Chapter 6: The Name Buried Alive

Adrian didn’t speak for almost a full minute.

I learned something about people during that silence.

The loud ones usually had the least to hide.

The quiet ones?

They were remembering.

And Adrian Whitmore was remembering something he had spent years trying to forget.

“Tell me about Victor,” I said.

He looked away.

“You don’t want to be involved in this.””

I almost laughed.

“That stopped being my choice when someone sent me a threat.””

His jaw tightened.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“And I’m trying to understand why someone tried to hurt a child.””

That got his attention.

Because every conversation came back to Emma.

Not money.

Not revenge.

Not business.

A little girl in a pale dress who had been sitting at a dinner table when someone decided she was acceptable damage.

Adrian finally sat down.

“Victor Kane was my best friend.””

His voice was quieter now.

“We met when we were young. Before the companies. Before the money.””

I listened.

“He believed the world belonged to people willing to take it.””

“That sounds like a compliment.””

“It wasn’t.””

Adrian looked at his hands.

“Victor was brilliant. But he always thought rules were for other people.””

“What did he steal?””

“Millions.””

The answer came quickly.

Like he had said it many times.

“To this day, I still don’t know how long it was happening.””

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“There were legal consequences.””

“For him?””

“For both of us.””

I studied him.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian sighed.

“Because when you build something with someone, your name becomes attached to theirs.””

“So you protected your reputation.””

His eyes met mine.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Most people would have denied it.

“I thought I could handle it quietly,” he continued.

“And Victor?””

“I confronted him.””

“What happened?””

Adrian looked toward the window.

“He vanished.””

“Then you said he died.””

“Yes.””

“Who confirmed it?””

That question changed everything.

Adrian didn’t answer.

I leaned forward.

“Adrian.””

“No one.””

The words landed heavily.

“You thought he died.””

He nodded.

“We found his abandoned car. There was evidence suggesting an accident.””

“But no body.””

“No.””

I sat back.

All the pieces started connecting.

The threats.

Dominic.

The hidden person.

The message.

Victor Kane.

Someone had spent years letting Adrian believe a lie.

“Why would Victor come back now?””

Adrian looked exhausted.

“Because I’m successful.””

“That’s it?””

“No.””

He stood.

“He wants something.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked around his office.

The awards.

The photographs.

The symbols of everything he built.

Then I understood.

“He wants to take it.””

Adrian didn’t respond.

He didn’t have to.

Later that evening, Detective Reed arrived with new information.

He placed several photographs on the table.

“We tracked financial activity connected to Dominic.””

Adrian looked through them.

“What did you find?””

“Payments.””

“From who?””

Reed paused.

Then said:

“An account connected to Victor Kane.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt the air leave the room.

Because a name from the past had just walked into the present.

Dominic covered his face with his hands.

“It’s not what you think.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You helped him.””

“I had no choice.””

“Everyone says that.””

Dominic looked up.

“You don’t understand what he does.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

Dominic’s eyes moved toward me.

And for a second, I saw something I hadn’t expected.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He knows everything.””

“About what?”” Adrian asked.

“About your company.””

“That’s not enough.””

Dominic shook his head.

“No.””

He swallowed.

“He knows about the night your wife died.””

The room froze.

I looked at Adrian.

His face changed instantly.

A memory had opened.

A wound that never healed.

“What did you say?”” Adrian whispered.

Dominic looked terrified.

“I didn’t want to be part of this.””

“What does my wife have to do with Victor?””

Dominic said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

I realized then that this wasn’t just about money.

It wasn’t just revenge.

It was about a secret buried years ago.

A secret Adrian had never told anyone.

A secret Victor Kane had carried.

And now someone was willing to destroy lives to bring it into the light.

Adrian slowly picked up the photographs.

His hands were shaking.

The first time I had ever seen him lose control.

“Find him,” he said.

Detective Reed looked at him.

“Adrian—”

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I spent years believing Victor Kane was gone.””

He looked at the evidence.

“He isn’t.””

Then he looked at me.

And I saw the fear in his eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for what would happen when the truth came out.

“Maeve,” he said quietly.

“Yes?””

“When Victor comes back…”

He stopped.

“What?””

May you like

His voice dropped.

“Don’t believe everything you hear about me.””
