Chapter 12: The Woman Who Remembered Me

I hated that I recognized her.

Not her face.

Not her voice.

Something deeper.

Something buried.

The moment she said the word mother, something inside me reacted before my mind could.

A memory.

A feeling.

A piece of a life I didn’t know I had.

I saw a hand.

A woman’s hand holding mine.

A song.

A doorway.

Then it disappeared.

I stepped back.

“No.””

The woman’s eyes filled.

“Benjamin.””

“Don’t call me that.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

But I couldn’t help it.

That name didn’t belong to me.

Bear did.

Bear was built from everything I survived.

The woman swallowed.

“I know this is hard.””

“You think?””

Victor moved between us.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The woman looked at him.

“You knew he was alive.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“I protected him.””

“No.””

Her voice became cold.

“You protected the secret.””

Everyone went quiet.

I looked at her.

“Who are you?””

She looked at me.

“My name is Evelyn Jackson.””

The last name.

Jackson.

My last name.

I had heard it my entire life.

But suddenly it felt unfamiliar.

“You’re my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Where have you been?””

Her face broke.

“Looking for you.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing made sense anymore.

“Everyone was looking for someone.””

I pointed around the room.

“Mason was looking for me. You were looking for me. They were looking for me.””

My voice hardened.

“And somehow I was the only person who didn’t know I was lost.””

Evelyn cried silently.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

“No more apologies.””

I stepped closer.

“I want the truth.””

She nodded.

“You deserve that.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Mia.

Then at the hidden room.

Then at the photographs.

“Mason found out what happened to you.””

“What happened?””

Her eyes lowered.

“When you were a child, you witnessed something you weren’t supposed to see.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“A deal.””

The room became colder.

“Between who?””

Evelyn looked at the broken wolf symbol.

“The people who created this.””

I looked at the symbol.

“And Mason?””

“He tried to expose them.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew what they did to you.””

My fists tightened.

“What did they do?””

Evelyn looked directly at me.

“They erased you.””

Silence.

Not metaphorically.

Not emotionally.

Literally.

“They changed your records. They moved you. They made sure nobody could connect you to your past.””

I looked at my hands.

My scars.

My life.

“So Bear…”

She nodded.

“Bear was the person you became after they stole Benjamin.””

The words hurt.

Because they felt true.

I looked at Mason’s files.

At the photographs.

At the life I didn’t remember.

“Why would they do that?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because you were evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked at Mia.

“Of what they were doing.””

I understood then.

Mia wasn’t just a child.

She was a connection.

A piece of the same puzzle.

Mason.

Me.

Her.

All connected.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Mason.

I opened it.

*DO NOT LET HER TAKE YOU.*

I looked at Evelyn.

She saw my expression.

“What did he say?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly I didn’t know who to trust.

My own mother.

My dead friend.

My brothers.

The people who claimed to protect me.

Everyone had been right.

And everyone had lied.

Mia walked closer.

She looked at Evelyn.

“Do you know my daddy?””

Evelyn’s face softened.

“Yes.””

“Is he coming back?””

The question broke something in everyone.

Evelyn knelt.

“I hope so.””

Mia looked down.

“He promised.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“He always kept promises.””

A sound interrupted us.

A crash outside.

Everyone turned.

Victor moved toward the window.

Then stopped.

His face went pale.

“What?””

I moved beside him.

Outside, vehicles surrounded the building.

Too many.

And in front of them stood one person.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Wearing the broken wolf symbol.

But that wasn’t what made everyone afraid.

It was the way Mason’s voice came through my phone at the exact same moment.

“Bear.””

I answered.

“Mason?””

His voice shook.

“That’s him.””

I looked outside.

“At who?””

A pause.

Then Mason whispered:

“The man who raised you.””

The figure outside lifted his head.

Even through the window, I could feel his eyes on me.

Then he smiled.

May you like

And I heard Mason say:

“Bear… meet your father.””
