Chapter 6: The Secret Behind The Voicemail
Nobody spoke after the voicemail ended.
The phone screen went dark.
But Elena’s voice stayed.
Don’t let her find Amara.
Five words.
Five words that changed the way I looked at the woman standing across from me.
Vanessa.
The person who had made my birthday feel like a punishment.
The person who had watched me stand at the sink while everyone celebrated.
The person who had spent years telling me, without saying the words directly, that I was temporary.
She had known.
She had always known.
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
His face was impossible to read.
That scared me more than if he had yelled.
“Marcus: Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
For once, she didn’t have an answer ready.
“Vanessa: Marcus…”
His voice remained calm.
“Marcus: Where is the rest of the recording?””
She looked away.
That was when I knew.
There was more.
“Amara: There’s more?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Her expression changed.
Almost like she remembered I was still a child.
Almost.
“Vanessa: Amara, you need to understand—”
Marcus stepped between us.
“Marcus: No.””
His voice was firm.
“Marcus: She needs to understand the truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa: You’re going to destroy this family over a message from a woman who abandoned her?””
The words hit me.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She still said it.
Abandoned.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Marcus: You know what happened.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“Marcus: Tell me.””
The room felt smaller.
The birthday decorations around us suddenly looked ridiculous.
The balloons.
The cake.
The gifts.
A celebration built on top of a secret.
Vanessa walked to the kitchen island and leaned against it.
Her confidence was slowly disappearing.
“Vanessa: Seven years ago, Elena was not stable.””
Marcus watched her carefully.
“Marcus: That’s not an answer.””
“Vanessa: It’s the truth.””
“Marcus: Then prove it.””
She looked frustrated.
“Vanessa: You think every secret means someone is guilty.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Marcus: No. I think hiding evidence from a father makes someone responsible.””
That sentence landed.
Vanessa looked down.
“Vanessa: I found Elena outside a hospital.””
I listened carefully.
“Vanessa: She was scared. She was convinced people were following her.””
Marcus frowned.
“Marcus: What people?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Vanessa: She never said.””
“Marcus: And you believed her?””
“Vanessa: I didn’t know what to believe.””
The answer surprised me.
Because for the first time, Vanessa sounded human.
Not cruel.
Not cold.
Just someone who had made choices.
Bad choices.
“Vanessa: She asked me to help her.””
Marcus went still.
“Marcus: Help her how?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Vanessa: She wanted to see Amara.””
My heart stopped.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“Amara: She wanted to see me?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
“Amara: She came back for me?””
Marcus’s face softened.
But Vanessa spoke first.
“Vanessa: Yes.””
The word was quiet.
Almost painful.
“Vanessa: She came back.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
All these years, I had imagined my mother forgetting me.
Moving on.
Choosing another life.
But she had come back.
She had tried.
“Amara: Then why didn’t she?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And that was the question she didn’t want to answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Marcus: Why didn’t she?””
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Vanessa: Because I stopped her.””
The room went completely still.
Even Marcus seemed unable to move.
“Marcus: What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“Vanessa: I stopped her from taking Amara.””
My heart dropped.
Marcus’s voice became dangerous.
“Marcus: Explain that sentence.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Vanessa: I thought I was protecting her.””
“Marcus: You took a child away from her mother.””
“Vanessa: I thought Elena was dangerous!””
“Marcus: And you decided that?””
Vanessa looked angry again.
“Vanessa: You weren’t there!””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Marcus: I wasn’t there because you never told me.””
Silence.
Vanessa looked away.
I couldn’t understand.
I wanted to hate her.
Part of me did.
But another part of me was trying to understand how someone could convince themselves they were doing the right thing while hurting a child.
“Amara: What happened to my mom?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Her face changed.
The anger faded.
“Vanessa: She left.””
My chest tightened.
Marcus immediately noticed.
“Marcus: Is that true?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Marcus: Vanessa.””
She looked down.
“Vanessa: I don’t know.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“I don’t know what happened after that night.””
Marcus stared.
“Marcus: What night?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Vanessa: The night she came here.””
My eyes widened.
“She came here?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Vanessa: She stood outside this house.””
I looked around.
The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.
“She was here?””
“Vanessa: Yes.””
Marcus looked toward the front door.
“Marcus: And I never knew?””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“Vanessa: You were deployed.””
The room went quiet.
I imagined it.
My mother standing outside.
Close enough to touch the door.
Close enough to see the house where I lived.
And I never knew.
“Amara: What did she say?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Vanessa: She said she had proof.””
Marcus immediately focused.
“Marcus: Proof of what?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Vanessa: She said someone had been lying about why she lost custody.””
Marcus froze.
“Marcus: Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Marcus: Who, Vanessa?””
She looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“She said it wasn’t an accident.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Amara: What wasn’t?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The reason she disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus slowly picked up the phone again.
“Marcus: Where is Elena now?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And this time, she looked afraid.
“Vanessa: I don’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“Marcus: You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Vanessa: I know how it sounds.””
“Marcus: It sounds like you’ve spent seven years keeping secrets.””
She didn’t argue.
Because it was true.
Then suddenly, the front door opened.
All three of us turned.
A man’s voice came from the hallway.
“Marcus?””
Marcus looked surprised.
“Marcus: David?””
A tall man in a dark jacket stepped inside.
I had never seen him before.
He held a folder in his hand.
His eyes moved around the room.
The birthday decorations.
The tense faces.
Then me.
“David: I’m sorry for showing up without calling.””
Marcus walked toward him.
“Marcus: What are you doing here?””
The man looked uncomfortable.
“David: I found something.””
Marcus stared at the folder.
“Marcus: Found what?””
David looked at me.
Then back at Marcus.
“David: Information about Elena.””
My heart started racing.
Marcus took the folder.
“Marcus: What kind of information?””
David hesitated.
Then said:
“David: She didn’t leave the country like everyone believed.””
The room went silent.
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
An address.
And a recent date.
His eyes widened.
“Marcus: This is impossible.””
David shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It’s not.””
I stepped closer.
“Amara: Who is she?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
His hands tightened.
Then he whispered a name.
A name that made Vanessa turn pale.
Because it meant the past wasn’t buried.
May you like
It had been waiting.
“Marcus: Elena is alive.””
