Chapter 7: The Hand Holding the Secret
The moment Mason’s words ended, I stopped breathing.
Not because I was scared.
Because I was thinking.
In my world, fear was simple.
A threat came at you.
You saw it.
You reacted.
But this was different.
This was a knife hidden behind a smile.
A bullet already fired but still traveling.
I looked at every person standing around me.
Renee.
Darius.
The scar-faced man.
Everyone had a reason to lie.
Everyone had something to hide.
And somewhere among them was the person Mason warned me about.
The person already holding Mia’s hand.
My eyes dropped.
Mia was holding mine.
My heart sank.
Because for one second, I wondered if Mason meant me.
Then I hated myself for even thinking it.
Mia was a child.
She had trusted me.
And Mason knew that.
“Bear?”” Mason’s voice came through the phone.
I didn’t answer.
“Bear, listen to me.””
I turned away from everyone.
“Mason, stop talking in riddles.””
A long pause.
Then his voice softened.
“I’m trying to keep her alive.””
I looked at Mia.
“She’s standing right here.””
“No.””
The word came quickly.
Too quickly.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
“I can’t.””
My jaw tightened.
“You’ve been alive for five years. You called your daughter every birthday. You left clues.
You knew I would find her. And now you’re telling me you can’t explain?””
Silence.
Then:
“I trusted the wrong person.””
The sentence hit me.
“Who?””
The call went quiet.
“Mason?””
“Bear…”
His voice cracked.
“Look at the people around you.””
I did.
“Tell me who brought Mia to that wreck.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Who made sure she would be there when you arrived?””
I looked at Renee.
Then Darius.
Then the others.
I didn’t know.
And that scared me.
The call suddenly cut.
I lowered the phone.
Everyone watched me.
The scar-faced man spoke first.
“What did he say?””
I didn’t answer.
Darius stepped forward.
“Bear.””
I looked at him.
“You were with Mason.””
His face changed.
A small reaction.
But enough.
“When?””
“Before he disappeared.””
Darius looked away.
“That was a long time ago.””
“Answer me.””
He sighed.
“Mason called me six months before the crash.””
The air went still.
Six months.
I stepped closer.
“You knew he was planning something?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
His eyes hardened.
“You think I had a choice?””
“There’s always a choice.””
He looked at Mia.
“Not when someone is threatening your family.””
That stopped me.
“Who threatened yours?””
Darius didn’t answer.
Renee did.
“The same people who threatened Mason.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the ground.
“I knew this day would come.””
The scar-faced man shook his head.
“You should have stayed away.””
Renee looked at him.
“I tried.””
“Tried?””
Her eyes became cold.
“I spent five years pretending I didn’t have a daughter.””
Mia looked up.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Why?””
The single word destroyed every adult standing there.
Renee looked at her.
Because no matter how many secrets surrounded us, one truth remained.
A little girl wanted her mother.
“I thought it would keep you safe.””
Mia wiped her face.
“But you left.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.
Mia stepped back.
“I waited.””
Renee’s voice broke.
“I know.””
“No.””
Mia shook her head.
“You don’t.””
Nobody spoke.
The wind moved across the empty road.
A child’s pain was louder than any engine.
I looked away.
Because I had seen men break in fights.
I had seen people collapse from injuries.
But watching a child realize adults had chosen secrets over her was something else.
Then Darius suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He grabbed Mia’s arm.
My body reacted instantly.
I pushed him back.
“What are you doing?””
Darius stumbled.
“Bear, listen—”
“No.””
I stepped between them.
“You don’t touch her.””
His face was desperate.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“By grabbing her?””
“By getting her away from them!””
I looked around.
“Who?””
Darius looked toward the vehicles.
The answer came without words.
The scar-faced man reached inside his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
But he pulled out a small device.
A tracker.
My stomach dropped.
“I found this on Mia’s jacket.””
Renee went pale.
“I didn’t put that there.””
Darius shook his head.
“Neither did I.””
The device beeped.
Once.
Twice.
Then the scar-faced man looked toward the road.
“They’re close.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Because suddenly every phone in the area began ringing.
Not one.
All of them.
Renee.
Darius.
The others.
Mine.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Then a message appeared.
*YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO GIVE HER BACK.*
Mia saw my face.
“Bear?””
I locked the phone.
“No one is taking you anywhere.””
The scar-faced man looked at me.
“You don’t know what you just started.””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
I looked at Mia.
“Yes, I do.””
The sound of engines filled the road.
More vehicles.
More headlights.
Coming from every direction.
And then my phone rang again.
Mason.
I answered.
This time, I didn’t say hello.
I just listened.
His voice came quietly.
“Bear.””
“I’m here.””
A pause.
Then:
“Don’t let them take Mia.””
“I won’t.””
Another pause.
Then Mason whispered:
“Because the person coming for her…”
My grip tightened.
“Who?””
May you like
His answer froze my blood.
“Is the person who raised her.””
