Chapter 8: The Architect Returns

Every screen on Fort Adams went black.

For five seconds, the entire base disappeared into darkness.

No security cameras.

No access panels.

No communication systems.

Only the emergency lights remained, casting the entrance in a dim red glow.

Then a single image appeared.

A black screen.

A white symbol.

The same symbol Malik had seen on the old case.

Project Nightfall.

Underneath it, one sentence appeared.

*WELCOME BACK, SUBJECTS.*

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The word sat there like a threat.

Subjects.

Not soldiers.

Not officers.

Not people.

Subjects.

Malik looked at the four men standing near him.

Four versions of the same impossible story.

The original Marcus Hale.

The engineered Marcus.

Elias Vale.

Subject Four.

All of them staring at the same message.

All of them realizing something worse had happened.

The past had returned.

“Adrian,” Vale said quietly.

The phone remained connected.

But there was no answer.

“Adrian?””

Static.

Then a voice.

Not Dr. Adrian Hale.

A different voice.

Younger.

Colder.

More confident.

“Dr. Hale is unavailable.””

Everyone turned toward the speakers.

Malik felt his heartbeat increase.

“Who is this?””

The voice ignored him.

“Project Nightfall containment has failed.””

The message continued.

“Primary subjects located.””

Malik looked at the four men.

“Primary subjects?””

The voice continued.

“Recovery procedure beginning.””

The original Marcus Hale stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who built the foundation you’re standing on.””

Vale’s face changed.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“Commander Elias Vale.””

Vale looked around.

“You know me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

A moment of silence.

Then the answer:

“Because I created the reason you survived.””

Vale froze.

Malik looked at him.

The commander who had spent twenty-eight years searching for answers suddenly looked like he had found something he didn’t want.

Subject Four moved closer to the speaker.

“Who are you?””

The voice responded immediately.

“Subject Four.””

The man stopped.

“You were never supposed to wake up.””

For the first time, Subject Four looked uncertain.

“Who are you?””

The voice repeated:

“The architect.””

The original Marcus Hale stared at the screen.

“Adrian.””

“No.””

The voice became sharper.

“Adrian was a researcher.””

A pause.

“I was the reason he researched.””

Malik looked at Brooks.

She looked back.

Neither understood.

But they both knew one thing.

This was bigger than one scientist.

Bigger than one mission.

Bigger than one stolen identity.

“Show yourself,” Brooks ordered.

The voice laughed softly.

“Still giving commands.””

The lights above them flickered.

Then the security doors behind the group opened.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped into the entrance.

Older.

Gray hair.

Military coat.

No weapon.

No fear.

He walked with the confidence of someone entering his own home.

Malik stared.

He knew the face.

Not because he had met him.

Because he had seen him.

In the files.

In photographs.

On documents marked classified.

Dr. Adrian Hale.

But something was wrong.

The man on the screen had said Adrian was unavailable.

And now Adrian was standing there.

The doctor looked around.

His eyes moved across the room.

First to Vale.

Then Subject Four.

Then the two Marcus Hales.

Finally, Malik.

“You found them.””

Nobody answered.

Adrian smiled slightly.

“You found all of them.””

The original Marcus Hale looked at him with disbelief.

“You.””

Adrian stopped.

“Hello, Marcus.””

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Adrian looked almost amused.

“Same way you are.””

The words struck everyone.

Malik watched Marcus carefully.

The general’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian walked closer.

“It means you finally understand.””

The second Marcus stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You knew what I was?””

“Yes.””

The man’s expression tightened.

“And you let me believe I was real.””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“You are real.””

The second Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is the only one that matters.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You feel pain.””

The man said nothing.

“You remember.””

Silence.

“You love.””

His voice softened.

“You fear.””

The second Marcus looked away.

Adrian continued.

“So tell me, why would that make you less real?””

Nobody had an answer.

Even Malik felt the weight of the question.

A person wasn’t just how they began.

Maybe it was what they became.

But Adrian wasn’t finished.

He turned toward the original Marcus.

“You, however…”

The room became colder.

“You are the one who still doesn’t understand.””

Marcus Hale stared.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You think you survived.””

A pause.

“You didn’t.””

Malik felt the tension rise.

The general’s voice became quiet.

“Then what am I?””

Adrian walked closer.

“You are the first successful transfer.””

Nobody moved.

Vale looked confused.

“Transfer?””

Adrian nodded.

“The Nightfall project wasn’t about copying people.””

He looked at the four men.

“It was about preserving them.””

Malik frowned.

“Preserving?””

Adrian continued.

“When the original Marcus Hale died, we had two choices.””

The general looked at him.

“Bring him back.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Impossible.””

Then:

“Or preserve enough of him that the world would never know he was gone.””

Malik stared.

“So you split him?””

Adrian nodded.

“Identity. Memory. Skill. Emotion.””

He looked at Subject Four.

“Truth.””

Then at the second Marcus.

“Function.””

Then at the original.

“Continuity.””

The original Hale’s face tightened.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You told me you saved me.””

“I did.””

“You lied.””

“No.””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

“I saved what was left.””

Silence.

The words were devastating.

Marcus Hale looked down.

For the first time, Malik saw something break inside him.

Not fear.

Grief.

Because somewhere deep down, the general knew.

He had always known.

The missing memories.

The strange gaps.

The moments where he felt disconnected from his own past.

They weren’t trauma.

They were evidence.

Vale stepped forward.

“Then why was I erased?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because you discovered the truth.””

“And?””

“You tried to expose it.””

Vale laughed bitterly.

“So you killed me.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“I saved you.””

Vale stared.

“You call disappearing my life saving?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian’s answer was simple.

“Because the people controlling Nightfall were not trying to preserve soldiers.””

A pause.

“They were trying to replace leaders.””

Everyone went still.

Brooks looked at him.

“Who?””

Adrian looked toward the command building.

“The people who funded the project.””

Malik followed his eyes.

“Inside this base?””

Adrian nodded.

“Always.””

The realization hit.

The enemy wasn’t outside.

It had never been outside.

It had been inside the walls.

The entire time.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Soldiers approaching.

Brooks looked toward the entrance.

“Security team.””

But Adrian didn’t look surprised.

“Too late.””

The doors opened.

A squad of armed personnel entered.

Not regular security.

Special operations.

Their weapons were raised.

And at the front stood a man Malik recognized.

The highest-ranking officer at Fort Adams.

The base commander.

General Richard Cross.

He looked around the room.

At Adrian.

At Vale.

At the four versions of Marcus Hale.

Then smiled.

“After twenty-eight years…”

He looked at the Project Nightfall symbol on the screens.

“…we finally have all the pieces.””

Malik stared.

“You knew?””

Cross looked at him.

“Private Carter.””

Again.

Another person who knew his name.

“I knew everything.””

Brooks raised her weapon.

“General Cross, stand down.””

Cross ignored her.

His eyes remained on the four men.

“You have no idea how long we’ve waited for this.””

Marcus Hale stepped forward.

“What do you want?””

Cross smiled.

“The final step.””

A soldier behind him activated a device.

The screens changed.

A new file opened.

*PROJECT NIGHTFALL: REINTEGRATION PROTOCOL.*

Malik read the title.

His stomach dropped.

“What is that?””

Cross answered.

“The process that puts Marcus Hale back together.””

Everyone looked at the four men.

Adrian’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“No.””

Cross smiled.

“Yes.””

He looked at Malik.

“After tonight, there will no longer be four versions.””

A pause.

“There will only be one.””

The machine behind him powered on.

May you like

And Subject Four whispered the words nobody wanted to hear.

“They’re going to erase us.””
