Chapter 4: The Man Who Owned Everything

Richard Vale arrived in a black car that looked like it belonged in a movie.

I hated that I noticed.

I hated that part of me was impressed.

Because I didn’t want to care about money.

I didn’t want the first thing I thought about my biological father to be his mansion, his expensive watch, or the security team standing quietly near the driveway.

I wanted him to just be a person.

But it was hard.

Richard Vale wasn’t just a person.

He was a name.

A name that appeared on buildings.

A name people recognized.

A name attached to billions of dollars.

And somehow, half of that name was supposed to belong to me.

He stepped out of the car slowly.

He was older than I expected.

I had imagined someone cold.

Someone who looked like a villain.

But Richard looked tired.

Like a man who had been searching for something he never thought he would find.

His eyes landed on me.

And he stopped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then he whispered,

“Elena’s eyes.””

I didn’t know what to say.

So I said the first thing that came to my mind.

“Do you always say that when you meet strangers?””

Marcus almost smiled.

Richard looked surprised.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

“You have her attitude too.””

“I don’t know if that’s a compliment.””

“It is.””

He looked at me carefully.

Not like an investor.

Not like someone evaluating an asset.

Like someone trying to memorize my face.

“I thought I lost you.””

I crossed my arms.

“But you didn’t even know where I was.””

The words hit him.

Good.

I needed him to understand.

“I know,” he said quietly.

I wasn’t prepared for that answer.

No excuses.

No pretending.

Just honesty.

“I failed you,” he continued.

The driveway became silent.

“I should have protected Elena better. I should have found the truth sooner.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

There was history between all of them.

Pain that started before I was old enough to understand it.

Richard took a step closer.

“I’m not here because of the inheritance.””

I raised an eyebrow.

“That’s convenient.””

He nodded.

“I understand why you don’t believe me.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.

My body tensed.

“What is that?””

“Information.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Richard.””

“It’s not about money.””

Richard opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Reports.

Evidence.

“Daniel Cross didn’t just steal from my company.””

I looked at the papers.

“He built a system.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What kind of system?””

“A network of fake companies. Accounts overseas. People inside the organization who helped him move money.””

My stomach tightened.

“And my mother found it.””

Richard nodded.

“She found more than that.””

He looked at me.

“She found proof that Daniel was willing to destroy anyone who exposed him.””

A car passed slowly outside the house.

Marcus noticed.

So did Richard.

The mood changed.

Security moved closer.

I felt it.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Are we in danger?”” I asked.

Neither man answered immediately.

That was answer enough.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Yes.””

I hated that.

I hated that after twelve years, after finally learning the truth, danger was waiting right behind it.

“What happened to my mother?””

Richard looked down.

“I don’t know.””

My heart hurt.

Again.

“But I believe she survived.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena was a fighter.””

He looked at the letter in my hand.

“And because she planned for this moment.””

That night, after Richard left, Marcus sat with me in the living room.

“You okay?””

I shrugged.

“No.””

He nodded.

“That’s fair.””

I looked at him.

“Are you scared?””

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he answered.

“Yes.””

I had never heard him admit that before.

“Why?””

“Because I spent twelve years protecting you from the world.””

He looked toward the door.

“And now the world knows where you are.””

I leaned against the couch.

“Do you wish you never took me?””

His eyes immediately filled.

“No.””

Not even a second.

“Never.””

I believed him.

But there was one question I still needed answered.

“Did my mother know you were raising me?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Then why did she think you betrayed her?””

The silence lasted too long.

Finally, he said,

“Because I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“I changed your identity.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“I thought if Daniel was looking for Elena’s daughter, you would never be safe.””

My voice became quiet.

“So you hid me.””

“Yes.””

“Without telling her?””

Marcus looked down.

“I lost contact with her.””

The truth hurt.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father wasn’t a villain.

But he wasn’t perfect either.

He made a choice.

A choice made from love.

A choice that still caused damage.

And somewhere out there was a man named Daniel Cross who had spent twelve years believing he had won.

But he didn’t know something.

He didn’t know Elena had left behind evidence.

He didn’t know Richard Vale had found his daughter.

And he definitely didn’t know the little girl everyone had been fighting over was no longer willing to stay silent.

Because I wasn’t a secret anymore.

I was Nia.

And I was ready to know everything.
