Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Closed Door
For three days, I tried to convince myself that I could walk away.
I told myself I was a waitress.
Not a detective.
Not a bodyguard.
Not someone who belonged in the middle of a war between powerful men with secrets buried deeper than most people’s dreams.
But every time I looked at the small scar forming across my palm, I remembered Emma’s face.
I remembered the way she grabbed my sleeve.
The way she whispered, “Don’t let him get me.””
And I knew I couldn’t pretend nothing happened.
Some moments change your life because you choose them.
Others change your life because they choose you.
That night at the Hawthorne Room had chosen me.
Detective Reed called me just after noon.
“Maeve, where are you?””
I looked around the restaurant kitchen.
“Working.””
“You need to leave.””
The seriousness in his voice made me stop.
“What happened?””
“We found Victor Kane.””
My hand tightened around my phone.
“Alive?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
The word should have surprised me.
But somehow, it didn’t.
Because deep down, I think I already knew.
“Where?””
“We’re not sure yet.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It means we know where he was last seen.””
I waited.
“Your restaurant.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Security footage from the week before the attack.””
I looked toward the dining room.
The same room where everything started.
“The camera system caught someone entering through the employee entrance.””
“And?””
“The face wasn’t clear.””
My heart raced.
“But?””
“But the person was wearing the same gray coat Emma described.””
I sat down.
The kitchen suddenly felt too small.
“Why would he come here?””
Detective Reed lowered his voice.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.””
After I hung up, I found Adrian waiting outside.
I didn’t know how long he had been there.
Long enough to worry me.
“You heard?””
He nodded.
“Detective Reed called me too.””
I crossed my arms.
“You knew Victor might come near me.””
“I suspected.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
Adrian looked tired.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“By keeping me uninformed?””
“I didn’t want you scared.””
I laughed softly.
“Adrian, someone threw something at your daughter. Someone threatened me. Someone is pretending a dead man is alive.””
I stepped closer.
“I think we’re past the point where information makes things worse.””
He looked away.
And I knew I had hit the truth.
People like Adrian weren’t used to losing control.
But that was exactly what was happening.
He had spent his entire life building walls.
Money.
Security.
Influence.
And someone had walked right through them.
“I need to show you something,” he said.
I followed him to his car.
Not because I trusted him completely.
I didn’t.
But because I knew something was coming.
And I needed answers.
We drove across the city to an old building near the edge of downtown.
It looked nothing like Adrian’s company headquarters.
No glass.
No luxury.
Just brick walls and locked doors.
“Where are we?”” I asked.
“My old office.””
“From when?””
“Before everything changed.””
Inside, dust covered the furniture.
The place felt abandoned.
Like someone had walked away and never returned.
Adrian led me to a room at the back.
A private office.
He unlocked a drawer.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Old files.
And one picture that stopped me.
Adrian and Victor.
Young.
Smiling.
Friends.
Before betrayal.
Before revenge.
Before everything fell apart.
“That was us,” Adrian said.
I looked at the photo.
“You looked happy.””
“We were.””
“What happened?””
Adrian took a breath.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
He handed me a file.
Inside were documents about his first company.
Financial records.
Partnership agreements.
Then I saw a name.
Victor Kane.
“He didn’t just steal money,” Adrian said.
I looked up.
“What did he do?””
“He manipulated everything.””
I turned the pages.
“He created problems inside the company. Turned employees against each other. Made people doubt me.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor believed the only way to win was to make everyone else lose.””
I thought about Dominic.
The fear.
The lies.
The way people around Victor seemed trapped.
“He controls people.””
Adrian nodded.
“That’s what he does.””
A noise came from the hallway.
We both froze.
Adrian reached for his phone.
I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone wasn’t trying to hide.
The door opened.
And a man stepped inside.
Gray coat.
Calm expression.
Older than I expected.
But unmistakable.
Victor Kane.
The man Adrian buried in his past.
The man who wasn’t supposed to exist.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Victor smiled.
“Adrian.””
His voice was almost friendly.
Almost.
“I see you finally found someone who believes the truth matters.””
His eyes moved to me.
And I understood immediately.
He knew exactly who I was.
“The waitress.””
I felt my shoulders tense.
Victor smiled wider.
“Interesting.””
Adrian stepped between us.
“Stay away from her.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
Victor looked at him.
“This was never about Emma.””
The room went silent.
My heart started beating faster.
“Then what was it about?”” Adrian asked.
Victor looked at me.
May you like
And said:
“Ask him why your wife really died.””
