Chapter 9: The Woman Who Stole a Daughter
Richard Sterling stared at the photograph.
The woman standing beside James Sterling looked older, but there was no mistaking her.
Evelyn Grant.
Victoria’s mother.
The woman who had attended Richard and Victoria’s wedding.
The woman who had hugged him and called him “the son she never had.””
The woman who had sat at his dinner table for twenty years.
The woman who had looked into his eyes while knowing his daughter was missing.
Richard felt something inside him break.
Not anger.
Not even betrayal.
Something deeper.
The exhaustion of discovering that every person he trusted had been carrying a secret.
“How?””
His voice was barely audible.
Amara stepped closer.
“Richard?””
He handed her the photograph.
She looked down.
Her face changed instantly.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“You know her?””
Amara’s lips parted.
“I’ve seen her before.””
The room went still.
“Where?””
Amara looked at the photograph again.
“After I left.””
Richard’s heart started racing.
“Tell me.””
Amara took a slow breath.
“The first year after I disappeared, I moved constantly. I didn’t know who was following me. I didn’t know who I could trust.””
She looked at Maya.
“I was scared.””
Richard nodded.
“Then what happened?””
“One night, someone found me.””
Richard’s hands tightened.
“Who?””
Amara looked at the picture.
“Evelyn.””
The name echoed through the room.
“She found me at a motel outside the city.””
Richard frowned.
“Why?””
Amara’s eyes filled with anger.
“I thought she came to help.””
A painful silence followed.
“She told me James had gone too far. She told me she wanted to protect me and my baby.””
Richard looked at the photograph.
“But?””
Amara swallowed.
“But she knew where I was.””
Marcus slowly stepped forward.
“Because James told her.””
Richard looked at him.
“You knew?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. But now it makes sense.””
Richard looked confused.
“What does?””
Marcus pointed to the photograph.
“James didn’t trust many people. But he trusted Evelyn.””
Richard stared.
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because they were working together long before Victoria entered your life.””
Richard felt a chill.
“Explain.””
Marcus looked down.
“Your father didn’t choose Victoria randomly.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“What do you mean?””
“James wanted someone close to you.””
The answer was painful.
“Someone he could control.””
Marcus nodded.
“Victoria was young. Ambitious. And she wanted your approval.””
Richard looked away.
“So he used her.””
“Yes.””
“And Evelyn?””
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“She helped him.””
Richard looked at the photograph again.
The woman who had smiled at him.
The woman who had held his daughter’s fate in her hands.
“She knows where Lily is.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard turned.
“We find her.””
Amara grabbed his arm.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“After everything…”
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Be careful.””
The concern in her voice stopped him.
Not because she doubted him.
Because she had spent twenty years surviving people like this.
Richard nodded.
“I won’t lose another child.””
An hour later, they arrived at Evelyn Grant’s mansion.
The house sat at the edge of the city, surrounded by tall gates and perfectly maintained gardens.
It looked peaceful.
Almost too peaceful.
Richard stepped out of the vehicle.
Maya stayed with Amara inside.
Marcus walked beside him.
“You should know something.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
“Evelyn is not like James.””
Richard frowned.
“Meaning?””
“James wanted control.””
Marcus looked at the house.
“Evelyn wants forgiveness.””
Richard stopped.
“Forgiveness?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make her innocent.””
Marcus nodded.
“No.””
They reached the front door.
Richard knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
Finally, the door opened.
An elderly woman stood there.
Elegant.
Calm.
Perfectly dressed.
Evelyn Grant looked at Richard.
And immediately knew why he was there.
Her face lost color.
“Richard.””
He stared.
“You know why I’m here.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I was hoping this day would never come.””
Richard stepped inside.
“You knew.””
No greeting.
No kindness.
Just the truth.
Evelyn looked exhausted.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked him.
“You admit it?””
She slowly sat down.
“I’m too old to lie anymore.””
Richard remained standing.
“Where is Lily?””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
For a moment, she looked like someone carrying a lifetime of regret.
“She’s alive.””
Richard’s breath caught.
“Where?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“She doesn’t know she’s Lily Sterling.””
The sentence destroyed him.
Richard closed his eyes.
Twenty years.
Another child living without knowing who she was.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Because James believed identity was a weapon.””
Richard’s voice became cold.
“My daughter was a weapon?””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your daughter was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That James Sterling wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””
Richard stared.
Evelyn continued.
“James knew if Maya and Lily existed, his control over you would end.””
Richard clenched his jaw.
“So he took one.””
“And hid the other.””
Richard looked confused.
“What?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“James didn’t know where Maya was after Amara escaped.””
Richard froze.
“He lost her?””
Evelyn nodded.
“That’s why he became desperate.””
Amara’s voice came from behind him.
“You knew I escaped.””
Everyone turned.
Amara stood in the doorway.
Richard hadn’t heard her enter.
Evelyn looked at her.
“I did.””
Amara’s face hardened.
“You knew I was alive for twenty years.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
Evelyn looked away.
“I was afraid.””
Amara laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid.””
Richard looked between them.
“Enough.””
His voice stopped them.
“I need answers.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Ask.””
Richard stared.
“Where is Lily?””
Evelyn reached for a small notebook on the table.
Her hands shook.
“She lives in Chicago.””
Richard froze.
“Chicago?””
“Yes.””
“What is her name?””
Evelyn hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Lily doesn’t know that name.””
Richard felt his chest tighten.
“What name does she use?””
Evelyn opened the notebook.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman.
Around twenty years old.
Smiling.
Richard stared.
Because even though he had never met her…
He recognized her.
The eyes.
The smile.
The same expression Maya had when she was happy.
His daughter.
Alive.
Evelyn whispered:
“Her name is Olivia Carter.””
Richard touched the photograph.
A tear fell before he could stop it.
Twenty years.
Twenty years searching for a child he never knew he lost.
Then Evelyn said something that changed the moment.
“Richard…”
He looked up.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
Evelyn looked toward Amara.
“She doesn’t know she was taken.””
Richard frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She believes she was abandoned.””
The words hurt.
Richard stared.
“Who told her that?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Your father.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“He raised her?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Someone else did.””
“Who?””
Evelyn’s face became filled with fear.
“The person James trusted after everyone else failed.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Who?””
Evelyn whispered:
“The person who has been protecting Lily for twenty years.””
Richard waited.
Then Evelyn said the name.
A name that made Amara suddenly cover her mouth.
Because she knew it.
“No…”
Richard turned.
“What?””
Amara looked terrified.
“That’s impossible.””
“Who?””
She looked at him.
Her voice shaking.
“The person who raised Lily…”
May you like
A pause.
“…is my father.””
