Chapter 7: The Fourth Face
The figure on the security camera kept walking.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like he had all the time in the world.
Like he belonged there.
Malik stared at the screen.
Another Marcus Hale.
Another impossible face.
Another impossible truth.
But this one was different.
The others had looked confused.
Angry.
Afraid.
This one looked prepared.
In his hand was a weapon.
Not raised.
Not aimed.
Just carried.
Which somehow made it worse.
“Lock down the entrance,” Sergeant Brooks ordered.
Malik didn’t move.
His eyes stayed on the monitor.
“Private.””
He looked at her.
“Now.””
Training took over.
Malik turned toward the security panel and began entering the lockdown command.
His fingers moved quickly.
The barrier system responded.
*WARNING: COMMAND OVERRIDE ACTIVE.*
Malik frowned.
“What?””
Brooks stepped closer.
“What is it?””
“The system won’t accept lockdown.””
“Why?””
Malik looked at the screen.
“Because someone already has control.””
Everyone looked toward the original General Hale.
But he shook his head.
“Not me.””
The second general looked disturbed.
“Not me either.””
Vale stared at the camera feed.
His face had gone completely serious.
“Adrian.””
The old man’s voice came through the phone.
“Yes.””
Vale looked at the screen.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“You knew there was another one.””
A pause.
“I knew there was a possibility.””
Vale laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“You always have an answer.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice became quieter.
“Only a reason.””
The fourth Marcus Hale continued approaching.
Every camera tracked him.
Every movement was recorded.
But the security system didn’t mark him as a threat.
It recognized him.
Malik felt his stomach tighten.
The base wasn’t trying to stop him.
It was letting him walk in.
“Who is he?”” Brooks asked.
Nobody answered.
The fourth figure reached the inner security checkpoint.
He stopped.
Then looked directly into the camera.
Malik felt a chill.
It was impossible.
The camera was mounted high above the entrance.
There was no way he could know where they were watching from.
Yet he stared directly at them.
Then he smiled.
A small, confident smile.
The intercom clicked.
His voice came through.
“Private Malik Carter.””
Malik froze.
Again.
His name.
“Don’t answer,” Vale said.
But the fourth man continued.
“I know you’re listening.””
Malik stayed silent.
The man looked at the camera.
“You have questions.””
No one spoke.
“You should.””
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
“That’s the problem with soldiers. They’re trained to follow answers before they ask questions.””
Brooks moved toward the radio.
“Identify yourself.””
The man ignored her.
Instead, he said:
“You found the first mistake.””
His eyes shifted slightly.
“You found the second mistake.””
Then:
“And now you’ve found me.””
Malik looked at the other three men.
First Marcus Hale.
Second Marcus Hale.
Elias Vale.
Three people connected to the same secret.
And now a fourth.
The fourth man reached the security door.
It unlocked automatically.
Malik stared.
“He’s entering.””
Brooks immediately raised her weapon.
The original Hale stepped forward.
“Wait.””
She looked at him.
“You want me to wait?””
“Yes.””
“General, he’s armed.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Hale looked at the approaching figure.
“Because if he wanted us dead, he wouldn’t have walked through the front door.””
The door opened.
The fourth Marcus Hale entered the entrance area.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The only sound was his footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
He looked exactly like the other two.
But there was something different.
The original Hale carried exhaustion.
The second carried confusion.
This man carried certainty.
He looked at everyone like he already knew the ending.
He stopped several feet away.
Then looked at the original general.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Hale stared.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“You know.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
The fourth man glanced toward the photograph on the table.
Then toward Vale.
Then the second general.
“You all finally found each other.””
Vale stepped forward.
“What did Adrian make you for?””
The fourth man looked at him.
“Not what.””
A pause.
“Who.””
Vale’s eyes narrowed.
The man continued.
“I wasn’t made to replace Marcus.””
He looked at the second general.
“I wasn’t made to protect Marcus.””
Then he looked at the original.
“I wasn’t made to hide Marcus.””
Malik felt a chill.
“Then why?””
The fourth man looked at him.
“Because someone had to remember.””
Nobody understood.
The man lowered his weapon.
