Chapter 5: The Recording From the Past

The restaurant had never felt so quiet.

Richard Sterling stood frozen beside the table, staring at the phone in his hand.

The video continued playing.

A younger version of himself stood in his old apartment, his face twisted with anger, his voice filled with words Richard could not remember saying.

Words that sounded like they belonged to someone else.

Someone cruel.

Someone he refused to believe he had been.

Then came the second voice.

A voice that should have been impossible.

His father.

James Sterling.

Dead for fifteen years.

Richard’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“No.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Victoria watched him carefully.

Amara looked confused.

Daniel looked worried.

Maya simply looked scared.

The little girl moved closer to her mother.

“Mom…”

Amara immediately wrapped an arm around her.

“It’s okay.””

But her voice didn’t sound like she believed it.

Richard pressed pause.

The screen froze on his younger face.

His own expression.

His own eyes.

A stranger wearing his skin.

He looked at Victoria.

“Where did you get this?””

Victoria didn’t answer immediately.

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters.””

His voice was dangerously calm.

“Everything matters now.””

Victoria looked at the phone.

“Your father kept records.””

Richard’s face changed.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Victoria gave a bitter smile.

“You spent your whole life believing James Sterling was a brilliant businessman.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“He was.””

“He was also a man who controlled everyone around him.””

Amara looked at Victoria.

“You knew.””

Victoria ignored her.

“Your father knew about Amara.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

“He knew about the baby.””

The words hit him.

Richard looked at Maya.

Then back at Victoria.

“My father knew I had a daughter?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“And he decided what would happen.””

Richard felt sick.

“No.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“You think you built everything yourself.””

Her voice lowered.

“You think every decision you made was yours.””

Richard stared.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying your father was always there.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Mr. Sterling…”

Richard looked at him.

Daniel hesitated.

“There’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“The recording isn’t fake.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“How do you know?””

“Because I was there.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I was your father’s assistant.””

Richard stared.

“My father’s assistant?””

“Yes.””

“How old were you?””

“Twenty-two.””

Richard took a slow breath.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Daniel looked at Amara.

She nodded.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

Daniel continued.

“Your father discovered Amara was pregnant.””

Richard listened silently.

“He was afraid it would damage your image.””

“My image?””

Daniel nodded.

“You were becoming successful. Investors liked your story. The young businessman who came from nothing.””

Richard looked disgusted.

“So he wanted me to hide my family?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“He wanted you to forget you had one.””

The sentence cut deeper than Richard expected.

Victoria spoke softly.

“Your father told me to handle it.””

Richard looked at her.

“Handle it?””

Her expression changed.

“I was young.””

Richard laughed.

A cold, empty sound.

“You were forty-two years old.””

Victoria looked away.

“I was scared.””

“For what?””

“For losing everything.””

Richard stared at her.

“You were scared of losing money.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became emotional for the first time.

“I was scared of losing you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Amara stepped forward.

“You didn’t love him.””

Victoria looked at her.

“You don’t know what love is.””

Amara’s expression hardened.

“Love doesn’t destroy innocent people.””

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“You think you were innocent?””

Richard immediately noticed.

The anger between them was not new.

This was a war that had started long before tonight.

“What happened between you two?””

Neither woman answered.

Richard looked at both of them.

“I’m done hearing pieces of the story.””

He placed the phone on the table.

“I want everything.””

Amara took a deep breath.

“I met Victoria two weeks before I disappeared.””

Richard frowned.

“You knew each other?””

Amara nodded.

“She came to my apartment.””

Victoria interrupted.

“Because I needed answers.””

Amara looked at her.

“You threatened me.””

“I warned you.””

“You told me Richard would never choose me.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Every sentence felt like another piece of his life collapsing.

“What did you say to her?””

Victoria looked at him.

“I told her the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That you were changing.””

Richard stared.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at the phone.

“Watch the rest.””

Richard looked at the screen.

He pressed play.

The video continued.

The younger Richard stood in the apartment.

Amara was crying.

Then James Sterling’s voice came through.

“Richard, you don’t understand what you’re risking.””

Young Richard replied:

“She’s carrying my child.””

The room went silent.

Richard stopped breathing.

Because that voice sounded familiar.

Not angry.

Not threatening.

Desperate.

His younger self continued:

“I love her.””

James responded coldly.

“Love does not build companies.””

Richard’s hands shook.

The video continued.

“I built this future for you,” James said.

“You will not throw it away for a woman who has nothing.””

Amara’s face appeared on screen.

Young Richard stepped toward her.

“I’ll protect you.””

Then James spoke again.

“You won’t.””

A pause.

“You’ll do exactly what I tell you.””

Richard stared.

Because the person in the video was no longer him.

It was a younger man being controlled.

A son afraid of disappointing his father.

Then the younger Richard said something that made Maya cover her mouth.

“If anything happens, it’s my fault.””

Amara looked at the screen.

She whispered:

“I never saw that part.””

Richard looked at her.

“You never saw this?””

She shook her head.

“The video I saw started later.””

Richard paused the recording.

“What happened after this?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria whispered:

“Your father deleted the original.””

Richard turned.

“But you have it.””

Victoria nodded.

“How?””

“I saved a copy.””

“Why?””

Her eyes met his.

“Because I knew one day you would need to know.””

Richard stared.

“You kept evidence of your own betrayal for twenty years?””

Victoria’s expression broke.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Amara laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

“Fix it?””

She looked at Victoria.

“You let a child grow up without her father.””

Victoria looked down.

Richard noticed something.

For the first time.

Victoria looked ashamed.

Not guilty.

Ashamed.

There was a difference.

Maya slowly stepped away from Amara.

She looked at Richard.

“Are you still my dad?””

The question stopped him.

All the anger disappeared.

All the betrayal.

All the secrets.

There was only his daughter.

Richard immediately knelt.

“Yes.””

Maya searched his face.

“Even after seeing that video?””

Richard’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“But what if you were bad before?””

The question destroyed him.

Because children didn’t care about complicated explanations.

They wanted safety.

They wanted truth.

Richard gently held her hands.

“Then I’ll spend the rest of my life proving I’m not that person anymore.””

Maya stared.

Then slowly nodded.

Amara watched them.

A small tear rolled down her cheek.

But before anyone could say anything, Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He checked the message.

His face changed.

Richard noticed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

Daniel turned the phone around.

On the screen was a news alert.

A breaking story had just appeared online.

*STERLING FAMILY SCANDAL: NEW EVIDENCE REVEALS BILLIONAIRE HID SECRET CHILD*

Richard’s expression darkened.

“How did they get that?””

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

Because outside the restaurant windows, cameras were flashing.

Reporters were already gathering.

But that wasn’t what frightened Daniel.

It was the message beneath the headline.

A message from an unknown number.

*You found Maya. Now find the person who tried to erase her.*

Richard looked at Amara.

Then Victoria.

Then the phone.

“Who sent this?””

Daniel slowly answered.

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“But I think your father left one more secret behind.””

Richard stared.

“My father is dead.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at the frozen video on the screen.

“But someone who worked for him is still alive.””

The restaurant doors suddenly opened.

A man in a black coat walked inside.

He looked directly at Richard.

And said:

“Mr. Sterling…”

Everyone turned.

“I was your father’s final employee.””

May you like

He held out an envelope.

“And I know what really happened the night Amara disappeared.””
