Chapter 7: The Evidence Everyone Wanted to Destroy

I read the message three times.

*Your mother found the missing evidence. Vanessa knows where it is.*

The words should have been confusing.

They should have made me ask a hundred questions.

Instead, they made one thing painfully clear.

Everyone was searching for something.

Something powerful enough to ruin lives.

Something important enough that people had spent years lying to protect it.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Vanessa was still staring at me.

Not at my face.

At the screen.

Like she already knew what the message said.

“Who sent that?””

Her voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

I slipped my phone into my pocket.

“Why do you care?””

She looked away.

“Maya, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I’m done listening to people who tell me they’re protecting me while they destroy my life.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked genuinely hurt.

But I couldn’t tell if it was because she regretted what she had done or because she was losing control.

She sat back down on the bench.

The confident woman from graduation was gone.

The woman in front of me looked exhausted.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“Maybe you should.””

That surprised me.

Because Vanessa admitting fault felt impossible.

“I made choices.””

She looked at the ground.

“Bad choices.””

I watched her carefully.

“Why?””

She looked up.

“What?””

“Why did you do it?””

Her eyes moved toward the old playground nearby.

Children were laughing.

Parents were watching.

A normal afternoon.

A normal life.

“You think I wanted to become this person?””

I almost answered yes.

But I didn’t.

Because the truth was, I didn’t know anymore.

“I grew up watching people like your mother.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“People who were loved.””

The bitterness in her voice was impossible to miss.

“My whole life, I watched other people get chosen.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother had Daniel’s loyalty. She had your love. She had a family.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

She nodded.

“It doesn’t.””

A pause.

“But it explains where it started.””

I crossed my arms.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“With jealousy.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I was jealous of your mother.””

My stomach tightened.

“At least you’re admitting it.””

She gave a sad smile.

“I’m admitting it now.””

She looked down.

“Not then.””

The wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked:

“What happened to Thomas?””

Her face changed immediately.

The question hit harder than I expected.

“You know about him.””

“Marcus told me.””

Her expression darkened.

“Of course he did.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I loved Thomas.””

I didn’t expect that answer.

“But?””

Her fingers tightened.

“But Thomas wasn’t the person everyone thought he was.””

I remembered Marcus’s words.

Charming.

Intelligent.

Dangerous.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa took a long breath.

“He used people.””

She looked at me.

“Just like everyone else in this story.””

I hated that she included herself.

Because she was right.

Everyone had used someone.

My mother protected me.

My father protected his image.

Vanessa protected her place.

But I was the one who paid for all of it.

“Did Thomas have anything to do with my father’s company?””

Vanessa went silent.

That was enough.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

She looked nervous.

“Thomas introduced Daniel to people who promised easy money.””

“The missing money.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I thought about the documents Marcus showed me.

The transfers.

The signatures.

“So Thomas was involved?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

Her eyes met mine.

“I knew.””

The answer hurt.

Because even after everything, some part of me still wanted to find a reason to believe she wasn’t as bad as I thought.

But there it was.

“I knew what Thomas was doing.””

She looked ashamed.

“And I said nothing.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed softly.

“Everyone is afraid.””

She flinched.

I regretted saying it.

But only slightly.

“What happened after?””

Vanessa looked toward the street.

“Thomas disappeared.””

“Did you have something to do with that?””

Her face tightened.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

But then she added:

“I had something to do with hiding what happened.””

My breath caught.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, headlights appeared across the street.

A black SUV slowed down.

Vanessa immediately stood.

Her entire body changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“Leave.””

I looked at the car.

“What?””

“Leave now.””

“Who is that?””

She grabbed my arm.

The first time she had touched me with panic instead of control.

“Maya, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“This is why I sent you to Marcus.””

I froze.

“You did?””

She nodded.

“I knew he still had copies.””

“Copies of what?””

Her eyes moved toward the SUV.

“The evidence.””

The SUV stopped.

A door opened.

My heart started racing.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Someone who cannot let you find the truth.””

A man stepped out.

I couldn’t see his face clearly.

But Vanessa reacted like she had seen a ghost.

Then my phone rang.

Mom.

I answered immediately.

“Maya?””

My mother’s voice was shaking.

“Where are you?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“At the park.””

Silence.

Then:

“Angela: Get away from Vanessa.””

I looked at her.

“She’s here.””

My mother stopped breathing.

“What?””

“She knows about the evidence.””

A pause.

Then my mother said:

“Maya, listen carefully. Vanessa isn’t the only person you need to be afraid of.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

My mother whispered:

“Daniel.””

I looked toward the SUV.

The man walking toward us was getting closer.

“Mom, what are you saying?””

Her voice broke.

“I found out something after I left.””

“What?””

“The reason Vanessa could control your father…”

The man stepped closer.

I could finally see his face.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew him.

Not personally.

But from the old family photos.

From pictures my father kept hidden.

The man walking toward us was older now.

But there was no mistaking him.

Thomas Vale.

The man everyone said disappeared.

My mother’s voice came through the phone.

“Maya…”

I couldn’t speak.

“Your father didn’t know Thomas was alive.””

My hand went cold around the phone.

“What?””

The man stopped a few feet away.

Vanessa looked at him.

Not with surprise.

With fear.

My mother whispered:

“He’s the one who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””

Thomas smiled.

A calm, confident smile.

The same kind of smile Vanessa used to wear.

Then he looked directly at me.

And said:

“Thomas: You look exactly like your mother.””

I couldn’t move.

Because the man who was supposed to be gone for years was standing in front of me.

And he wasn’t looking at Vanessa.

He wasn’t looking at Daniel.

May you like

He was looking at me.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.