Slowly.
“I am Subject Four.””
Brooks kept her weapon aimed.
“Your name?””
The man looked at her.
“Marcus.””
She frowned.
“That’s not enough.””
The man nodded.
“Good.””
For the first time, he looked impressed.
“You’re the first person here who asked the obvious question.””
He looked at the three others.
“Everyone else spent years accepting the name.””
Malik stared.
“If you’re Marcus Hale…”
The man interrupted.
“I’m not.””
Silence.
The original general looked at him.
“Then who are you?””
Subject Four answered:
“I am the memory of Marcus Hale.””
Nobody spoke.
The phrase sounded impossible.
But after everything Malik had seen, impossible was becoming normal.
“What does that mean?”” Malik asked.
The man walked closer.
“Adrian understood something.””
He looked at the three men.
“A person isn’t just a face.””
He tapped his temple.
“It’s memory.””
He pointed to his chest.
“Emotion.””
Then his hands.
“Behavior.””
Subject Four continued.
“So he divided Marcus Hale into parts.””
Malik felt cold.
“Parts?””
“Yes.””
The man looked at the original general.
“One carried the identity.””
He looked at the second.
“One carried the skills.””
Then at Vale.
“One carried the guilt.””
Vale’s expression changed.
“And you?””
Subject Four looked at him.
“I carried the truth.””
Nobody moved.
The fourth man reached into his uniform.
Everyone tensed.
But he pulled out a small device.
A digital recorder.
Old.
Damaged.
He placed it on the table.
“Twenty-eight years ago, before Project Nightfall ended, Adrian recorded a message.””
Malik looked at it.
“For who?””
Subject Four looked at the original Marcus Hale.
“For him.””
The general stared.
“Why?””
“Because you asked him to.””
Hale shook his head.
“I never asked Adrian to create this.””
“No.””
Subject Four stepped closer.
“You asked him to save your life.””
The general went silent.
“And when he told you saving your life required a sacrifice…”
A pause.
“You agreed.””
Malik looked at Hale.
“Sacrifice?””
Subject Four looked at the old photograph.
“The original Marcus Hale died in that bunker.””
He looked at the general.
“But the man who walked out was something else.””
Malik’s heart raced.
“Then who walked out?””
Subject Four didn’t answer.
Instead, he pressed the recorder.
Static filled the entrance.
Then a voice.
A younger voice.
A voice Malik had never heard before.
But everyone else recognized.
Marcus Hale.
The recording began.
“If you’re hearing this…”
The young voice stopped.
A breath.
Then:
“Something went wrong.””
The original Hale closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Adrian was right. The experiment worked.””
Brooks looked confused.
“The experiment?””
The voice continued.
“But we underestimated the cost.””
Static.
Then:
“Identity cannot be copied without leaving something behind.””
Malik stared.
The message became clearer.
“If you created this recording, then you already know.””
A pause.
“You are not me.””
The original Hale stepped back.
“No…”
The second general looked shaken.
The recording continued.
“You are pieces of me.””
Nobody spoke.
The fourth man watched them.
Then the final sentence played.
A sentence that changed everything.
“The real Marcus Hale died because he discovered who was controlling Project Nightfall.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Malik looked at the phone.
At Adrian’s connection.
At the four men carrying pieces of one identity.
Then the monitor behind him flashed.
A new alert appeared.
Not from Adrian.
Not from security.
From an unknown source.
*SUBJECT ZERO HAS AWAKENED.*
Subject Four looked at the screen.
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
“No.””
Malik turned.
“What?””
Subject Four stared at the message.
“Subject Zero was never supposed to exist.””
The original Hale stepped closer.
“Who is Subject Zero?””
Subject Four slowly looked toward the base.
Toward the command building.
Toward the place where the highest-ranking officers worked.
Then he whispered:
“The original.””
Malik felt his blood run cold.
“The original Marcus Hale?””
Subject Four shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“The original person who created Marcus Hale.””
Everyone froze.
And then every screen inside Fort Adams went black.
May you like
One message appeared across all of them.
*PROJECT NIGHTFALL HAS BEEN REACTIVATED.*
