Chapter 2: The Secret Behind My Name

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

The words sat in my mind like broken glass.

She’s my niece.

Not my daughter.

For twelve years, I had called Marcus Carter Dad.

I had his smile.

His stubbornness.

The way he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel when he was thinking.

I remembered him teaching me how to ride a bike when I was six. I remembered him sitting beside my bed when I had the flu. I remembered him staying up all night helping me finish a science project about the solar system.

None of those memories felt fake.

But now I wondered if they were.

I slowly opened my bedroom door.

The hallway light was on.

Their voices stopped.

My father looked up first.

And the second he saw my face, I knew he understood.

“Nia…”

His voice broke.

I stepped downstairs.

“Is it true?””

Neither of them answered.

That silence was an answer.

“Am I not your daughter?””

My father walked toward me.

“No, baby. Listen to me.””

“Don’t call me that.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Nia, I need you to understand something.””

“You lied to me.””

“I protected you.””

“That’s what everyone says when they do something they know is wrong.””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time in my life, she looked guilty.

My father sat down slowly.

“I should have told you sooner.””

I crossed my arms.

“Who am I?””

That question scared him.

I could see it.

“My name is Nia Carter,” I said.

“Is it even real?””

“Yes.””

“Who is my mother?””

The room became quiet.

My father looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Your mother’s name was Elena.””

“Was?””

His eyes filled.

“She disappeared when you were a baby.””

I sat down across from him.

I felt angry.

I felt confused.

But more than anything, I felt like my entire life had shifted without anyone warning me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your mother asked me to protect you.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes pain came out in strange ways.

“She asked you to lie?””

“She asked me to keep you alive.””

That sentence changed the air.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

My father rubbed his hands together.

“I was Elena’s brother. She was my little sister. She was smart.

Fearless. Too fearless sometimes.””

He looked toward the window.

“Your mother worked around powerful people. She discovered something she wasn’t supposed to find.””

“What?””

“Financial crimes.””

I listened.

A part of me wanted to walk away.

Another part needed every answer.

“Your biological father was a man named Richard Vale.””

The name meant nothing to me then.

But it would soon mean everything.

“He was the founder of Vale International,” Marcus continued.

“A billionaire.””

I stared at him.

“A billionaire?””

“Yes.””

I almost laughed again.

All my life, I worried about asking for thirty-four-dollar shoes.

Meanwhile, my biological father was apparently one of the richest men in the country.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Marcus whispered.

“It’s just something you were never allowed to know.””

He went upstairs and returned with an old envelope.

His hands were shaking.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman stood beside a tall man in a suit.

My mother.

Elena.

She looked happy.

Alive.

The man beside her looked confident.

Richard Vale.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

My hands trembled as I read it.

“Nia Elise Vale. My daughter. My only heir.””

I looked up.

“Why would my mother hide this?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because she found out someone inside Richard’s company was stealing millions.””

“Who?””

“Daniel Cross.””

The name from earlier.

“The company executive.””

My father nodded.

“Daniel was moving money through fake accounts. Elena found proof. She was going to expose him.””

“What happened?””

“She disappeared.””

The answer was too simple.

Too painful.

“What do you mean disappeared?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I mean Daniel came after her.””

The room felt cold.

“Your mother knew she was in danger. She contacted me. She told me she needed time to gather more evidence.””

“Did she die?””

My father closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

That answer hurt.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“I thought she was gone forever.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I knew.””

Everyone turned toward her.

My father stood.

“What did you say?””

Her face changed.

“I knew where Elena was.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know what to do.””

My father stared at her.

“You knew?””

“She came to me because she was scared. She thought I could help.””

“And you told Daniel.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I felt sick.

“You gave my mother away?””

“I was afraid!””

The room exploded.

“You were afraid?”” Marcus shouted.

“Elena was running for her life!””

“I had children!””

“So did she!””

Vanessa cried harder.

“I thought Daniel would only scare her. I didn’t know he would try to destroy everything.””

My father looked like he had aged ten years.

“You almost got Nia killed.””

I backed away.

All these years.

All these secrets.

Everyone had been making decisions about my life while I was just living inside the consequences.

“Where is my mother now?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then my father reached into the envelope again.

He pulled out another piece of paper.

“She left this for you.””

I stared at it.

A letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I held it.

I didn’t open it.

Not yet.

Because suddenly I was afraid.

Afraid that the truth I had spent my whole life wanting would hurt more than the lies.

My father looked at me.

“Nia, whatever happens next, remember one thing.””

I looked at him.

“You were never unwanted.””

His voice cracked.

“You were the reason I kept fighting.””

May you like

And for the first time that night, I wondered if the biggest lie of my life wasn’t that Marcus wasn’t my father.

Maybe it was believing he wasn’t.
