Chapter 13: The Father Behind the Mask
I had spent my entire life believing I knew what abandonment felt like.
I thought it was losing people.
I thought it was watching friends disappear.
I thought it was standing beside an empty grave and realizing someone you loved was never coming back.
I was wrong.
The real pain was standing in front of someone who had been there all along…
and realizing they chose not to be.
The man outside the building stared through the window.
Even from a distance, I knew.
Not because I remembered him.
Because everyone else did.
Everyone in the room changed when they saw him.
Victor.
Renee.
Calvin.
Even Evelyn.
Their fear was immediate.
Instinctive.
The kind of fear that comes from knowing exactly what someone is capable of.
My phone was still pressed against my ear.
“Mason.””
His breathing was heavy.
“Bear.””
“Who is he?””
Silence.
I watched the man outside.
Waiting.
“Mason.””
Finally, his voice came.
“His name is Marcus.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
“Your father.””
The words didn’t feel real.
I had spent years thinking I had no family.
Now, in one night, I had gained a mother.
And found a father I never knew existed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Mason’s voice broke.
“Because he would have found you sooner.””
I looked outside.
“He already found me.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“And that’s my fault.””
I turned away from the window.
For five years, Mason had been a ghost.
Now he was a voice full of regret.
“Explain.””
“Marcus was never just a father.””
The room became silent.
“He built the organization behind the broken wolf.””
My eyes moved to the symbol.
“The same people?””
“Yes.””
“And me?””
Mason didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Why was I important?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“I’ll tell him.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the window.
“Because Benjamin saw what Marcus did.””
I looked at her.
“I was a child.””
“You were six.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did I see?””
Evelyn’s face filled with pain.
“Your father meeting with people who were hurting families.””
I clenched my jaw.
“And I remembered?””
“No.””
“Because they erased it?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Marcus outside.
The man who had created my life before stealing it from me.
“He’s my father.””
Evelyn nodded.
“But he’s also the reason you lost everything.””
The door opened.
Everyone moved.
Marcus walked inside.
No weapon.
No guards.
No fear.
That was worse.
A man who didn’t need protection was always more dangerous.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on me.
For a moment, he looked human.
Almost emotional.
“Benjamin.””
I hated that name.
But hearing it from him hurt differently.
“Don’t call me that.””
His expression changed slightly.
“You don’t remember.””
“No.””
A pause.
“That was intentional.””
My fists tightened.
“You admit it?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then at Mason’s files.
Then back at me.
“I did what I had to do.””
I laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
He stepped closer.
“You survived because of me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“I survived despite you.””
The room went silent.
Marcus studied me.
Then smiled slightly.
“Mason was right about you.””
That made me freeze.
“What?””
“He said you would become someone stronger than the person they tried to create.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew Mason?””
Marcus nodded.
“Better than you did.””
A wave of anger hit me.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I do.””
His voice hardened.
“Because I was there when he begged me to stop.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus continued.
“Mason found out what happened to you. He confronted me.””
“You hurt him.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I saved him.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Tell him.””
She looked away.
That was enough to scare me.
“Tell me what?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Mason came to Marcus before he disappeared.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Marcus had information about the people hunting Mia.””
My eyes moved to Marcus.
“You helped him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he fake his death?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because he discovered someone inside his own circle betrayed him.””
I thought of Victor.
Darius.
Everyone.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Mia.
“The same person who has been closest to her.””
Everyone turned.
Mia.
The room froze.
I stepped in front of her.
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at Renee.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Renee’s face went pale.
“No.””
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Mia was never supposed to survive.””
The words destroyed the room.
Renee shook her head.
“Stop.””
“You know it’s true.””
I looked at her.
“What is he talking about?””
Renee’s eyes filled with tears.
“I…”
She couldn’t finish.
Mia stepped backward.
“Mom?””
That one word broke Renee.
She covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
My heart dropped.
Because I had heard those words before.
From everyone.
Sorry.
A word people used after they had already destroyed something.
Marcus looked at me.
“The truth is not who you think it is.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Mason.
One line.
*BEAR, DON’T LET MARCUS LEAVE.*
I looked up.
Marcus saw my face.
He knew.
May you like
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
