Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Lies

The drive back to the mansion felt nothing like the drive away from it.

When we left, I was searching for a mother I thought I had lost forever.

Now I was returning to a house full of secrets.

The same house where I had washed dishes on my birthday.

The same kitchen where Vanessa told me I didn’t belong.

The same place where Marcus discovered that almost everything he believed about my past had been built on lies.

But now I knew something else.

Someone had broken into that house looking for Elena’s letter.

Not money.

Not jewelry.

Not anything valuable.

The truth.

Marcus drove with both hands tightly gripping the steering wheel.

I sat in the back seat beside Elena.

My mother.

The words still felt strange.

Beautiful.

Scary.

She kept looking at me through the mirror.

Like she was afraid I would disappear.

I understood that feeling.

I had spent years afraid everyone else would.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“Marcus: Elena, when we get there, you stay with Amara.””

Elena looked at him.

“Elenа: What are you going to do?””

His expression hardened.

“Marcus: Find out who entered my house.””

David sat beside him, checking something on his phone.

“David: Marcus, don’t assume it was one person.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Marcus: Explain.””

David turned the screen around.

“David: The security system was disabled from inside.””

The car went silent.

My stomach dropped.

“Amara: Inside?””

David nodded.

“David: Whoever did this knew the layout.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Marcus: Someone who lives there.””

Nobody said Vanessa’s name.

But everyone thought it.

When we arrived, police lights were already flashing outside the mansion.

Neighbors stood nearby, whispering.

The birthday decorations were still visible through the windows.

Balloons floating.

Lights glowing.

A house that looked perfect from the outside.

But I knew better now.

Marcus parked and immediately stepped out.

Before he reached the door, a police officer approached.

“Officer: Captain Reed?””

Marcus nodded.

“Marcus: What happened?””

The officer glanced at me.

Then Elena.

Then back at Marcus.

“Officer: Whoever entered was careful. No signs of forced entry.””

Marcus looked toward the house.

“Marcus: Which means?””

The officer lowered his voice.

“Officer: They had access.””

My mother reached for my hand.

I noticed.

Her fingers were shaking.

“Amara: Are you okay?””

She looked surprised.

Like she wasn’t used to someone asking.

Then she smiled sadly.

“Elena: I’m okay now.””

That answer hurt.

Because it meant she hadn’t been okay before.

Inside the mansion, everything felt different.

The birthday decorations looked almost fake.

Like they belonged to another family.

A family that never existed.

Marcus walked through the kitchen first.

The sink was empty.

The apron I wore earlier was gone.

But the memory wasn’t.

I could still feel the cold water on my hands.

I could still hear Vanessa’s voice.

You don’t belong.

Marcus stopped near the counter.

I saw his face change.

He was remembering too.

Elena noticed.

“Elena: What happened here?””

Marcus looked at me.

Then answered honestly.

“Marcus: She was made to feel like she wasn’t part of this family.””

Elena looked at me.

Pain filled her eyes.

“Amara…”

I looked away.

Not because I didn’t want her sympathy.

Because I didn’t want to cry again.

David walked toward the staircase.

“David: The bedroom was searched.””

Marcus followed.

I hesitated.

Then Elena held my hand.

“Elenа: We can stay here.””

I nodded.

But then I heard something.

A voice.

From upstairs.

“Vanessa?””

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately moved.

The police officer followed.

Seconds later, Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her hair was messy.

Her expensive dress was wrinkled.

For the first time, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked scared.

“Marcus: Where were you?””

Vanessa looked at Elena.

Her face changed.

Shock.

Fear.

Then something else.

Regret.

“Vanessa: You found her.””

Elena stared.

“Elenа: You knew I was alive.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Marcus: Answer her.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Vanessa: Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed whatever was left.

Marcus stared.

“Marcus: How long?””

Vanessa whispered.

“Vanessa: Seven years.””

The room became silent.

I watched Marcus absorb those words.

Seven years.

Seven birthdays.

Seven years of believing a lie.

“Marcus: You knew she was alive for seven years?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Vanessa: I didn’t know where she was.””

“Marcus: But you knew she existed.””

She nodded.

“Vanessa: Yes.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Marcus: Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I saw the answer before she spoke.

“Vanessa: Because I was afraid.””

Everyone expected something else.

An excuse.

A lie.

But she admitted it.

She was afraid.

“Marcus: Of Elena?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“Vanessa: Of losing you.””

The words were quiet.

But they revealed everything.

Marcus stepped back.

“Marcus: So you erased a child’s mother because you were afraid?””

Vanessa cried silently.

“Vanessa: I didn’t plan for it to go this far.””

Elena’s voice was calm.

“Elenа: But it did.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology surprised me.

Not because it fixed anything.

It didn’t.

But because it was the first time Vanessa sounded like she understood the damage.

Marcus looked at David.

“Marcus: The break-in.””

David nodded.

“David: We need to know if Vanessa was involved.””

Vanessa immediately looked up.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Vanessa: I didn’t break into my own house.””

Marcus studied her.

“Marcus: Then who did?””

Vanessa hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

Because she knew.

“Marcus: Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Vanessa: My brother.””

Marcus froze.

“Marcus: What?””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“Vanessa: He helped me seven years ago.””

Elena went pale.

“Elenа: Your brother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Vanessa: He was the one who told me what Elena was planning.””

David stepped closer.

“David: What was she planning?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She was going to expose him.””

The room went silent.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Marcus: Expose him for what?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Vanessa: For changing the custody documents.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked confused.

“Marcus: Why would your brother do that?””

Vanessa looked at Elena.

Then at Marcus.

“Vanessa: Because he wanted access to your family.””

David frowned.

“David: That doesn’t make sense.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“It will.””

She walked toward a drawer.

Pulled out a hidden envelope.

And handed it to Marcus.

“Vanessa: I kept this because I was scared.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A document.

And a handwritten note.

His face changed as he read it.

“Marcus: No…”

Elena stepped closer.

“Elenа: What is it?””

Marcus looked up.

His voice was barely audible.

“It’s proof.””

David took the document.

His eyes widened.

“David: This isn’t just about Amara.””

Everyone waited.

David looked at Marcus.

“This was about your entire family.””

I felt a chill.

Marcus turned the paper over.

At the bottom was a signature.

A name.

The same name Elena had written in her notebook.

The person behind the lies.

The person who had been moving pieces for seven years.

Marcus whispered:

“My brother.””

Then his phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man’s voice came through.

“Unknown Caller: You should have left the past buried, Marcus.””

Marcus’s face turned cold.

“Marcus: Who is this?””

A pause.

Then the voice said:

“Unknown Caller: The person who saved your family from Elena.””

Elena grabbed my hand.

Because she recognized the voice.

Her face turned pale.

“Elenа: No…”

Marcus looked at her.

“Marcus: Who is it?””

Elena whispered the name.

And when she said it, I understood why she had been afraid all these years.

May you like

Because the person behind everything…

was someone we had trusted.
