Chapter 8: The Mother At The Door

For seven years, I imagined what my mother would look like if I ever saw her again.

Sometimes I imagined she would look exactly like the photograph.

Sometimes I imagined she would look like a stranger.

Sometimes, when I was angry, I imagined she wouldn’t recognize me at all.

But I never imagined this.

A woman standing on a small porch, crying before she even touched me.

A woman looking at me like she had been searching for my face in every crowd.

“Amara…”

The way she said my name was different from everyone else.

Marcus said my name with protection.

Teachers said it with responsibility.

Vanessa said it like it was something she had to tolerate.

But Elena said it like it was something precious.

I stood frozen.

My feet wanted to move.

My heart wanted to run.

But my mind was still trying to understand that the person I had spent years missing was standing right in front of me.

Marcus stepped closer to her.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

They just stared.

Two people carrying seven years of unanswered questions.

Finally, Elena whispered:

“Elena: Marcus.””

His jaw tightened.

“Marcus: You’re alive.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Elena: Yes.””

His voice was quiet.

“Marcus: Why didn’t you come back?””

The question hurt.

I saw it on her face.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Elena: I tried.””

Marcus looked away.

“Marcus: We searched.””

“I know.””

“Marcus: We thought…”

He stopped.

Because saying the word dead felt impossible.

Elena nodded.

“I know what you thought.””

Her eyes moved toward me again.

She looked afraid.

Not afraid of me.

Afraid of losing this moment.

“Amara…”

I finally moved.

One step.

Then another.

My hands were shaking.

“Amara: Are you really my mom?””

The question broke her.

She covered her mouth.

Then she nodded.

“Elena: Yes.””

A thousand emotions hit me at once.

I wanted to hug her.

I wanted to ask why she left.

I wanted to tell her I missed her.

I wanted to tell her I hated that I missed her.

Instead, I whispered:

“Amara: Why didn’t you come?””

Elena closed her eyes.

That question had been waiting seven years.

And I think she knew she deserved to hear it.

She came down from the porch slowly.

“Elenа: Because I was trying to keep you safe.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then back at her.

“Amara: From who?””

Her face changed.

The same fear from the voicemail appeared.

“Elenа: From people who wanted control over your life.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Marcus: Elena, we need the truth.””

She looked at him.

“I know.””

Her eyes moved to Vanessa’s empty space beside the car.

“She’s not here.””

Nobody answered.

Elena understood.

“Elenа: She knows?””

Marcus nodded.

“She knows everything.””

Elena looked down.

“Elenа: Then it’s time.””

She opened the front door.

“Elenа: Come inside.””

The house was small.

Nothing like the mansion.

But it felt warm.

There were books stacked on tables.

Plants near the windows.

Photos on the walls.

A life.

A quiet life.

A life she built while I was somewhere else.

I looked around.

And then I noticed something.

A shelf.

Filled with pictures of me.

My stomach tightened.

There were pictures from when I was little.

Pictures I had never seen.

Me laughing.

Me holding a stuffed bear.

Me asleep in someone’s arms.

“Amara: You kept these?””

Elena looked over.

“Elenа: I kept everything.””

Her voice broke.

“Elenа: Every birthday card. Every drawing. Every picture.””

I touched one of the frames.

“Amara: Then why did everyone say you left?””

Elena sat down.

Marcus remained standing.

He looked like he needed answers too.

Elena folded her hands.

“Elenа: Because someone made sure that was the story.””

The room became quiet.

“Marcus: Tell us.””

She looked at him.

“Elenа: After I lost temporary custody, I was told I couldn’t contact you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Marcus: By who?””

“Elenа: A court representative.””

David, who had been silent, looked up.

“David: Did you know the representative?””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

“David: Did you ever meet them again?””

“No.””

David exchanged a look with Marcus.

Something was wrong.

Elena continued.

“I was told that if I tried to see Amara, I would make things worse.””

My chest tightened.

“So you believed them?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“Elenа: I didn’t believe them.””

She took a breath.

“I tried to fight.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Marcus: What happened?””

Elena looked at the floor.

“Elenа: The evidence against me kept appearing.””

“Marcus: What evidence?””

“Elenа: Reports. Statements. Documents.””

She shook her head.

“All of them said I was unstable.””

I looked at her.

“Amara: Were you?””

The question came out quietly.

Everyone became still.

Elena didn’t get angry.

She didn’t defend herself immediately.

She just answered.

“Elena: I was struggling.””

That honesty surprised me.

“Elena: After your father died, I was broken. I was grieving. I made mistakes.””

She looked at me.

“But being broken does not mean I stopped being your mother.””

My eyes filled.

Because I understood that.

More than anyone.

“Elenа: I asked Marcus for help.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“You contacted me?””

She nodded.

“Elenа: Many times.””

He looked away.

“Marcus: I never received anything.””

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

David opened his folder.

“David: Because someone intercepted them.””

Elena looked at him.

“You found it too?””

David nodded.

“David: We found missing communication records.””

Marcus stared.

“Marcus: Someone was controlling what information reached us.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Then she looked toward me.

“And that person wanted you to believe I abandoned you.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because if you stopped looking for me, they won.””

Nobody spoke.

The answer felt bigger than Vanessa.

Bigger than a family argument.

Someone had taken a child’s relationship with her mother and turned it into a weapon.

Marcus walked toward the window.

His hands were clenched.

“Marcus: Vanessa knew.””

Elena’s expression changed.

“She knew some things.””

“Marcus: She hid the letter.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I suspected.””

Marcus turned.

“Marcus: You suspected?””

Elena looked at him.

“Elenа: Marcus, Vanessa wasn’t alone.””

The room went silent.

David stepped forward.

“David: What do you mean?””

Elena walked to a drawer.

She removed a small notebook.

The cover was worn.

She placed it on the table.

“I started writing everything down.””

Marcus opened it.

Pages filled with dates.

Names.

Meetings.

Notes.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“Marcus: This name…”

Elena looked at him.

“I know.””

He looked up.

“Marcus: Why would he be involved?””

I looked between them.

“Amara: Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Elena did.

“Your uncle.””

The word hit me.

I had never heard that before.

“My uncle?””

Elena nodded.

“Your father’s brother.””

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

Elena looked at him sadly.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

David took the notebook.

He flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

“David: There’s a final entry.””

Everyone leaned closer.

He read the last line.

His face turned serious.

“David: ‘If anything happens to me, protect Amara from the person closest to Marcus.’”

My heart started pounding.

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Elena: I never knew who it was.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

It was David’s phone.

He answered.

“David: Hello?””

His expression changed.

“David: What?””

He looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

The color drained from his face.

“David: We have a problem.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What happened?””

David slowly lowered the phone.

“Someone broke into the mansion.””

A cold feeling ran through me.

“Marcus: Was anything taken?””

David looked at the notebook.

Then at Elena.

“No.””

A pause.

“David: They were looking for one thing.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“What?””

David swallowed.

“The letter from Elena.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Because whoever had spent seven years hiding the truth…

knew we had finally found it.
