Chapter 7: The Daughter of the Man Who Ruined Everything

Richard Sterling forgot how to breathe.

The phone remained pressed against his ear, but the restaurant around him disappeared.

The voices.

The cameras.

The whispers.

Everything faded.

There was only one sentence echoing through his mind.

*Victoria was never my partner. She was my daughter.*

His eyes slowly moved toward Victoria.

She stood completely still.

And for the first time in twenty years, Richard saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Not the fear of being exposed.

Something deeper.

The fear of a truth finally arriving.

“Who is this?”” Richard demanded.

The voice on the phone remained quiet.

“You know who I am.””

Richard’s hand tightened.

“No.””

A weak laugh came through the speaker.

“You always hated accepting things that didn’t fit the story you created.””

Richard’s heart pounded.

Because he knew that voice.

He knew the rhythm.

The cold patience.

The way every sentence sounded like a lesson.

“James?””

The restaurant went silent.

Amara’s face changed.

Marcus stepped backward.

Maya looked up at Richard.

Victoria closed her eyes.

The voice answered.

“Yes, son.””

Richard almost dropped the phone.

“That’s impossible.””

James Sterling had been dead for fifteen years.

A funeral had been held.

A grave existed.

Richard had watched the coffin disappear into the ground.

“You’re dead.””

James laughed softly.

“Death is easy when people believe the wrong story.””

Richard looked at Marcus.

The older man looked horrified.

“You knew?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

James continued.

“Marcus always was too loyal to the wrong people.””

Richard ignored the voice.

“How are you alive?””

A pause.

“Because I planned better than everyone else.””

Richard felt disgust rise in his chest.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“Before we talk about me, we need to talk about Victoria.””

Richard looked at her.

She was crying silently now.

Not because she was caught.

Because her entire life had collapsed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” Richard asked her.

Victoria looked at him.

Her voice was almost gone.

“Because he told me you would hate me.””

Richard stared.

“Who?””

She looked toward the phone.

“My father.””

The words felt unreal.

Richard shook his head slowly.

“All these years…”

Victoria nodded.

“All these years.””

Amara stepped closer.

“You knew who he was.””

Victoria looked at her.

“Yes.””

“And you still helped him.””

Victoria’s eyes closed.

“I was a child.””

Amara’s expression hardened.

“You were forty-two.””

Victoria looked at her.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“I was a child when he made me believe that love was something you earned by obeying.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked at Victoria carefully.

For a moment, he saw something different.

Not an excuse.

A damaged person.

But the damage did not erase what she had done.

“What did he make you do?””

Victoria looked down.

“I was supposed to separate you from Amara.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“And you did.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because he promised me that if you became successful, I would have a place beside you.””

Richard stared.

“A place?””

She nodded.

“He told me I was the only person who truly understood you.””

Amara looked away.

Richard felt sick.

His father had manipulated everyone.

Amara.

Victoria.

Him.

But the choices they made were still theirs.

James’ voice interrupted.

“Richard.””

Everyone froze.

“You’re wasting time.””

Richard lifted the phone.

“You don’t get to speak to me like you’re still in control.””

A quiet laugh.

“There’s the son I remember.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

James replied calmly.

“You destroyed it when you believed you could become powerful without accepting what power costs.””

Richard felt anger burn.

“You’re blaming me?””

“I’m teaching you.””

“I’m not your student anymore.””

A pause.

Then James said:

“Good.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“I was waiting for you to finally say that.””

The words were unexpected.

James continued.

“Because now you’re ready to hear the truth.””

Richard looked at Amara.

Then Maya.

“What truth?””

“The reason I hid Maya wasn’t because of Amara.””

Richard froze.

“Then why?””

“Because Maya was never supposed to survive.””

The air vanished from the room.

Amara grabbed Maya immediately.

Richard’s voice became dangerous.

“What did you say?””

James remained calm.

“You heard me.””

Richard looked at Victoria.

Her face had gone pale.

“You knew.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Richard stared.

“You knew.””

“No!””

Her voice broke.

“I knew he wanted her gone. I didn’t know he planned that.””

Amara held Maya tighter.

“You knew enough.””

Victoria looked destroyed.

“I was trying to stop him.””

Richard turned.

“By doing what?””

Victoria had no answer.

That was the worst answer.

Richard looked back at the phone.

“Where are you?””

James laughed.

“Still asking questions like you think you’re in control.””

“Where?””

“Come find me.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because I have something that belongs to you.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The original birth records.””

Richard felt his chest tighten.

“Why would I need those?””

James answered:

“Because Maya Sterling isn’t your only child.””

Nobody moved.

The sentence was impossible.

Amara looked confused.

Richard looked at her.

“Maya isn’t…”

James continued.

“There was another child.””

Amara’s face went white.

Richard noticed.

“You knew?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

But her reaction wasn’t convincing.

Richard stared.

“Amara.””

She looked at Maya.

Then at him.

“I…”

Her voice failed.

James spoke again.

“Ask her about the night Maya was born.””

Richard’s heart raced.

The phone call ended.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Richard looked at Amara.

“What was he talking about?””

Amara looked like she had been fighting this moment for years.

“I didn’t want you to know this way.””

Richard felt the same pain he had felt all night.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

“Know what?””

Amara’s eyes filled.

“Maya wasn’t born alone.””

Richard stared.

“What?””

“There was another baby.””

Maya looked confused.

“Another baby?””

Amara nodded slowly.

“A twin.””

The word hit harder than anything before.

Richard stepped back.

A twin.

A child he never knew existed.

Another life stolen from him.

“Where is she?””

Amara looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Richard’s voice shook.

“You don’t know?””

“I thought…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Amara wiped her tears.

“I thought she was dead.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked at Maya.

Then Amara.

Then Victoria.

His entire life had become a maze of secrets.

“Who knew?””

Amara whispered:

“Your father.””

Richard felt cold.

“James knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he hid it.””

Amara nodded.

Richard turned toward Marcus.

“Did you know?””

Marcus looked devastated.

“No.””

Then he noticed something on the table.

The envelope.

A small paper had slipped out.

Marcus picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

Richard looked.

Marcus handed it to him.

It was an old hospital document.

At the top was a date.

June 14, 2006.

Below it were two names.

*Maya Sterling.*

And:

*Lily Sterling.*

Richard stared.

Then he saw the final line.

*Status: Transferred under parental authorization.*

His hands began shaking.

“Transferred?””

Marcus looked at him.

“That means someone signed her away.””

Richard looked at Victoria.

She shook her head.

“No.””

Amara stepped closer.

“Richard…”

But he was no longer listening.

Because beneath the signature line was a name.

A name that made his blood run cold.

The person who signed away his second child.

May you like

Was:

*Richard Sterling.*
