Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

After Daniel Cross came to Richard’s house, everything changed.

There were security guards outside our home.

Marcus started checking the locks twice before bed.

He stopped taking the same route to work every day.

I noticed.

I noticed everything.

Because when your life changes overnight, you become good at reading people.

You notice when someone smiles but their eyes are worried.

You notice when adults stop talking because a child walked into the room.

You notice when everyone says, “Everything is okay,” and nobody actually believes it.

I hated feeling scared.

But I hated feeling powerless more.

So I started searching.

Not online.

Not where anyone could track me.

I searched through the things my mother left behind.

The letter.

The photograph.

The old documents Marcus kept hidden in a locked box.

One night, I found something.

A small recording device.

Old.

Scratched.

Almost forgotten.

I brought it downstairs.

Marcus froze when he saw it.

“Where did you find that?””

“In your box.””

He looked nervous.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Dad.””

He sat down.

“I don’t know if you’re ready.””

I frowned.

“I’m tired of people deciding what I’m ready for.””

The words surprised him.

But then he nodded.

“You’re right.””

He placed the recorder on the table.

“That belonged to your mother.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What’s on it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You never listened?””

He shook his head.

“Your mother gave it to me sealed.””

“Why?””

“She told me only to open it when you were old enough to know the truth.””

I stared at the device.

“Am I old enough?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I think you’ve been old enough for a long time.””

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

My entire body went still.

Because I had never heard it before.

But I knew.

Somehow, I knew.

“Nia.””

I covered my mouth.

My mother.

Elena.

A voice from twelve years ago.

“If you are hearing this, something happened that kept me from coming home.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The recording continued.

“Marcus did not betray me.””

I looked at him.

His eyes were already full of tears.

“I know he will blame himself. He always does. But he made the choice he believed would keep my daughter safe.””

My father covered his face.

I had never seen him cry before.

Not once.

“My biggest fear was Daniel Cross finding Nia. He believed if he controlled my daughter, he controlled the future.””

The recording paused.

Then Elena spoke again.

“But Daniel made one mistake.””

My hands tightened.

“He underestimated love.””

A tear fell down my face.

“He thought money was the strongest thing in the world.””

Her voice became softer.

“It isn’t.””

A pause.

“Love is.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

For a long time.

Then Marcus whispered,

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“She knew you didn’t betray her.””

He nodded.

“She knew.””

I moved closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled again.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

Not perfect.

Not heroic.

Just human.

The next morning, Richard arrived with new information.

His face looked serious.

“I found something.””

Marcus stood immediately.

“What?””

“A financial trail.””

Richard placed documents on the table.

“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

I looked at the papers.

“How many people?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Marcus shook his head.

“So the company was compromised for years.””

Richard nodded.

“And Elena knew.””

My mother.

A woman who had been fighting people with more money, more power, and more influence.

A woman who still thought about me every second.

I touched the letter beside me.

She wasn’t a missing person anymore.

She was a voice.

A warning.

A mother who had prepared for a future she might never see.

Then the doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Marcus moved in front of me.

Richard looked toward the entrance.

The security guard outside answered.

A few seconds later, his voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Vale?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here with a letter.””

Richard’s face changed.

“Who?””

The guard hesitated.

Then answered.

“Daniel Cross.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at Richard.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice came through the speaker.

“I think you’ll want to hear what Elena left behind.””

I stepped forward.

The person who had tried to erase my mother was standing outside my door.

Holding something she had written.

Something that could reveal everything.

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia, stay back.””

But I couldn’t.

Not anymore.

For twelve years, people had protected me by hiding the truth.

May you like

Now the truth was finally coming to me.

And I was ready.
