everyone turned.
The call was still active.
Malik grabbed the receiver.
“Yes.””
“Then ask him the right question.””
Malik frowned.
“What question?””
A pause.
Then:
“Ask Marcus Hale what happened after he woke up.””
The line went silent.
Malik slowly lowered the phone.
He looked at the general.
“What happened after you woke up?””
Hale didn’t move.
Brooks noticed.
“General?””
The man’s hands tightened.
“I don’t remember everything.””
The second general looked at him.
“What?””
Hale looked away.
“I remember the mission.””
He paused.
“I remember the bunker.””
Vale’s face changed.
“You remember?””
Hale nodded slowly.
“I remember the explosion.””
The entrance became silent.
“I remember the fire.””
His voice lowered.
“I remember waking up.””
Malik stared.
“Where?””
Hale looked at him.
“In a hospital.””
Brooks frowned.
“Military hospital?””
Hale shook his head.
“No.””
“Then where?””
Hale didn’t answer immediately.
Finally:
“A private facility.””
The second general stepped forward.
“Who brought you there?””
Hale looked at him.
And the second general already knew.
“No.””
Hale whispered:
“Adrian.””
The name landed like a weight.
Malik looked at the phone.
Dr. Adrian Hale.
The man behind everything.
“The person who created him…”
He looked at the second general.
“…saved you?””
Hale nodded.
“Yes.””
Brooks looked confused.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vale spoke.
“Because Adrian Hale didn’t want Marcus dead.””
Everyone turned.
Vale continued.
“He wanted Marcus replaced.””
The second general’s face changed.
“You’re saying…”
Vale looked at him.
“Yes.””
“You weren’t created to protect him.””
A pause.
“You were created to become him.””
The second general stepped back.
“No.””
Vale continued.
“Your memories. Your personality. Your military history.””
He pointed toward the original Hale.
“All of it was designed so nobody would ever know the difference.””
The second general looked at his hands.
The hands of a man who had spent decades believing they belonged to him.
“Why would Adrian do that?””
Hale answered quietly.
“Because he needed a soldier.””
Malik turned.
“A soldier?””
Hale nodded.
“A perfect one.””
The words made everyone uncomfortable.
A person without hesitation.
Without doubt.
Without a past that could betray him.
The second general looked at Hale.
“Then what were you doing?””
Hale remained silent.
The second general’s expression changed.
“You weren’t the original either, were you?””
Malik looked confused.
“What?””
The second general stepped closer.
“You said the original Marcus Hale died.””
He looked at the man beside him.
“So who are you?””
The question hung there.
The original general looked toward the old report.
Toward the picture of the dead soldier.
Then toward Vale.
Finally, he answered.
“I don’t know.””
Everyone froze.
The man who had commanded armies.
The man who had been a symbol of strength.
Admitted he didn’t know who he was.
Malik felt the entire story shift again.
This wasn’t about a fake general replacing a real one.
It was bigger.
Much bigger.
Adrian’s voice returned.
“You’re finally asking the right questions.””
Malik looked at the phone.
“Then answer them.””
The old man didn’t respond immediately.
When he did, his voice was quieter.
“Twenty-eight years ago, Marcus Hale died.””
The original general stared at the phone.
“But before he died…”
A pause.
“He made one final decision.””
Malik felt his heartbeat increase.
“What decision?””
Adrian answered:
“He chose which version of himself would survive.””
The screen flickered.
A new file appeared.
No warning.
No password.
Just a title.
*NIGHTFALL FINAL SUBJECT REPORT.*
Malik opened it.
The first page loaded.
And there was a photograph.
Not of two generals.
Not of three.
But five.
Five men.
All wearing the same face.
Below the picture was one sentence:
*MARCUS HALE WAS NEVER ONE PERSON.*
The file continued loading.
Then another line appeared.
*SUBJECT FOUR IS STILL ACTIVE.*
Malik stared.
“Subject four?””
Nobody moved.
Then the security camera above the gate suddenly turned toward the base entrance.
A figure appeared on the feed.
Walking out of the shadows.
Wearing a military uniform.
With the same face.
The same eyes.
The same scar.
May you like
Another Marcus Hale.
And this one was holding a weapon.
