Chapter 8: The Secret No One Wanted Found
I wish I could say Adrian looked angry.
Anger would have been easier.
Anger meant control.
But he didn’t look angry.
He looked broken.
Like Victor Kane hadn’t just spoken a sentence.
He had opened a door Adrian had spent years holding shut.
“My wife died in an accident,” Adrian said.
Victor tilted his head.
“That’s what you told yourself.””
“Leave.””
“You still think you’re the victim.””
Adrian moved forward.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Victor smiled.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
I stood there, watching two men who clearly shared a history I couldn’t understand.
But I understood one thing.
Victor wasn’t trying to hurt Adrian physically.
Not yet.
He wanted something worse.
He wanted to destroy the story Adrian told himself.
“What happened to his wife?”” I asked.
Neither man answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Because silence is often where the truth hides.
Victor looked at me.
“You really don’t know.””
“Know what?””
He looked at Adrian.
“You never told her.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Don’t involve her.””
Victor laughed.
“That’s the problem with you. You always decide what people can handle.””
That sentence felt familiar.
Because Adrian had done the same thing to me.
Trying to protect me by keeping me away.
But sometimes secrets don’t protect people.
They trap them.
Victor walked toward the desk.
“Your husband—”
He stopped.
Then corrected himself.
“Your friend here built his empire by pretending he was the only honest man in the room.””
Adrian’s voice was cold.
“Enough.””
Victor ignored him.
“Tell her about the night Elena died.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Elena?””
His wife.
The name I had never heard before.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Pain.
Not fake.
Not controlled.
Real.
“Victor,” Adrian said quietly.
“No.””
Victor pointed at him.
“You don’t get to erase what happened.””
The tension was unbearable.
I looked at Adrian.
“Tell me.””
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
Finally, he spoke.
“My wife wasn’t supposed to be driving that night.””
Victor smiled.
“There it is.””
Adrian continued.
“She was going to meet me.””
“For what?””
“To tell me something.””
“What?””
He looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
That surprised me.
“You don’t know?””
“She never made it.””
The room went quiet.
“I got a call saying there had been an accident.””
Victor stepped closer.
“And what did you do?””
Adrian looked at him.
“I mourned my wife.””
“No.””
Victor shook his head.
“You buried questions.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Because the police said it was an accident.””
“Because the evidence was arranged to make it look like one.””
My breath caught.
“Are you saying Victor caused her death?””
Adrian looked at me.
And that was when I realized something.
He didn’t know.
All these years.
He didn’t know.
Victor reached into his coat.
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“What are you doing?””
Victor pulled out an envelope.
Not a weapon.
Documents.
He handed them to me.
“Read.””
Adrian grabbed for them.
I moved back.
“Maeve.””
“I need to know.””
He stopped.
Because he knew.
I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of reports.
Insurance documents.
Emails.
One message stood out.
A message from Elena.
Sent the night she died.
To Adrian.
*I found proof. Victor has been lying to you. We need to talk before it’s too late.*
My hands went cold.
I looked up.
Adrian stared at the page.
Like he was seeing it for the first time.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Victor watched him.
“You trusted me.””
Adrian didn’t move.
“You trusted me when everyone else warned you.””
“Stop.””
“You lost your wife because you believed the wrong person.””
Adrian looked like he couldn’t breathe.
And for the first time, I saw the man beneath everything.
Not the businessman.
Not the wealthy father.
Just a person carrying a grief he never understood.
Then Detective Reed’s voice came from the doorway.
“Everybody freeze.””
We turned.
He stood there with two officers behind him.
His eyes moved from Victor to Adrian.
Then to the documents in my hand.
“I knew this would bring you here.””
Victor smiled.
“Did you?””
Detective Reed stepped closer.
“Yes.””
He looked at Adrian.
“Because we found something else.””
Adrian barely looked up.
“What?””
Detective Reed held out a folder.
“The original accident report.””
Victor’s smile faded.
“It was hidden.””
Adrian took the folder.
Opened it.
Read one page.
Then another.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Detective Reed did.
“The accident wasn’t caused by a mechanical failure.””
A silence fell.
“Someone cut the brake line.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian looked at Victor.
And Victor Kane finally stopped smiling.
May you like
Because for the first time in years…
the truth was no longer buried.
